Legally read news and research papers for free, on any device.
Spaywall News & Research is the original browser extension that helps you LEGALLY avoid paywalls by searching online archives and redirecting you to a paywall-free version. By pointing your browser to a different website, we are not bypassing or interfering with the paywall on the original article source in any way.
Researchers can also use Spaywall to download free versions of Open Access research papers and articles. Click to search our database of millions of legal, free, full-text scholarly articles and we'll redirect you to the PDF instantly. These Open Access articles are research papers that have been posted with the full permission of the authors and publishers involved. Save time avoiding paywalls and logins, great for students and academics!
Please Note:
✓ Spaywall can be used for 100% FREE, though the Free plan has limitations.
✓ Upgrading gives News junkies additional archive sources for even better news coverage.
✓ Upgrading also gives 24/7 All-Hours Access instead of limited to off-peak hours.
✓ Our algorithm strives to find an archived article that is paywall-free. It's pretty good, but it can never work on all articles.
✓ Because we are searching online archives for a paywall-free copy, an archived copy must already exist. That means articles may need to be a few days old for them to have been crawled by the archivers (though we have seen same-day news work many times!)
✓ If you frequent a particular news outlet, please consider directly supporting the journalism you love.

- (2024-05-09) Dan Menkin: This site is such a Blessing!!! It works perfectly and let's me read so many sources that otherwise block me -- most wonderful! I use Google News and click stories i want to read, but so many of them then block the content, so now i just click the Spaywall icon and it opens a site where i can read the full article. THANK YOU! friends at Spaywall for making this service freely available to those of us who cannot afford subscriptions to all the magazines and papers we like to read.
- (2023-12-25) Luminosity Deville: EDIT: Now I have to pay for every site because I'm not a "premium user." BOO. Used to be "read this article" and now there's nothing but search news or search academia. When you put that link into the search, you will be informed that you're not a premium user. Oh well. And after asking me to change my review. hmmmm [EDIT: After timely and pleasant communication with the Spaywall team, I have had no problem accessing the paywalled sites that I've tried to access since then. So thanks for beeping me!] [This extension didn't work on any of the news sites or other paywalls that I attempted. I really wanted this to work but it doesn't. If y'all fix it, beep me.]
- (2023-11-02) Andrew james: Doesn't work. couldn't use it. Can't find the article referred to
- (2023-11-02) cv 56: it works thank you very much !
- (2023-10-30) 肯尼晋三: That's great!
- (2023-10-26) Silver Hakusho: It works for the sites I needed
- (2023-10-05) Fluffy Wolverine: Sadly, it didn't work completely. It unlocked part of an article, but the majority was still blocked.
- (2023-09-19) Jasper: Works!
- (2023-09-17) Angel Hernandez: Worked on the New York Times article I needed for school, even removed the ads from the page!
- (2023-09-02) Malcolm McLean: Spaywall has "worked" for the majority of the news articles I have used it on - meaning that it gave me access through either one of two methods. Sometimes it fails with the article I want to read, because the article has not yet been indexed, or is not yet in google's cache. But if I go back later I'm more likely than not to find I can now read it.
- (2023-08-08) Shan Xiao: Total scam, tried 10 sites, none work.
- (2023-08-05) Dandelion: About as much use as a chocolate fireguard.
- (2023-07-28) Paul Bennett: Does not work. "This content requires a subscription!"
- (2023-07-10) Björn van Veen: Does not work.
- (2023-06-18) Tugboat Peavy: working great, and much easier than copypasta into internet archive.
- (2023-06-03) J J: Doesn't work with the WSJ for current articles or ones from days past.
- (2023-05-02) Veronica Ortiz: Works!
- (2023-04-06) Dante Powell: worked like a charm so far.
- (2023-03-22) Rolls Yoshi: How to work well ? anybody work in Bloomberg sites ? Tell me anybody. thank you
- (2023-02-13) Cindy Bahl (Cindy): Finally found an extension that works! Love it!
- (2022-12-27) Ren Rund: It works to get through news site paywalls, which is a lifesaver, but doesn't let me interact with some pages past reading them - overall a very useful extension with only minor limitations
- (2022-12-01) Josephine thecatman: Truly a life saver for university, I cant afford to read all the article I need for my papers or classes. TYSM.
