This plugin is open source (https://github.com/StefanoChiodino/amazon-smile-redirect-plugin). The code of this plugin is small and straightforward: if Amazon Smile is available you'll get redirected to it.
Your data doesn't leave your browser. In fact, this plugin has only access to domains like www.amazon.com which are immediately redirected to the smile domain, where it doesn't run at all.
