Modern, dark mode for Google Docs
DocsAfterDark relieves eye-strain from the Google Docs experience with a focus on functionality and artful design.
Easily enable or disable dark mode for any document without modifying the original project. Access dark mode settings and more in the extension option menu, which can be accessed by clicking on the extension icon in the browser toolbar.
Customize the document background to a darker shade, or use any valid background CSS value in the custom field, including images, gradients, and transparent backgrounds.*
With the invert and grayscale options, document content (excluding images*) will be rendered in a comfortable dark mode. By disabling the document border option, documents will blend into the background to create a seamless workspace.
To temporarily toggle dark mode on/off, click on the button in the bottom left corner of the page. Sometimes this button may block other elements, such as the word count widget. When this occurs, enable the Raise Button toggle in the option menu.
The global toggle in the option menu can be used to disable/enable the extension.

- (2023-11-15) Ijnúm: Está bastante bien, alivia la vista y cumple con su función. Gracias. Escribir ahora es más cómodo para mí.
- (2023-11-13) Rajvansh: Made my day!
- (2023-11-05) Livienvi: I use a lot of pictures and color in my document so suffice to say I can't use this :( Every color will be changed into grayscale, other than that this is so far the best dark mode extension for Google Docs.
- (2023-10-30) Sakura: I love this! It makes using google docs wayy easier and doesnt block any of the uis. The only flaw to this is that when you try to color the texts, it makes it a darker grey rather than the color. But when you turn off greyscale, you can color it but the colors will be inverted. Still the best extension I have ever downloaded and I'm glad that I found this! I totally recommend this if you are working on projects for school, work, or if you're an author/writer on google docs.
- (2023-09-22) PintelZYT: very nice, very wierd how its not on the top of the serach results when seraching dark mode for docs, better than all the other alternatives, BIG LIKE
- (2023-08-26) sea tea: This is the best dark mode Google Docs extension out there! However, I'm not sure how to operate the custom color page when you want to in put CSS code. I still love this extension anyway though, haha.
- (2023-08-07) Autumn M Neely: Better than other options for dark mode in google docs. Unfortunately colored text will be a shade of gray instead of colored, and since I use colorcoding in many of my documents, this extension is not for me.
- (2023-08-06) Mads Vibæk-Nielsen: Best dark mode extension for Google Docs I could find. Hoping for Google Sheets support soon!
- (2023-08-03) Portia Yin: it is probably the best available extension for for making a dark mode for google docs. I also like that the shade is not #000000 dark which can be rough on the eyes. The only downside is that the "Document Background" button is definitely buggy, as if I try to mess with anything it'll leave me with a white doc background, and I have to remove/reinstall the extension to get it to work again. However it does say on the button that the feature is unstable, so I get it. That would be the only downside. Other than that works great!
- (2023-08-01) Kaden: exactly what i needed, better on the eyes than most others.
- (2023-07-25) Mutant Record: I have yearned for something like this thank you writer god you are a real one...
- (2023-07-17) Brooks Walsh: Not only does this extension use a greyscale that is easy on the eyes, but the fact that you can turn it on/off with a small, easy to use button in the bottom-left makes it near perfect. This needs more attention, or to be default with chrome. My only minor issue with it so far is the lack of an option to skip the color inversion on images (but I can see in a reply to another review that this is maybe being worked on?). With that option added, it would be the perfect dark mode and I would add nothing else to it.
- (2023-07-13) Adam Jaremek: Please fix the outline - you can hardly read it
- (2023-07-12) Carlo Fabrizio: The best. Also inverting colors of images and it's very easy to toggle, wonderful experience
- (2023-07-01) S: Uses a nice greyscale instead of the harsh black and white of other extensions. Immediately improved my experience with Google Docs.
- (2023-06-20) Cy Jones: best dark mode docs extension
- (2023-06-14) Sean Hammond: None of the other docs dark mode extensions actually made everything dark, and unlike the others the UI is up to date. Very nice!
- (2023-06-11) George Kolasa: Very nice extension
- (2023-05-29) Diego Torres: Funciona! hace justo lo que promete. FIN
- (2023-05-22) Khon: I do like this, but it seems the docs background selector does not work on chrome. The inverted works but only shows black. I dont partically like grayscale and would love to my color highlights in dark theme. I hope this get updated soon
- (2023-05-22) Jonathon Gillis: I have used DocsAfterDark for months and love it! However, a few months ago there was an update which broke the colors on the left outline panel which makes the font color a dark gray color, and makes it very hard to see with the dark background behind it. I was told this was a known issue and would be fixed but never was, at least for the Google Chrome version. I saw an update which looks like it addressed the issue on Firefox and not Chrome. I reached out to support a while back and haven't heard from anyone. I'd appreciate it so much if this can be fixed because it's very hard to read the text.
