  • (2022-06-04) Lisa S: Incredibly useful. I've used it for a few years now and it's perfect for first drafts. I tend to have fiction files, snippets and ideas in another document and a To Do that has writing notes and my daily tasks shoved in there too; all accessible from any of my devices when signed in via google. (I mostly use the browswer version). I love the customisation options for font and colours, and the sound of typewriter keys is great for nostalgia and gives me great satisfaction. My only quibble is that I've lost a small amount of data sometimes when the interent has been hinky and I've had to reload the 'jammed' page (data is supposed to be stored offline too but I've never found where). For my own peace of mind I now use the free export to PDF feature to back up important docs at end of day. If it were cheaper for a one-off payment I'd definitely buy and get access to the other export options too.
  • (2020-12-27) Rey: I went into this just looking for a place to write privately (Gdoc does not have locked documents, so I was looking for a site with a sign-in page.) But even after I was done with the project I originally needed it for, I loved it so much that it's now my sole writing spot. I love the simplicity of it all, the auto-save, and customization. There are no ads or areas of distraction on the page, and this lends well to not breaking that specific writing head-space. Other application like Grammarly still are available there (unlike on Word or Gdocs where subpar beta versions are used.) I really have no complaints. It seems to be built by writers for writers. Down to specific considerations like the setting to insert a tab when starting a new paragraph. I was pleasantly surprised and will continue using it for future projects! Thank you!
  • (2020-11-16) Els Nes: I have been enjoying my pro account for life for three years now, and I am still as thrilled as the first day I tried Writer. I love the sound of the typewriter, I would never change the initial green on black settings, I cherish the Hemingway mode, I cannot live without the words counting functions and definitely would fail all my professional assignments without the session and document goals. Then, Writer works perfectly in combination with editors in any language. And I could go on and on for hundreds of words about Writer.
  • (2020-10-21) Pamela Merritt: I'm in love. I think this is an awesome pairing for writers and Chromebooks, which also works with any other device. Together, we have a Drafting Machine. I've started using it for long tweets for further expansion, ideas which turn into drafts, and editing transcripts of my podcast. But then I figured out how to transfer a section from Scrivener into Google Drive, then paste the chapter I want to wrestle with into Writer. My laptop is getting old at seven years. So I'm trying to transfer much of my work into my Chromebook while I save up for a new one. In addition, the Chromebook is lighter, more battery life, and much cheaper. So it is something I feel comfortable taking out of the house. Writer is a great app to bridge those gaps. The default dark background with green letters is so easy on the eyes. It also "recasts" the words for me to help break writer's block. All this in just a week of playing with it! I'll be looking into the Pro version soon :)
  • (2020-08-01) Valdus Constante: Do not even bother looking around for another application to help you write, this is the one. Great options for Pro users. Tech support and screen changes are wonderful and easy. Just get the pro, wonderful!
  • (2020-02-23) William Fehr: The bell sound that you hear BEFORE the end of the line drives me nuts. I understand that it is supposed to be making the sounds of a typewriter but that totally unnecessary. If you must have it at least make it happen at the end of the line like a real typewriter, or let us have the option of turning it off. It's such a distraction. But hey, other than that, love it.
  • (2019-11-03) Brieuc-Yves Cadat-Lampe (Mellouki): So useful in all kind of situations where minimal writing is needed!
  • (2019-10-26) Nikolai Lkn: In description it says "works offline" , In fact - all it does is opening their website URL in browser where you suppose to register and write there. Totally unusable offline - Misleading - Not An App
  • (2019-08-06) ethan: It's a great app, however, it doesn't have hotkeys. (CTRL + I for Italic) Which I use alot. it was good, though!
  • (2019-04-29) SLVG: It was good, but after I signed in once, it wouldn't let me in the next time and I can't figure out how to sign back in.
  • (2019-03-27) Mike Hebel (RandomGreymane): I really like this app and currently have a Pro subscription that I will probably renew until I can afford the one-time purchase cost. Why a 4 instead of a 5? 1 - I can't open and save a document to/from a thumb drive even with the Pro version. This means I have to do manual file shuffling if I want to keep files personal off the cloud. 2 - The file structure is not complex and really needs to be able to do some simple folder organization at least. 3 - A rich text mode would make for a serious improvement. For putting down the word onto digital paper it's great...except when those words aren't just plain text. Foreign language formatting for one comes to mind. I'm and old I/T guy so markup works okay for me, but the rest of the world is visual based for the most part and want to see real-time what they're typing. 4 - The typing window needs to be able to be adjusted. At least make it the current width of the browser. 5 - The menu text size should be adjustable for those of us with not-so-great eyeballs. ;-) 6 - It really should support OpenOffice format. The format is almost a standard now. Overall I like the product but there's always room for improvement. P.S. - In case some people haven't figured it out, the first line of your document becomes the filename. So renaming the document is as simple as changing that line.
