• (2025-08-19) Jonathan Grose: Couldn't get this to work at all in Brave browser. I set my API key, which it didn't accept at first until I gave it unrestricted access, then when I tried to use the play button, the options pop up. Tried different voices/models - nothing. It says to press ctrl+h to play highlighted text, but ctrl+h is the shortcut to open history. Highlighting the text & right clicking on it also does nothing. This extension is also quite misleading, it is not created by Eleven Labs, it just uses their system to read text on the screen. So I'm giving an unrestricted Eleven Labs API key with tons of credits on it to some random person? No thanks. Use ReadAloud instead.

As of August 9 2025: if you're having an invalid API key error, give your API key access to more things by going on https://elevenlabs.io/app/settings/api-keys > [click on the pencil icon next to the API key you're using] > click on everything that says "No access" and change it to "Has access" or "Read only" or "Read and write". If you prefer being careful about what you give access to, do that *and then* run the same process in reverse; start reducing access little by little; each time testing if the extension still works. At some point you'll find the minimum required access and you'll share it here in a review because you're a good person. • (2025-07-24) Ali Ward: The app is great and probably one of the best TTS apps I've used. A few issues: 1- I had to use my own API to use it. Is there a way to generate API keys for free or paid? 2- Please create a hotkey for Windows that works as the default one is control+h which opens history on chrome and there is no way to change it. 3- Please allow a function to override websites that prevent copy text which makes it harder to initiate select to speak. 4- Please consider creating a mobile version of this awesome extension that works in a similar manner. • (2025-03-04) Daniel Murray: Everything looks good, but I just got a message from ElevenLabs saying I can’t use it. I hardly use it at all, so I’m not sure what’s causing the issue. I definitely haven’t been overusing it—I only check the pronunciation of words occasionally. "MESSAGE FROM ELEVENLABS: Unusual activity detected. Free Tier usage disabled. If you are using a proxy/VPN you might need to purchase a Paid Plan to not trigger our abuse detectors. Free Tier only works if users do not abuse it, for example by creating multiple free accounts. If we notice that many people try to abuse it, we will need to reconsider Free Tier altogether. Please play fair and purchase any Paid Subscription to continue."

• (2025-02-19) Wesley Vieira da Silveira (wesvie): Apparently it does not work with Google Docs... Like, at all. Weird. But otherwise, this is great! Also, VERY odd choice for a hotkey. I mean, Crtl+H??? That is universally known as open history, across the board, for any browser, Chrome very much included. So, please consider changing this or making it a custom hotkey.

• (2024-10-18) Matt Starfield: For some reason, it doesn't work on certain sites. For example, when I try to get it to read any section of this article (https://darioamodei.com/machines-of-loving-grace), the play button just spins forever. Also, the built-in keyboard shortcut to get it to read selected text is 'Ctrl-h', which is ALSO the History shortcut in Chrome. Why would they choose a shortcut that is already in use for the very browser this extension is made for? Poorly planned, and buggy.

• (2024-10-11) Will Clarke: I tried this extension as I am a big fan of ElevenLabs' automated voices. For my use case this extension is completely unviable. As I have dyslexia I rely on screen readers to understand the text I'm reading. The pricing of this solution seems to be aimed at content creators producing videos and other exported assets. It costs $99 for 10 hours of audio - so this would cost me more than $1000 a month - hence my 1 star review. The pricing model for this extension needs to be lower than general pricing which is aimed at exports. If you adjust your pricing for this extension, please let me know I will revise my rating. • (2024-07-24) Video Wizards: Sometimes audio playback won't work at all. When that happens, you have to restarting your browser. The little button next to selected text is really nice. But if you start playing the voice, there's no way to stop it without restarting your browser. The fact that I have to restart my entire browser multiple times to use it is a serious offense. 2 stars! You asked for a positive review, but this app is half baked.

• (2024-02-18) Daniel Roșu-Gutman: Works as advertised, but it's missing a very important feature. You cannot set the speed with which it reads. Also, for longer selections it takes a lot of time to start reading. My guess is that it tries to send the whole selection and then waits for the reply. It should send the first few sentences and as soon as it got the audio to send more and more of the text and queue them in memory. Also also, sometimes it skips the beginning of the first word, like the first letter or letters, or even smaller words like "the".
