Elmiron is a medication used to treat bladder pain syndrome (interstitial cystitis) and other urinary tract problems. WHAT IS ELMIRON?
Elmiron is the brand name of a popular prescription drug manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals. Millions of people take Elmiron every day to treat chronic bladder conditions.
Known by the brand name Elmiron, methlylsulfonyl urea is a type of drug called a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor. These drugs work by preventing the body from reabsorbing carbon dioxide, which causes increased urination and flushed skin in those who use Elmiron. Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors like Elmiron are commonly used to treat gout, a type of arthritis that causes painful uric acid crystals to form in the body.

Elmiron may cause damage to a part of the retina called the macula, causing vision problems. The type of maculopathy linked to Elmiron is called pigmentary maculopathy. According to studies, this type of maculopathy seems to be unique to Elmiron users.
According to the National Institutes of Health, drugs that contain ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) are generally safe and effective when used as a treatment for iron deficiency anemia. Unfortunately, evidence suggests that Elmiron, a drug that contains FCM as its active ingredient, may come with the risk of serious eye damage.
The Food and Drug Administration recently issued a public health advisory regarding the link between Elmiron and a serious eye condition called optic neuropathy. The condition, which causes vision loss, is believed to be caused by a chemical reaction between the drug and another medication. More than 10,000 cases of this condition have been documented, with the majority taking place in forty- and fifty-year-old women who are taking the largest dose of Elmiron.
ELMIRON LAWSUITS FOR VISION LOSS MACULOPATHY
Elmiron lawsuits claim the drug causes an eye disorder called maculopathy and other disorders of the retina that may lead to blindness. People who took Elmiron and suffered maculopathy or other serious vision problems may be eligible to file an Elmiron lawsuit.

WILL THERE BE AN ELMIRON RECALL?

However, the pain relief drug Elmiron was approved by the FDA back in 2006, and there still have not been any major recalls speaking of. In fact, the only complaints that have been made thus far seem to be coming from people who are looking for an Elmiron recall. (It has been suggested that the reason the FDA has not called for a recall of Elmiron is that they do not want to admit that there might have been a mistake in the first place.)
In the past, the FDA has issued recalls for medications that have the potential for causing serious side effects to those taking them. (In fact, over 800 prescription drugs are available with the potential to cause serious side effects.) One medication in particular, Elmiron, which was approved by the FDA in 1997, has prompted a number of recalls as the drug has been linked to serious side effects. After being called out in a lawsuit for not releasing documents related to the effectiveness and safety of Elmiron, the FDA released documents that revealed that the drug had been shown to be less effective (and sometimes even less safe) than other medications that have been available for longer.