  • (2019-01-22) Safiye Greye: I love this app. It's awesome, and I find it the most comprehensive and easy way to save my writing across devices; I can log into a web browser anywhere, and boom, I have everything. I bought the pro version, as I believe in supporting this kind of initiative, and I really do love it, however I have only given it 4 stars due to a few gripes I do have. If they were changed/fixed, it would be utterly PERFECT. They are: - The folder structure. I get that it is basic, which is good, and the introduction of the tagging system was useful, but if there was an option to actually have folders I would find it much more helpful in sorting my writing documents. I have so many that I have a bunch of pages to scroll through to sift through my docs, and the way it sequences them by order in which you last touched them is a bit of a nightmare to navigate currently for me. - The lack of ability to widen the word typing window is a mite frustrating. Most people have widescreen computers now, and the fact that the writing is only in this dinky little pane in the middle is a bit yeuch. - The fact that there is no italics, bold or underlining! (or the option to import foreign keyboards) I don't need fonts or anything fancy like that, I would just love to be able to write my name (Åsa) correctly!! I am swedish typing on an american keyboard, and the lack of å ä ö is driving me bonkers!! The lack of italics is also something I frustrating and it has a real impact on my workflow; I publish online a lot, and usually use italics for emphasis or thoughts of a character. As it stands, I have to export to a microsoft word doc, then manually go through and add italics where I put // symbols, which is just one unnecessary step I would prefer not to do. (the lack of em-dashes does also minorly irritate me, but I can forgive it as "--" is usually understood to be an em dash) Beyond these minor convenience points, it is the perfect little writer! I just wish there were these wee options, even if they were optional to switch on and off, or Pro-only features. The only thing that could make this better would be if it was a sync-able mobile app--then it really would cover anything and everything I could possibly need.
  • (2019-01-21) Kevin Aitken-Smith: Have just used the app on an Acer Chromebook to write a 15k novella, creating each chapter as an individual document. Clean and simple UI with a great retro style (I'm using green characters on black). I found that using the Manual Typewriter sounds for the keystrokes and using headphones makes the perfect white noise to aid concentration. I am going to be using this app from now on for everything I write because it does exactly what it claims - eliminates distractions allowing you to focus on getting the words down. Obviously the formatting options are limited (that's the whole point) so the document needs to be copied across to something more sophisticated to finish off - but for what it is intended for. First class
  • (2018-09-20) JKGC “JKGC” Productions: this
  • (2018-08-18) Anna Lippert: I'm in the testing phase, but love this app at first glance...
  • (2018-08-05) Julia “Jules” Marasa: Beautiful app. 4 instead of 5 because it keeps crashing on me while the other apps in my chromebook don't. I love everything else about it. Could not give it 5 stars because it crashed and I lost some writing because of it. (I hope the screen shots I took while it was crashing saved something.) Really sad. If it's an off-line app, I hope the team at Writer is still active and working on this. I feel like they may be at work repairing the buggies. That's my only hope. Lol.
  • (2018-05-07) Ferran Gálvez Castañeda: It's awfully buggy and the cursor randomly jumps back and forth through lines. Wish this would be fixed.
  • (2018-04-22) Douglas Snauffer: My top app for word processing. I absolutely love it!
  • (2018-03-12) Oliver Marti: Very good app. Considering the paid version, but... I really like the PDF-Coverter but it seems, it is not capable of showing the markdown tables correctly. Anybody else has this issue? Also I can´t change the header (written by...) to the german language plus there seems not to be a possibility to change your Username (written by...) to something other than an e-mail-address. Is this a feature in the pro-version? UPDATE: Free lines and spaces after the the markdown tables solve the problem. Also, the Pro-Version is a keeper. In my opinion the best web store app, it is fast, clean and all in all built for productivity. I love it.
  • (2018-03-10) Currently my favourite writing app. It has so much going for it, especially the fact that the free version does everything I need it to do. One day, I'll buy a lifetime subscription to support the Dev. But because I'm cheap, I'll wait until they do a Black Friday/Cyber Monday thing. I was considering it a while back at $50, but I see it's back up to $100 now. For now, thank you, Dev, for a great app :)
  • (2018-03-06) Jeremiah Bennett: I've been using the free version for years now, and in the past bought a monthly premium to it now and then and loved it even more. It's a great little piece of software you can take anywhere you can take chrome. Its perfect with so many good features without unnecessary fluff. I finally took the leap and bought the life time subscription, I only wish I did it sooner when it was only 50$ bucks but even at a hundred, its a great piece of software.
  • (2018-03-06) Sam Cel Roman: I'm a professional writer, and I couldn't live without this AMAZING product.
