Why I Think Faronics Insight Is Not a Good App Faronics Insight is an app teachers use to watch and control student computers in class. I know some teachers like it because it helps them keep everyone focused, but there are a lot of reasons I think it’s not a good app. I’ll explain them in a way a middle schooler would say, with examples and reasons. It Feels Like Someone’s Always Watching One of the worst things about Faronics Insight is that it can let teachers look at your screen. That means if you’re researching something private or reading a message, someone could see it. It feels scary and weird when you can’t have any privacy. Students might stop asking questions or looking things up if they think they’ll be watched. Privacy matters. When people watch you all the time, you don’t feel comfortable. It can make students nervous. That’s not good for learning. It Can Be Used Too Strictly Another problem is teachers can lock screens, close websites, or control your computer without asking. Sometimes teachers need to get everyone’s attention, but using a computer lock all the time is like being punished instead of taught. It stops creativity. If you’re working on a project and the teacher locks everyone out, you lose your work or flow. It makes school feel strict. Classroom rules are important, but using a tool like this too much feels mean. What If Something Goes Wrong? Software sometimes breaks. If Faronics Insight has a bug or an update goes wrong, lots of students could lose work or get stuck. Imagine doing a test and the program crashes — that would be a disaster. Tech problems = lost time. Class time is important and can’t be wasted fixing issues. It can cause mistakes. Someone could accidentally lock all computers by mistake. It Can Be Unfair The app might be used more on some students than others. If a teacher watches only certain kids a lot, it could feel like favoritism or punishment. Also, using logs or screenshots to discipline kids can be unfair because context is lost — a screenshot doesn’t tell the whole story. Surveillance can be biased. It might target students who are already getting in trouble. Logs don’t tell everything. A picture of a screen is not the same as knowing why someone clicked something. It’s Not Always Friendly for Everyone Some tools don’t work well with assistive technology like screen readers. If a student has a disability, an app that doesn’t support them can make learning harder. Accessibility is important. Everyone should be able to use school tech. Different devices, different problems. Chromebooks, Macs, and Windows computers might behave differently with the app. When It Could Be Okay I’m not saying the app is always bad. It can help during tests or when younger kids need extra supervision. But it should be used carefully, with rules and permission from parents, and only when necessary. Use it only for specific reasons. Tell students and parents what it does. Conclusion Faronics Insight is powerful, but that power can be used the wrong way. It can make students feel watched, stop creativity, cause tech problems, be unfair, and not work for everyone. If a school uses it, they should have clear rules, tell families what’s happening, and make sure it doesn’t replace real teaching. Tech should help students learn, not scare them or take away their privacy. If you want, I can help you write a short note for parents that explains the problems with apps like this in simple words.
