Chrome does not let you customize the new tab page. The new tab page always opens a custom Google Search page, and Chrome extensions do not work on this page.
This extension lets you point the new tab page to a URL of your choice. It can be Google.com, your company's homepage, or a blank page. It is lightweight on your browser (<50kb - compared to, for example, Grammarly, which is 36MB), has no tracking, and is straightforward to use.
Some popular choices:
1) Google - https://google.com
2) Voice In Notepad - https://dictanote.co/voicein/notepad/
3) Bing - https://www.bing.com
4) ChatGPT - https://chat.openai.com
5) Blank Page - about:blank
You can also set it to a local file path like file:///C:/Documents/test.html . You can set the URL to an internal page like chrome://apps too.
Customization:
1) Focus on the address bar on the new tab page: When checked, the focus and cursor are in the address bar when you open a new tab page. When unchecked, the focus is on the page.
If you want to disable the custom new tab extension, you can do so by going to chrome://extensions and disabling this extension.

- (2025-02-16) Stefan Monov: I tried setting my new tab page to: chrome-extension://edacconmaakjimmfgnblocblbcdcpbko/session-buddy.html ... and got a "This page has been blocked by Chrome" error.
- (2024-07-30) Anonymous: Functions as mentioned. That's it. If you want to uninstall the extension, you can't just right-click and "Remove from Chrome", because it still does the same thing. Then you have to REINSTALL it and set something in the address bar and try a few times until it works with the new address. Then just clear out the URL in the address bar and click "save" and THEN remove it from Chrome. (Or just do all this before uninstalling it in the first place). SOOO annoying.

- (2024-06-06) bridgit kimani: I was frustrated with the lack of customization options for the new tab page in Chrome. This extension has been a game-changer. It lets me set any URL I want for the new tab page, and the focus remains on the address bar. I've set it to Google.com, Voice In Notepad, and even a blank page. It's lightweight and easy to use. Highly recommend!
- (2024-06-06) Nitesh Tyagi: Great extension! It works perfectly and does exactly what it's supposed to do. Simple and fantastic!
- (2024-06-06) GoGoJoe: I had the same problem as Atul Patil, dealing with "Allow access to file URLs" permission for this extension:". In my frustration I had left a negative one star review, which I have now deleted. Eventually I stumbled on how to contact the developer, and explained the issue I was having. The Developer quickly responded to me, and fixed the problem. The New Tab now appears to be working just fine for me with my local file URL.
- (2024-04-20) Atul Patil: Everything is working fine for external URL's, but when I am trying to serve a local HTML file it says with a warning "If your URL is a local file then you will have to enable the "Allow access to file URLs" permission for this extension:" When I click on the grant Permission button, it takes me to the extension settings, but I dont see any option to grant permissions for the extension. Could you please help me in find that?
- (2023-12-09) Saikat Sarkar: THANK YOU. THANK YOU.THANK YOU.THANK YOU. It does work in BRAVE Browser. It does what it's suppose to do. SIMPLE. Normally I don't do 5 Stars. But....meh..

- (2023-05-27) Chris S: This creator is someone you should support. Period. Short story long: I am making a small search tool that uses this extension to open a new tab and remove ~3 extra clicks and it sort of hinges on being able to auto focus on the page, rather than the address bar (which is what this extension does by default). Upon emailing the creator, he told me what I needed to do to remove this functionality but unfortunately when I tried, it would "corrupt" the extension. I already felt like I was wasting this person's time so I told them that I appreciated their help, but I would not be able to use their solution to my problem and wished them a good day. To my surprise, I woke up to an email saying they uploaded a new version of the extension that would allow me to easily disable this function and that it's pending approval from Chrome... This person went above and beyond to help a small creator out and for that, I really appreciate them. Again, thank you, kind soul :)

- (2023-04-29) Ed Bockelman: Exactly what I was looking for. There's another, more popular extension to do the same thing, but this one works as well or better so I wanted to give it some love.

- (2023-02-03) Chris Hawryluk: Jan 9, 2023 Exactly what I wanted. Use a custom site as your new tab. Beats me having to press the home icon or the site again when I can just simply use this. SearchThat.net has all my links in the speed dial so this awesome. Thanks. Feb 2, 2023 Update: Still loving it. I don't need to deal with any basic speed dial page. I have all the functions I need from ST. Never remove this from the web store. If you do, I'll take it over and keep it up.
