  • (2020-10-08) Muhammad Zeeshan khan: Excellent extension, the only option I think it lacks is being able to set which sci-hub proxy to search papers. Sometimes .tw is down, which limits the utility of this extension
  • (2020-10-02) Sorin PASCANU: Works great but needs option to switch Sci-hub proxy. (.tw doesn't work right now)
  • (2020-09-28) Oliver Hartley: Great extension and really needed when doing long research hours. However, the default sci-hub proxy (sci-hub.tw) seems to be down currently, but sci-hub.se is working. Is there a way to switch from the one to the other to expand the extensions usability? Maybe a consideration for future updates?

Ты моя героиня!! I would like to try to help you, to help me, and to help everyone else. I suggest that we mobilise the various university student bodies in some critical universities to support the aims of Sci-Hub. They have a lot o power, as has been seen by recent actions in the UK and elsewhere by Student Unions addressing climate change, by asking that the University Administration disinvest in fossil fuel companies. This power is partly from being able to apply pressure on the University investments, which in some cases are very large, but also from media attention. After all, they have a captive body, and it is easy or them to get media attention. Plus if the cause seems reasonable, then the unviversity Academics often support it. And they have a fair amount of influence as well. My idea is to: - Draft up a straightforward and simple to understand issue that we want action on. It needs to be obvious, and to be able to be answered as a "yes/no". Perhaps several, linked questions that illustrate the overall issue - Do not link it with any specific political philosophy like communism or socialism: I see now need to do it, and a direct link risks alienating some people who would ootherwise support it. That is, make it apolitical - Initially, concentrate on a few obvious targets like Ellsevier, who can easily be shown to be the "bad guys" - Rather say "Support Open Access", instead of "Abolish Publishers" in general - However we CAN say we want to remove publishers (like Ellsivier) who are actually hurting the academic world by restricting access, and in turn, by them making very large profits from the efforts of the people who write the papers, as well as are freeloading on tax money - The GOAL of this movement for now should be to shut down Ellsevier, and that can be down in several ways: (1) Get people to stop buying Ellsevier shares: this will hurt them financially (2) Have the Student's Unions request their governments to investigate Ellsevier as a monopoly: I think that might be a VERY effective tactic in the USA. And since it would be done by US Justice, or State Dept, it would tend to shut down their lawsuit against you personally (3) Have the Student Unions pressure their University libraries to stop buying Elsevier Journals. In the short term, this would cause problems for a small number of academics, however by using SciHub, any supporters will not be hurt. It will become a sort of "passive resistance", because as long as enough people just dodge the official policy of no access to Elsevier, it will be very hard to stop it (4) Have the Student Unions pressure the University Academics who act as Editors for Elsevier to resign, and go to Open Access journals instead. This will be somewhat unpopular for the Editors, because they are losing their current power that they wield by being Editors. However the good ones will be able to transfer over (it's easy to see who acts as an Editor for the Journals, and make a global list of them) I have more ideas, but this is enough to start it going. I could approach the University of Sheffield quite easily since I live in Sheffield, and I went to university there. And discuss the idea with the new Student Union. And they have links to other Universities, like Cambridge and Oxford. It is a good time to start this campaign now, because the Northern Hemisphere universities are getting ready to start a new year, and the students are not going to be really involved in studies for a few months. What do you think? Alan Jarvis Sheffield