  • (2018-02-18) G Natale: This program worked perfectly for me at first! I loved the simplicity, the layout, it was great because I'm generally without wifi during the bulk of the day, when I write. The offline feature basically saved my life- until it stopped working for some odd reason. I'd be offline, making changes to a doc, and then when I got back online, the progress was just... gone? This started happening even if I began editing WHILE online, and I can't make heads or tails of it. I know I saved the changes, both times, but the progress is still gone?? I assume I'm just doing something wrong, but I wanted to put this down in warning or if anyone knew how to get my progress back tbh. Other than that, it's definitely a clean, nice app for online use.
  • (2018-02-14) Great writing tool. I use the free version because it has all I need. I like how even the free version allows you to customise appearance and settings. Paid for version looks like it brings a lot to the game as well. I'd have to say it's about the best 'writer' or text editor I've found in the Google Chrome Store.
  • (2018-02-08) Jesse Thomas: Very good. I am pleased with this and will recommend it to others. I am considering purchasing the paid version. A few unclear things: I'm not sure where it is saving to online. Is it the writer cloud? Also it does not seem possible to name your documents, although I'm not too phased by this. text/background bug: When changing the text and background color on acer Chromebook through settings it is necessary to make other formatting changes in order to click apply. It is possible to change the text/background, but setting colours does not automoatically trigger
  • (2018-01-03) 哈呼呼: not offline, but it is very useful for writing something . and the page is very clean . if only link to internet, you can write or change your artical at any where and on any equipment.
  • (2017-12-17) Daniel Bousho: Just get it.
  • (2017-11-23) Wayne Shepherd: Tried the app, couldn't do anything at all without signing in or creating an account (No thanks). Downloaded FocusWriter and was able to start distraction-free writing immediately and could save my work to my DropBox folder, set a timer, get word count, etc. without paying anything.
  • (2017-11-15) Simple, elegant. Fosters flow.
  • (2017-10-17) Mar's Guide to the Universe: love the tick tack typewriter sounds 10/10 would recommend
  • (2017-10-05) terra lynn: Been using it for years, I adore it, and when i'm working more I'd love to get pro,it's just a pretty steep pay wall
  • (2017-09-28) Jason Bottoms: Love it! The payments are not too high as spme are saying. Just some people wanting something for nothing!
  • (2017-09-10) Nick GJ: No matter what I try, I always return to this application. It just gets everything "right."
  • (2017-08-24) Abigail Holloway: Been using for almost a year, and it's great. I know it's a simple interface, but I do wish it had italicizing and bolding options.
  • (2017-08-17) Laura Dyball: Absolutely love this app! Great sounds, and visually awesome for a bit of nostalgia. Great for bashing out some word-processing, distraction free! Only downsides though, the Pro price is way too much for a simple word-processing app. I mean, monthly it's half as expensive as my Photoshop account. ...And that's Photoshop, aka - comlpete badass program. Also, would be great if you could have the option to export as PDF AND keep the colour/font formatting, rather than only being able to transfer to plain text.
  • (2017-08-08) Jaynkey: I wrote my reminders on there and that really helped thanks! :3
  • (2017-08-02) Russell Morgan: When you need to write something big you want a tool that minimizes distraction but gives you joy. This is that tool. I'm only using the free version at the moment but it's always my go to when I am ready to get deep into writing something. I would honestly consider the pro version except that I already own Scrivener so I'm happy to cut and paste out of this app for further refinements. In other words this is the perfect "first draft" tool.
  • (2017-08-01) sj: Simple and really easy to use
  • (2017-07-23) Lanie miller: I like it and all but it after a while it kicked me out Do NOT GET THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • (2017-06-06) Ryan Seeley: This is awesome- just the app I was looking for !!!!
  • (2017-05-19) Sasiru Goonatillake: I am a heavy procrastinator but the inferace really helped me focus out all the distractions. Headphones on, "Writer" out, work will flow. 10/10 would write again.
  • (2017-05-16) Thomas Hohnhaus: I love this app
  • (2017-05-16) Rene Proulx: I'm glad I have this writer back again.
  • (2017-05-16) Robert Phillips: this is the best writing app for chromebook..
  • (2017-05-12) Mulung H: I have stopped using this application after it failed to synchronize my work progress as promised and replaced my current progress with an old save two days ago. So freaking mad. Will never return to this app again.
  • (2017-05-12) June Bell: I can work anywhere with it online and offline. I have the best of both worlds, a typewriter sounds and my Chromebook. I am a mobile writer. Thanks I love it!!
  • (2017-05-09) Cherry Darling: Expected a simple text editor. Instead I am confronted with a log in screen at the developer's website. Clearly not for the slurp-adverse.
  • (2017-05-03) Rob Phillip: this is a great app for any type of writing. thank you.
  • (2017-05-01) Simon Jones: Beautiful, simple, succinct. No distractions and well thought through little tool. I love it and I've only used it a few hours.
