Add configurable labels to Google Calendar event colors

Image from store Calendar Color Labels
Description from store Google Calendar offers the ability to color events on the a calendar. However, it is often hard to remember which color is used for which events type. This extension adds a configurable set of labels that can be used to add meaning to event colors. The label will be displayed as a hint when you hover over the color when setting it. You can also set the color names themselves with is useful for using Google Calendar with languages other than English (which is the default).

  • (2023-07-20) Sarah Lesselbaum: It works on the web if you leave the original color name in the left column and the new name in the right column. It would be 5 stars if it also worked to change the names on my google calendar phone app but I cannot seem to do that.
  • (2023-07-08) Brendan Mulvaney: I've been very happy with this since we installed it. But as the organization has grown, I now need a way to add new colors and then new labels to those colors. It seems like this is limited to the "set pack" of colors that come with the extension. Is there a way to add more?
  • (2023-02-26) Stephanie Rae Thompson (StephRae): It does work but you must close Chrome. Sort of like the old fashioned reboot after install. It is quite lovely thereafter. A simple instruction would help there ratings, it is a shame because it is a very nice feature that should have been built in. I hope Google just buys them out for millions 🌟
  • (2023-02-14) Tim Barrett: Worked great. Hard to find the settings so that would explain why people are frustrated, but that's a chrome issue not the extensions issue. I followed Michelle's review and found it no problem. You do have to hover for a second for the color name to appear but that's no problem and it will reinforce it as I memorize the colors. To change the names: On the Chrome 3-dot menu (in your browser menu not your calendar), choose More Tools, then Extensions. Find this extension, click the slider to turn it on (if it isn't already). Then click View Details. In the list you'll see "Extension Options"--click there, and THIS is where the menu is to change the labels. After that I refreshed my calendar and I was up and running. Thanks for a great and simple tool!
  • (2022-12-12) Sarah Cuellar: Give it a try! Make sure you leave the left column as the original color labels. On the right column enter the names you want applied. After I make changes I refresh my calendar. Usually the first color option I hover over will show the original name for a second but then start hovering over everything else and you will see all your labels there.
  • (2022-09-17) Accurate Appliance Electronics Services: Installed it and it din not work. no new colors in my calendar. Very poor instructions and documentation.
  • (2022-08-26) Michelle Dickens: So I added this earlier this year and made a few custom labels, then could never figure out how to get back in the settings! FINALLY found it. On the Chrome 3-dot menu, choose More Tools, then Extensions. Find this extension, click the slider to turn it on (if it isn't already). Then click View Details. In the list you'll see "Extension Options"--click there, and THIS is where the menu is to change the labels. I was looking everywhere in the calendar options, not intuitive at all but finally stumbled upon it.
  • (2022-07-27) Angela DeFranco: Installed it yesterday. At first I didn't see the additional colors in my Google Calendar. ...then all of a sudden I did. I noticed that when I first saved a new calendar entry it would not show, and then after I went it to edit that entry I had options to add colors (that were then available for new entries going forward.) It was working today when I logged in. I had to restart my computer for a Dell laptop upgrade (no upgrade was made to my Chrome browser at that time.) Now it's not working at all. Very frustrating, because I really liked it. I didn't really use the labeling option, but I used the colors for everything. I hope this can be fixed. I'm not sure why it's not working anymore.
  • (2022-07-17) David Rowe: Worked for me. Just what I needed it for. I can't understand why Google have not added this feature but I am very grateful to the creator/s of this add on. It makes it so much easier to organise things now that I can quickly see which colour I have assigned for each event. Thanks.
  • (2022-07-14) Amanda McGinnis: Does not work.
  • (2022-07-08) David Smith: Does not work
  • (2022-07-02) Mervyn Chua: Rated a 3 star for now cause I can't seem to change the name of each colour. Am I allowed/able to do so? For now if I hover over each colour, it'll have a name. That's the only improvement I see. For example Yellow is banana while red becomes tomato. Like to be able to change it to my own settings and description
  • (2022-04-26) Marcus Hui: It "works" for me. The old color still show up first, just gotta give a second for the other label to show up. Not perfect but this will do for now.
  • (2022-04-05) gail marie: Does not Work. Like most said was hopeful. Why does Google not allow you to Label the colors-it should be a very EASY Fix and people have been asking for years! For example: Graphite-labled work' Sage labeled -Medical etc or whatever you want!
  • (2022-04-03) Dirk van der Bijl: Doesn't work
  • (2022-03-09) Youn Lee: Doesn't work either.
  • (2022-02-19) Emma Koubayssi: Was hoping it would work but doesn't, please Google add this feature! It's basic organisation management 101
  • (2022-01-13) Tanya Jorgensen: Works great for me! Unclear as to why Google wouldn't just add this feature, but this is a good fix.
  • (2022-01-04) Erin M. Kiella: Worked! Thank you!
  • (2021-11-10) Steve Cartwright: It does not work, got it installed and activated, updated the colour/tag matrix, but when i hover over the colour tags it does not label them. Gave up after a couple of hours mucking around with with it and searching blogs for a bug fix....now waiting for google to fix it.
  • (2021-11-05) Adele Hardie: hasn't worked for me. Yes agree with the others, google should just add this feature, it would add so much to the usefulness . I have 6 categories at the moment and have to keep refering to my list to see what colour I should give it.
  • (2021-10-18) Christina Darby: I mean it works. Not the most practical thing in the world as you have to hover over the colour for a second or 2 before it shows up, but it's nice if you think it'll help you stay more organized. I do wish that it would transfer over to the mobile app though. Other than that, it's alright.
  • (2021-09-15) Josh Zoellner: Worked for me and did exactly what it said. You have to hover over each color for a second before the tag pops up. Does not work for mobile devices though, only desktop. If Google would simply allow you to pick which colors you want to use for your calendar and label them yourself it would solve so many problems for users.
  • (2021-09-02) Dan Solley: Like everyone else said - simply doesn't work. I was so optimistic. Le sigh.
  • (2021-09-02) Si Turner: I was hopeful, but does not work. Wish this existed natively
  • (2021-08-06) maria vigna: this extension just straight up doesnt work.
  • (2021-07-09) The hints do not carry into the calendar. I've tried re-installing multiple times. It also doesn't allow to give site permission.
  • (2021-07-06) Anna: I have tried multiple times, on already existing and new events, always refreshed the page, but for some reason only the Flamingo tag appears.
  • (2021-03-01) Eyal Erez: Solves a problem that Google calendar should solve itself.
