However it can not always be activated by a click on the address bar icon as not all sites are considered reader-able by Chrome. This add-on adds a button to the toolbar. Clicking on it activates the Reader View even if the icon in the address bar is not present. The ability of the Reader View to make sites readable is not affected by this add-on, some pages might still not work. The button does not toggle the Reader View state. Reader View is a popular feature of the Firefox browser, that changes the appearance of a web page, and makes it more readable by removing visual clutter such as images, ads, headers, and sidebars. Reader View is, however not available, for all home pages. If the feature is available for a certain page, you will find the icon to enable it in the shape of a small book icon displayed to the right of the address bar. Chrome Reader View comes with a few pre-built customization options such as dark, light and sepia backgrounds, adjustable font sizes, and serif and sans-serif typefaces. You can customize the theme by overriding the CSS rules of these pre-existing options. “Websites are often jampacked with distractions and their design is inconsistent. This makes it easy to lose focus and sometimes even forget what it was that we were reading,” said Peter Wallman, SVP of browsers at Opera. “Our goal with the improved reader mode is to allow our users to focus solely on the articles of their choice and to give them a consistent and pleasant reading experience.” The reader mode puts content front and center Opera’s improved reader fixes problems such as dense layouts and small fonts. The improved reader mode in the browser utilizes fonts such as Roboto for the text body and Roboto Slab when it comes to the headlines. The font sizes were selected based on feedback from Opera users and a series of tests. The chosen font sizes were the most comfortable to read, even for people who have vision problems. Roboto Slab also includes serifs, which makes article headlines look more like newspaper headlines and differentiates the text from the system font used in the rest of the browser’s UI. Once enabled, the reader mode converts suitable web pages into a simplified format, displaying a neater version of the articles: the font is changed for maximum readability, and the top navigation, as well as ads on a website, is hidden. • (2021-03-06) Stephanie G.: Installed ReadBee, Reading mode and Reader View plus (the last two are the same, actually) and compared them. In my opinion, Reading mode / Reader View plus this one is the best. There are only a handful of settings, but those are all you need. Customizing the settings to suit your individual taste takes like 20 seconds. Great addon, thank you! EDIT / FEATURE REQUEST: It would really come in handy if you'd add the possibilty to assign a keyboard shortcut to trigger reading mode. Adding a shortcut via Extensions > Keyboard shortcuts doesn't work (tried several combinations). After a quick google search I learned that the developer has to add this feature first.
  • (2021-02-04) Gerardo Rodriguez: I think it works fine, but it took me a couple of minutes and some clicking like crazy to get it running. What worked for me was to select a couple of lines and then right click on the selected text. The extension is on the right-click menu.I stopped it and played it again and it started reading from the beginning of the page.
