The Titans compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the American Football Conference (AFC) South division. Throughout the club's history, the Titans have played in the Super Bowl once (XXXIV, at the end of the 1999 NFL season); the Titans lost 23–16 to the St. Louis Rams. Tennessee Titans have performed well in recent seasons. The 2017 Tennessee Titans season was the franchise's 48th season in the National Football League and the 58th overall. It also marked the franchise's 21st season in the state of Tennessee as well as the second full season under head coach Mike Mularkey. They equaled their record from a year ago, and not only that, with a 15–10 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 17, they clinched their first playoff berth since 2008. In the first round, the Titans rallied from a 21–3 halftime deficit against the Chiefs to win 22–21, winning their first playoff game since 2003. Marcus Mariota became the first quarterback in NFL playoff history to throw a touchdown to himself. Rookie Corey Davis caught his first career touchdowns. These would not be enough, however, as the top-seeded/defending champion Patriots steamrolled the Titans, 35-14. With the loss, the Titans' season ended, with a record of 10-8. With the Patriots losing to the Eagles three weeks later in Super Bowl LII, the Titans would have the third-longest championship drought of any team in the NFL, going back to 1961 when they were the Houston Oilers. The 2018 Tennessee Titans season was the franchise's 49th season in the National Football League and their 59th overall. It also marks the franchise's 22nd season in the state of Tennessee, their first under head coach Mike Vrabel, and the first with new uniforms and blue helmets, as they have worn white helmets since the club was based in Houston, Texas. This season marks the third straight in which the Titans have finished 9–7. The Titans failed to qualify for the postseason after losing a Week 17 win-and-in contest against their division rival Indianapolis Colts. One highlight from this season includes the Titans beating the New England Patriots for the first time since 2002, a season after the Patriots won their first Super Bowl title, also the second of three times Bill Belichick's Patriots had missed the playoffs. The 2019 season was the Tennessee Titans' 50th in the National Football League and their 60th overall. It marks the franchise's 23rd season in the state of Tennessee, their 22nd in Nashville and their second full season under head coach Mike Vrabel. Despite a 2-4 start resulting in the benching of QB Marcus Mariota, the Titans turned their season around with ex-Dolphin QB Ryan Tannehill, who transformed the offense, previously one of the worst in the league, into one of its best and led the Titans to a strong 7-3 finish, causing them to match their 9–7 record for the fourth straight year and return to the postseason after a one-year absence. In the playoffs, the Titans upset the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots in the Wild Card Round by a score of 20–13, advancing them to the Divisional Round. The win over the Patriots was the Titans' first win at Gillette Stadium, and they're first in Foxboro since 1993 when the organization was based out of Houston as the Houston Oilers. The Titans then upset the heavily favored top-seeded Baltimore Ravens 28–12 advancing to their first AFC Championship Game since 2002. They played the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship on January 19, 2020, to determine which AFC team would play in Super Bowl LIV, and attempted to make their first Super Bowl in 20 years as well as become the first team since the 2010 Green Bay Packers to win three straight playoff games on the road. However, the Titans' Cinderella run season came to an end when they lost to the eventual Super Bowl LIV champion Chiefs 35–24 at Arrowhead Stadium.