- (2023-05-03) Juli T.: It's great! Sooo comfortable for my eyes!
- (2023-04-28) Anonymous: This is a great extension! My eyes feel a lot better! The only downside is there is no color. But if you can get past that, it's wonderful! :)
- (2023-04-27) Shayan Ahmed: The best dark mode for docs. But no dark mode on homepage.
- (2023-04-24) Jake1774: The only extension that makes everything on the screen dark, nice!
- (2023-04-10) Toby Wilhelm: worked great. one of the best dark mode extensions here
- (2023-03-31) Stardust: works well and looks really good! my only disappointment was that it inverts and greyscales the document itself, so my black doc with white text and coloured headings became white with black text and grey headings; i switched the paper and text colours and now it looks beautiful, but still a bit disappointing to lose colour, however i'll take the tradeoff for it being easier on my eyes - thank you tons for making this!
- (2023-03-31) Simon: Great extension, that has taken a lot of care to get the small details right. Well done. The only issue I have is that the images are also inverted when the document is set to "inverted". Would be good if the main document body could be inverted without affecting the images also. But it's not a huge deal.
- (2023-03-29) Aurora Boli: I think this is a really well made extension, especially compared to other options. Some problems I had with it though is the little toggle from light to dark interferes with the word count. Also, the images are inverted. But that's not enough to bring the rating down! Really well made.
- (2023-03-25) William Richards: google needs to add this feature to google docs
- (2023-03-18) Gloria Efata: Finally the good one! Thank you for saving my eyes <3
- (2023-03-18) Zeku: Simple and straightforward, doesn't clutter the screen with toggle garbage, just a small icon in the lower left corner
- (2023-03-15) Alex Crow: Thank you to the developer for the quick fixes regarding the issues caused by the Google Docs redesign. This is an amazing extension, could not recommend it enough.
- (2023-03-15) ambrosia jaden: loved it! but there's a glitch with the custom document mode. it doesn't work :( it used to work before.. hope this gets fixed soon!
- (2023-03-15) Enai Kirai: the color picker doesn't work, at most only the default color works, and the invert button works. The grey will work for now, i hope the colors can be fixed somehow.
- (2023-03-15) TillTripJake: i cant get docs after dark to work on my slides its only working on docs if that's intentional or not but if so you should make some for slides to
- (2023-03-15) Anthony Reinowski: Does exactly what it needs to do without adding anything extra. Perfect, no weird glitches or anything seen with other dark mode extensions.
- (2023-03-14) Jonathon Gillis: I've been using this extension for months and love it! The most recent update, however, has for some reason made the font color for the outline text on the left nearly unreadable. It's very dark gray text now, whereas before it was a lighter gray and easy to read. I hope this was a mistake, because it's really making it difficult to see the text.
- (2023-03-14) Full Exposure: Set URL links to light grey so you can barley see them and now with latest update the subheadings in your index are the same. Gets worse with each "update". you never know what you gonna get when it updates.
- (2023-03-14) Judith L.: Love it. Thank you guys for your great work. Working with Google Docs was simply not possible for my eyes before I discovered this plugin. Now I love it and completely moved all my work. Keep up the great work and many thanks again!
- (2023-03-14) Aurel: I love it, just the best dark mode extension on chrome, but with the UI update it just bug a lot, please update it. Its use less for now:c
- (2023-03-11) Dimitrije Andjelkovic: There was some update on the google docs, so some areas that wer in dark mode ane now white, especially in the naw bar. By the way, i like this extension and highly recomend it.
- (2023-02-26) Dan Nichols: Awesome! but sadly images are inverted as well. Would be nice if images could be excepted from the dark mode :(
- (2023-01-26) James Dahlberg: amazing! perfectly recreates dark mode docs like it is on mobile, which is awesome for me because i feel more comfortable writing on a PC. love the options it gives you, too. my only gripe is that the button to switch back to light mode in the corner overlaps the word count popup, but that's just me. it works fine there otherwise!
- (2023-01-19) Clout Goggles: "Thank you so much"- My retinas
- (2023-01-14) Yovan Grbovic: Excellent!
- (2022-02-28) Jeffrey Nichtberger: Actually works, but seems to confuse itself when the 'auto dark mode' Chrome flag is enabled. In that case, setting a dark background makes the text unreadable since the text doesn't become white, so the only viable option for me is the 'invert' feature, which inverts page color and text. But there's another bug: Every 3rd page doesn't actually get its page inverted, so it becomes unreadable with white text. It likely has to do with the Chrome dark mode. Please fix this. It would be great if you supported inverting Google sheets as well.
- (2022-02-28) Hridya Nadappattel: My eyes thank you so much for this. Will you be releasing versions for other google doc products like spreadsheets and slides?
- (2022-02-19) Alma Eyre: Actually works! Unlike other extensions that claim to do the same thing.
