Chart Image Utility is targeted at users who interact with published charts of data and need to get accurate interpolated values of the underlying dataset. This is a common problem in many engineering fields. The extension provides an alternative to estimating by eye or printing the chart and using a pencil/ruler approach.
The extension works on charts with linear axes and is easy to use. The user first uploads an image of the chart. Then reference points are selected by the user to define the origin and reference points on each axis. The user then populates the corresponding value in axis units associated with each reference point. Finally, the user can then click on the chart and a table is populated with the coordinates of the clicked point in chart units.
