Codex can now use Chrome on your computer to complete work inside the websites and apps where you’re already signed in.
OVERVIEW
Codex for Chrome lets Codex help with work that happens inside the websites and apps where you are already signed in.
Use it when a task depends on browser context, account state, or websites. Codex can help you with research, update records, review dashboards, fill forms, and move through multi-step workflows across logged-in tools like CRMs & internal apps, as well as external websites.
Codex works in task-specific tab groups, so it can gather context and take actions without taking over your active browsing session. It will help ask you to take over when needed, and keeps useful pages for review when it's finished.
You stay in control. Codex always asks before sensitive actions. It will ask before accessing sites in Chrome, referencing your browser history, and downloading/uploading files.

- Useful idea, but unreliable on Windows. The extension connects and can sometimes handle simple pages like example.com, but it repeatedly fails on real logged-in browser tasks with this error: “Chrome is blocking automation because another extension UI is open.” There is no visible extension popup, side panel, permission dialog, or extension tab open. The Codex extension shows as installed/enabled, and the native messaging host/registry checks can pass, but Codex still loses the ability to inspect or control the page. This looks like a broken or stale Windows native messaging / Chrome bridge state. Reinstalling the extension does not reliably fix it. Restarting Chrome/Codex and killing stale extension-host.exe / Chrome processes sometimes helps, but the extension is not dependable enough for authenticated browser workflows. Good concept, but the Windows implementation needs much better runtime recovery and clearer error reporting. Right now it can say a popup is blocking automation when no popup is visible, which makes the failure impossible to resolve from the UI.

- BEST THING EVER!! Codex does everything GPT can't. Codex is logical, direct, it's like talking to Data, but without the sci-fi. No mansplaining, no preamble, no unsolicited content and it only summarizes when asked. Everything you hate about ChatGPT & Gemini has been removed. The only con I can find is that, at the time of this review, I can't right click on a misspelled word and get it to correct it. So you get that red swiggle under a word indicating that it is spelling wrong and right clicking only tells you it's spelled wrong. But Who Cares! Codex is logical. And you don't have to use the Chrome extension, just download the program to your laptop. ChatGPT was built for baseline (basic) people - Codex is for us neuro spicy folks! PS works great with Windows and Android.

- Codex Chrome extension installs successfully, but browser automation is currently unreliable on macOS. Even after reinstalling Codex, Chrome, and the plugin, Codex cannot discover the Chrome backend, while node_repl fails with a sandboxPolicy metadata error. Promising tool, but the extension/native host bridge needs urgent attention.

- I am getting this error when I am trying to let Codex use my chrome browser. "windows sandbox failed: runner error: CreateProcessAsUserW failed: 5" I am using Codex Version 26.616.30709 • Released Jun 18, 2026 Here is how to resolve the error so Codex can launch Chrome: 1. Open: C:\Users\<your Windows username>\.codex\config.toml 2. Add or change this: [windows] sandbox = "unelevated" 3. Restart Codex. You are welcome!

- I'm running Codex on Windows and it's unable to run or control Chrome. When Codex tries to open or interact with Chrome, it fails — the browser either won't launch through Codex, or Codex can't connect to / control the Chrome instance. I've already tried reconnecting and troubleshooting the Chrome plugin/extension access multiple times, but the problem persists. This is blocking me from using any of the browser-based features and plugins. Could you please look into Chrome support on Windows? Specifically: Codex cannot launch Chrome Codex cannot connect to or control an already-open Chrome window Reconnecting Chrome extension access does not fix it Let me know if there are any logs, settings, or steps you need from me to debug this. Thanks.

- Support more all Chromium based browsers Since the abilities/tools are straightforward ones like view, navigate, enter, all mechanisms should be very similar. Maybe allow config or ask everytime (like Android/Windows ask which app to open a file with, with an option to default in the config.toml under the chrome revamped Chromium plugin).

- Unreliable Chrome automation bridge makes the plugin unusable for serious QA I needed this plugin to inspect an already logged-in Chrome session for staging-site QA. Chrome was running, the correct profile opened, the Codex Chrome Extension was installed and enabled, and the native host manifest checked out correctly. Other Codex chats were able to use the same Chrome profile and plugin at the same time. But in this thread, the plugin’s JavaScript/browser bridge crashed before it could do anything useful. Even a minimal bridge test failed before any browser automation code ran, with windows sandbox failed: spawn setup refresh. The plugin could open a blank Chrome window in the right profile, but it could not list existing tabs, claim the logged-in tab, inspect the page, or take screenshots. That makes it unreliable for authenticated QA. Worse, the diagnostics make the extension/profile look healthy while the actual control bridge is broken, leaving the user with no practical recovery path. For a QA workflow, that is a hard failure. This plugin needs better per-thread bridge health checks, clearer failure reporting, a real restart/recovery mechanism, and stronger isolation so one thread does not fail while others work. Until then, I cannot trust it for production or staging QA tasks that require visual confirmation in Chrome.

- In the past 3 days, this assistant helped me accomplish things I did not have the technical capabilities to do yet. If I could give Codex 10 stars, I would. Codex helped me troubleshoot a controller issue, restore wireless Steam functionality, remove a bad hybrid control setup, and build a polished luxury website preview from scratch. It generated tasteful custom visuals, ran the site locally, checked desktop/mobile layout, and made live copy edits while I reviewed it. Straightforward, fast, and actually useful. This will be my sidekick going forward. Seriously, check it out, YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT. You'll wish you found it sooner.

- Generally extremely strong and works very well. Occasionally it needs to get uninstalled and then reinstalled to work which is a minor inconvenience given the usefulness of this.

- The Codex Chrome Extension is installed and enabled, and the native host manifest appears to be correctly configured, but the Chrome integration in the Windows Codex app fails with the following error: “privileged native pipe bridge is not available; browser-client is not trusted.” Because of this, Codex cannot control my logged-in Chrome session, including my Gmail session. I have confirmed that Chrome is running and the extension is enabled, but the trusted connection between Codex and the extension does not work. This seems to match a known issue reported on the official OpenAI Codex GitHub repository. I would appreciate a fix or an official workaround for Windows users.

- Doesn't work. Can't connect to the Codex VSCode app or the Codex Mac app. Just keeps saying disconnected with no way to troubleshoot, just gives me the option to re-install. Claude works out of the box for the same thing once I sign into my account. Might be because I run the Chrome Dev channel and Codex might be hard coded for Chrome Stable perhaps, but either way, can't currently use this which is a shame.

- It seems most users feel unsatisfied with this extension and mostly because they cannot connect However I have connected successfully so maybe you can try checking your network settings? I haven't really used it yet so I will give it 3 stars for now
