Description from extension meta

Reduce Chrome's memory usage by setting inactive tabs to sleep or system memory is low

Image from store Memory Saver
Description from store Lightweight extension that reduces Chrome's memory usage by putting inactive tabs to sleep. Using Chrome's built in tab discarding feature, when a tab is inactive or system memory critically low, the extension discards the background tabs freeing up memory. Once you switch the focus to the sleeping tab, it gets automatically reloaded. Tabs playing audio or video won't be put to sleep. === Main Features=== Tabs are put to sleep when not in use for 10 minutes (the interval can be customized in the settings). Tabs are put to sleep when system memory is low. The extension will set a default low memory threshold depending by the total amount of system memory. This value can be customized. The extension will periodically check the amount of free system memory. This interval is set by default to 5 minutes and can be customized. ========================= CHANGE LOG ============================= v.1.5 : small bug fixes and improvements v.1.4 : Added more settings to control the following: - Enable/disable tab discarding when opening a new tab and the system memory is low - Enable/disable discarding of pinned tabs

  • (2023-09-01) Rant: I'm using windows 7 still, and i just love the old comodo dragon because of its lite use of memory even when opening many tabs in Youtube. (i've open at least 10 tabs of Youtube and less than 1GD ram usage). with this memory saver, i realized when you try opening another link to a new tab, the tab goes blank. Maybe the developer can do something about it? i know and understand its old and outdated versions i'm using if they are not willing. Seems to help a bit with the memory i would think this extension.
  • (2023-07-09) Tête à-tête: I'm used to 'freemem' for mac, which can be configured. I installed memory saver to an 8-gig dell vostro and, it needs no configuration. I immediately saved 1.1Gb and swap activity dropped, and levelled off. Excellent!
  • (2023-05-08) SenusSuns (Hydracoil): Useless extension. I had tabs I didn't want to snooze and I installed this thinking I could customize it but instead all it did was snooze all my tabs and ruined everything. DO NOT INSTALL!
  • (2023-01-07) Meghan and Tyler Meszaros: Although this app used to be necessary, Chrome now has this feature built in. Go to settings and then performance.
  • (2022-05-01) Ryan Chang: When opening a website in a new tab by clicking on a hyperlink with the middle mouse button or right click > open in new tab, an about:blank screen appears instead of the website.

  • (2022-02-11) Mark Solomon: Does what it suppose to do but buggy. Breaks open in new tab. Seems inconsistent as to which tabs to discard.
  • (2022-02-09) Kevin Pinel: Need it to leave pinned tabs alone. I think most of us pin tabs for a reason. Be nice to have a bit more configurability in it so that users can set exclusions if pinned tabs aren't going to be excluded

  • (2021-09-13) Jose Leal: Good extension, however, its taking control of opening a tab with ctrl. It opens an empty tab

  • (2022-04-17, v:1.5) John Osborne: Saving tabs vs discarding tabs
Good morning, Thank you for developing this extension. Am not sure if the app will work for my needs. But may not have fully grasp its functions. Copy which describes the app, and in settings, emphasizes "discarding" tabs. Specifically under time and low memory conditions. What about saving tabs? How can one reduce memory but also sleep or save tabs from being discarded? Many users, such as myself, invest thousands of hours, to find and keep tabs. Your app, by contrast, seems intent to blow 'em up. For example in settings, once limits have been triggered, tabs are wiped out! Is it true or have I misunderstood "discard?" It may be possible that the app was designed around discarding tabs, as oppose to sleeping or other means to save memory? Is it true? When your app was installed, it immediately shut down tabs (put them to sleep). Which is good. None were lost or discarded and memory was quickly reduced, which is also good. But tabs also, toggled on and off. The app was removed immediately. Thousands of hours have been vested in saving tabs, bookmarks and links. The app did not provide instructions, advance notice or options to set conditions. Instead, upon loading, it went into attack mode. My system includes 4 chrome instances and about 300-400 tabs. Discarding tabs or "all tabs" as indicated, would result in loss of time. Which am not willing to risk. Admittedly, did not investigate the app after it loaded. It may indeed be possible to; sleep, wake and otherwise reduce memory. If so, please reconsider description and settings; to emphasize saving, protecting and recovery. Thank-you for considering my query john

Hey, I'm not using google chrome so I can't use the chrome web store to automatically install extensions. Do you have a download so I can manually install your extension?
  • (2022-01-23, v:1.3) Stephen Lewis: makes new tabs blank
With the extension installed, whenever I use middle button to click on a link, or when ever I right-click on a link and select "open in new tab," it just opens a blank tab that says "Untitled." When I uninstalled the extension, those capabilities returned, so I'm pretty sure the extension is causing it. I installed it in Brave.
  • (2021-08-03, v:1.1) Steven (Steven): Less than 1.0 GB?
Allow a value less than 1.0 to be input into the 'Discard tabs if memory is lower than (GB)' option.
