- (2011-10-29) BladeRunner1868: Everyone knows, or most people do, that the Portuguese language comes from Portugal, not Brazil. Portugal NEVER "discovered" Brazil anymore than the Spaniards discovered the "New World". I am learning Portuguese to visit and trade with the people of Brazil, not Portugal. The flag is irrelevant in my opinion. It is usually there to give some type of geographical or perhaps cultural orientation, a symbol associated with the origin of the language. I speak Spanish and do not associate the Spanish flag with the Spanish language just same way the English flag with the U.K flag. Since I was born and raised in Colombia, South America, I don't have much rapport with Spain in lieu of what they did to the "undiscovered" so called "New World"; there were people living here before the Europeans came and "conquered". The rest is known history. Anyways, this app is helping me a lot to mingle with the people of Brazil, which I will be visiting shortly.