- (2022-11-18) MWO CPW: This extension does NOT work as the user would expect it to. It will work on some level if the article is older or if the ext can find the article elsewhere on the internet. Great idea, way to think outside the box. However that is not what the expectation is. That is the source of all the poor reviews. I get it, it does work in a sort of work around kind of way, but users don't want sort of a work around where they read old articles later in the day or some such thing. Users need basically a paywall work around (basically a unbreakable legal hack). With that ugly stuff said, it is a great effort and a terrific attempt at what most think of as an impossible task and I thank the dev's for putting it out there and letting us try it for free. Thank you.
- (2022-11-04) Trent S: Just downloaded this, I appreciate the developer of this extension explaining to people who left low reviews why this would not work on some websites, thank you
- (2022-10-27) Vedika Mithal: doesn't work :/
- (2022-10-04) Johahn T.: This paywall 'redirector' works perfectly as expected. The technique of searching and redirecting users from the original article (with a paywall) to the archive of all articles ever posted (without a paywall) for the exact same article is ingenious and actually really smart. Bypassing the paywall to deliver the same exact content without breaking terms of service. Smart. To new users reading older, negative reviews, obviously it won't work for articles posted an hour beforehand, but I've had no problem with articles uploaded say in the morning and reading them at night.
- (2022-07-31) ϻя.ƹ: Sorry for the bad rating, but does NOT work with Artnet News, the only site I ever really visit that has the annoying paywall bologna, maybe you guys, gals, or non-binary pals can work on it, as I'd much rather give a 5 star rating for all your hard work. Much love!!! ✌ .ƹ.
- (2022-07-28) Zhixiao Liu: simply just works
- (2022-07-20) Boomer: SIMPLY DOESN'T WORK.
- (2022-07-07) S.N.F.N LuckyFetus: Works great. Thank you kindly for helping keep info free, 😎)/ bravo dev/s
- (2022-05-09) Brent Szklaruk: Excellent! Bypass New York Times paywall!! Thank you!
- (2022-04-24) Eddy Etter: Completely worthless. Does nothing but take up space on my phone.
- (2022-04-23) HJK: It works beautifully! Thanks Dev.
- (2022-01-28) M H: Ich benutze diese Erweiterung um von meiner Tageszeitung die Paywall zu umgehen, funktioniert super geil, ich bin begeistert, jede andere hat nichts gebracht ! Eff u Main Post Paywall :D
- (2021-11-17) Sam Durk: Fantastic app! Worked a treat
- (2021-09-20) Roni Gomes: Works like a charm! thank you guys.
- (2021-09-05) Natalie Lin: takes me to another site that still has a paywall... takes me here http://web.archive.org/web/20191011123144/https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ft.com%2Fcontent%2F0bc15800-043d-11e3-a8d6-00144feab7de
- (2021-08-25) Mikey: doesn't work on reuters. S A D
- (2021-08-18) Rianna Chavez: I love it! Use it for school because I am not gonna pay to read the paper. Really works 10/10 recommend!
- (2021-06-09) Jaime Souza: This extension is amazing because it lets you read content from all over the world, not only of US and Europe newspapers. This is simply the best, the developer(s) deserve a lot of love and money! xD
- (2021-04-07) Chris Lorensson: Works amazing!
- (2021-02-07) Roy Wilkie: 100% completely useless, for me. It works in a very passive way - they amass news articles and serve you the cached copies. Unfortunately this means you can only read articles which have been out for at least a few weeks! Who only reads the news from a few weeks ago? Also, why would anyone design an extension that works this way? It's a bad idea and completely useless to 99% what most people are looking for. (Hot tip: right-click on the page's background, change 'display: flex' to 'display: none', then delete 'overflow:hidden' from the <body> tag. That will show the article, works on almost all paywalls.)
- (2020-12-26) Kirsten Holmes: It actually works. Yay!
- (2020-10-31) Sage S: Worked great on the Nat. Geo. article i needed for class
- (2020-10-29) J. Erik Martin: This is nice for anyone who does research or like to ready a lot of news. It was helpful to me to get past a few paywalls. Worth the extension, I hope Nerdy Labs keeps making great products like this.
- (2020-08-26) Michelle Wigton: Love love love being able to read articles without being stopped by paywalls. I've recently completed some local real estate research and was able to pull up relevant articles across several newspaper sites....for free. The only downside is the articles have to be old enough to be archived, but for me that's worth avoiding paying for several subscriptions. Thanks for putting this together!
