Try this extension: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/odjfoclbnmllekbhpbgopiiaelcpeimb 🌄 Theme background When Clear New Tab is installed and "Theme background" mode is selected, the backgrounds of themes you install from the Chrome Web Store will automatically download and appear in the new tab. If the theme background appears too large or small, you can fix it by setting "Background size" to "Cover the screen." 🖼️ Your own background Upload your own background (image, GIF, or video) or choose a custom color to display in the new tab page. 🔁 Cycle through different backgrounds Clear New Tab can cycle through your backgrounds, showing a different one each time you open a new tab. 🎨 Random solid color Display a randomly generated solid color background each time you open a new tab. 📅 Schedule a background In "Scheduled" mode, Clear New Tab lets you display specific backgrounds at the dates and times you choose. ---------------------------------------------------------------- ❓ FAQ There's no search bar. How do I search the web? Use the address bar for web searches. The bookmarks bar doesn't show in the new tab. Why does Clear New Tab hide it? Clear New Tab doesn't hide it; if an extension replaces the default new tab, Chrome automatically hides the bookmarks bar. To make it always visible, press Ctrl + Shift + B. How can I eliminate the "white flash" before a background loads? Adjust the "Color of the area around the background" setting. Ensure that "Settings context" is set to "Global." The theme background doesn't fit the screen. How do I fix it? Select "Cover the screen" or "Fit to the browser window" in the "Background size" dropdown. Custom HTML links aren't working. How do I fix them? Add target="_top" to the <a> tag. Read and change your data on clients2.google.com and clients2.googleusercontent.com Allows the extension to download a theme CRX package containing the theme background and other data, such as background-repeat and color of the area around the background. Manage your apps, extensions, and themes Allows the extension to detect when a theme is installed and provides information about the installed theme (e.g., theme ID, theme name). (2025-03-18) Allen Potter: Works great, but one request-- please make it so that when backgrounds are shuffled, the extension cycles through all of them before returning to the start of the order. I have multiple video backgrounds, and frequently I see the same ones over and over again (slideshow function doesn't work well because the videos are different lengths), while I don't see others at all. For instance, I'd like to see videos 1, 2, and 3 before I see any of them repeated.
(2025-02-24) El La: Lately, and by lately I mean several months now, it keeps wiping out the picture I have set as my background and gives nothing but a blank page - over and over again. I upload my picture again and it works for a while, until it wipes it out of its memory again and it gives a blank page again. This keeps happening over and over again, it is incredibly frustrating.

I loved how we can upload our own videos and images to show on the, new and clear, new tab (which was otherwise cluttered with unnecessary icons and the Google search bar. Would love for some simple but impactful controls, would love more customization. Otherwise, this is amazing! Must get for organized people!

(2024-08-08) Xavier Paradiso: I just wanted new tabs to open with my own image, this plugin did the job simply and directly. I loaded my image, set scaling to Fit to Browser Window, matched the outer background color to the background color of my image and done in a two minutes. Perfect!

Really good and stable, I didn't face any problems setting it up and using it. And for anyone that uses bookmarks like me, it hides the bookmarks bar but if you just go (from Chrom's settings) you can make it visible again or just press ctrl + shift + B to toggle it between hidden and visible. Really you made my day.
