Description from store This extension alerts you when you're on a news site that isn't deemed "real news" by Melissa Zimdars, assistant professor of communication & media at Merrimack College. The inspiration for this extension comes from her work 'False, Misleading, Clickbait-y, and Satirical “News” Sources'. Update: the alert now also displays the reason for the site's categorization as "fake news" if one has been provided in Zimdars' research. Update 2: Added additional questionable source URLs as well as Facebook hover-over warnings, inspired by BSDetector.

  • (2017-04-05) Alan Hoyle: I appreciate the warnings. I wish there was a way to suppress them for some sites. E.g. I'm familiar with The Onion and don't need to be notified with multiple pop-ups there as I scroll.
  • (2016-12-14) Aaron Schulz: Useful when I follow links that inadvertently take me to questionable sites. Usually I run for the hills, but sometimes I read anyway, with the appropriate grains of salt.
  • (2016-12-01) Mike: While I can appreciate some aspects of this tool, it is unfortunately a form of Chinese style censorship in the sense that if a website doesn't agree with an agenda, it can be put on a 'list'. Without even looking at the content of the website, the user is coerced into thinking a negative view of it. You're putting your trust in someone else, rather than making up your own mind; Are you a slave, or are you free to think for yourself? If you see the wisdom in these words, then you understand freedom and critical thinking.
