Auto-close idle tabs, save every link, and judge your tab habits
TabBye – Auto Tab Timeout is a clever and user-friendly browser extension designed to help you manage and declutter your browsing experience by automatically closing tabs that remain idle for a specified period. It acts as a smart tab organizer, preventing the browser from being overwhelmed by forgotten or unused tabs while preserving your browsing history in a fully searchable "Graveyard." This extension delivers an engaging blend of functionality and playful insights, providing users with detailed statistics, customizable options, and motivational feedback to develop healthier, more productive tab management habits—all while maintaining complete privacy by operating 100% offline and collecting no personal data.
With TabBye, you enjoy an automated yet friendly assistant that quietly monitors your open tabs in the background. You can set a timer ranging from 5 to 120 minutes, after which any tabs that have gone untouched will automatically close to free up system memory and maintain browser speed. Before any tab is closed, you receive a warning five minutes in advance, allowing you to snooze the closure with a single click. This easy-to-use control keeps you informed and in charge of your browsing environment, eliminating clutter without sudden disruptions.
Tabs that are closed do not vanish into thin air; instead, they are stored in the "Graveyard," a robust offline repository where every closed tab is saved for easy retrieval. You can search, filter, or restore individual tabs and even entire groups when multiple tabs from the same domain close simultaneously. The Graveyard stores up to 500 entries, organized by date and site, so you never lose important links or context. This feature guarantees peace of mind, letting you clean your workspace confidently.
TabBye goes beyond simple tab closing by offering rich analytics and engaging summaries of your browsing patterns. The extension tracks how many tabs you’ve closed over time, estimates the RAM saved by reducing open tabs, and monitors your streaks of efficient tab management. A weekly "wrapped" style report highlights your seven-day activity, favorite sites, and overall progress. Additionally, the playful "Tab Shaming System" rates your tab habits across seven levels, from "Tab Enlightened" to "Tab Goblin," giving humorous or motivational "roasts" (which can be toggled off if preferred) to encourage better habits with a lighthearted touch.
The extension also includes a "Focus Mode" that allows you to set a maximum number of open tabs, gently reminding you when you exceed this limit to help maintain concentration without forcibly locking your browser. You can whitelist specific websites—like Gmail, Notion, Figma, or localhost—ensuring those tabs remain untouched regardless of their idle time. This customization means critical tasks stay accessible while TabBye trims the rest.
If you ever need a break or want to pause the automatic tab closing, a simple "Pause" button allows immediate suspension of the auto-close functions without changing settings permanently. Resuming is just as effortless. TabBye is built with a sleek, modern interface featuring live statistics, color-coded status badges, and smooth transitions that make managing your tabs both effective and enjoyable.
