Transfer ownership of a Google Drive Folder, including all sub-folders and contents
Image from store
Description from store
This app will transfer ownership of a Google Drive folder, including ownership of all sub-folders and files. This extends the normal Google Drive functionality because Google Drive only allows you to transfer folders or files one at a time. Transferring ownership of a parent folder, for example, does not transfer ownership of the children files and folders. This app fills that gap by recursively transferring ownership of all files and folders within a single parent folder.
To launch app: click "Visit Website" button at top of window.
Usage
=====
Using this app is simple:
1. Select your folder with the Google Picker
2. Enter the new owner's email address
3. Click "Transfer Folder" and wait for the script to complete!
Notes
=====
* This cannot be undone! Do not transfer a folder to an email address you do not know or recognize!
* This script will send the new owner an email **for each folder and each file within the main folder**. This can result in a huge number of emails to the new owner, but unfortunately there is no way to suppress this behavior programmatically.
* If you do transfer it to the wrong person, immediately make a copy of the folder using my Copy Folder tool (search "Copy Folder" in the Webstore). This will ensure that you have a working copy of the files and that they aren't deleted without your permission.
* Any folders or files that you do not currently own will not be transferred.
* If using a browser other than Chrome, simply follow the "Website" link directly below this description.
Limitations
===========
Google Drive prohibits Transfer of Ownership in some circumstances. These include:
1) Transferring ownership of files or folders you don't own.
2) Transferring ownership of "synced" files. Examples of "synced" docs include uploaded PDFs, images, or plain-text files such as HTML. If a file is not a Google file (e.g. Docs, Spreadsheets, Slides), the ownership cannot be transferred.
3) Transferring ownership to someone outside your organization. For example, if your email address is at "@gmail.com" and you attempt to transfer to a "@company.com" email, it will fail.
If you attempt to transfer a folder and it (or any of its children files or folders) meets the first or second "prohibited" criteria, the web app will throw an error but continue transferring the eligible files and folders. If you attempt to transfer to someone outside your organization, the web app will freeze.
Privacy
=======
This app does not change sharing permissions on any files or folders, nor does provide visibility of any files or folders to anyone except the owner and the new owner. The transfer is done entirely through Google Drive and will not change the privacy of your files in any way, except for transferring ownership to the specified new owner.

- (2019-11-25) Bill Claxton: Has limited utility. Although it's described as an Extension, it does not appear in my Chrome Extensions list and I could not figure out how to remove it after trying it.
- (2019-09-24) Claire Leong: Great way to transfer ownership of folders. Just need to take note that it only works for google documents (e.g. google doc, google sheets).
- (2019-03-28) It does exactly what I needed it to do, plus it provides a great log saying what was and wasn't transferred. Awesome script!
- (2018-08-10) Kenneth Wilson: Appreciate that it's free. Limited use. Only works on google apps documents, not other file types (and it doesn't tell you this upfront).
- (2018-08-08) Kasey NavĂ Phifer: so helpful. just a few clicks and everything is done that google drive does not filter for.
- (2018-07-24) Miklos Takacs: Working like a charm. Would be useful to transfer the ownership of all files, but if you have a complex file system, the transfer of the Google Docs files and the folder structure is a good move.
- (2018-04-28) John Anson: Excellent. Thank you. Saved a lot of time. Great that it copes with the Google Script quota limits
- (2018-04-11) Srikanth Kalyanam: The sole purpose for me was to use it to move folders and also files, which it didnt warn before starting the whole thing that files will not be moved. Now, i have to undo the whole process and next try to downlaod everything locally with google sync client and upload everything. Thanks by the way...:) Maybe what i need is your "Copy Folder"
- (2018-02-27) Ben Vien: This tool made transitioning folders so much smoother. Thanks!
- (2018-01-18) Lukasz Bubel: There is a note in the apps description that the app ONLY transfers the ownership of folders and google docs (spreadsheets,etc). Yup... its true - did not work with all the files I wanted.
- (2018-01-09) Ricardo Romanillos: Worked well, thank you!
- (2018-01-09) John: Spent ages trying to find a way to do this through google drive, this application seems to do it all very well, including for mixed ownership folders.
- (2017-12-24) David Farrell: When I tried this app, I received a message after the transfer started that only google docs supported files ownership are transferred. I needed all the files in the folder of any type to have ownership transferred.
- (2017-08-14) Canh Le (Jing): Love this extension. it Helped me save a lot of time. Thanks
- (2017-07-10) Ezra Bekele: If you have an issue with permissions redirecting you to the permissions page, try signing out of all accounts and then signing back in with just the one account you want.
- (2017-07-07) Curran Schiefelbein: I am getting an error when I try to transfer ownership of a folder, which I own, but I do not own ALL the contents of it. It would be better if the script at least transferred ownership of everything possible, and then reported what wasn't possible. I get this error: Error: There was an error initializing the transfer folder request. Error message: Exception: No item with the given ID could be found, or you do not have permission to access it.. Please try again. Make sure you have correct permissions to transfer this folder, and make sure you are using Google Chrome or Chromium when using this app.
- (2017-04-29) Goyo Ambrosio: useless
- (2017-04-24) cSegno presentaciones: After installing, and granting access to my entire google account to this app, I run it... and only then I am informaed that: "Only Google files will be transferred. PDFs, images, Word docs, etc. will have to be transferred manually." This is simple making it useless. I am looking for a way to remove it from my chrome installation.
- (2017-01-20) Vince Meno: This worked as promised. It still is annoying that Google won't allow you to do a mass transfer of ownership of non Google files, so that is still a pain that I hope someone can solve.
- (2016-12-23) Wei-Chieh Chin (Adam): Got error message and ownership doesn't transfer. Please help me solve this problem. "Error: Failed to transfer folder. This most likely occurred because you aren't the owner of one of the sub-folders. Error message: ScriptError: Action not allowed."
- (2016-11-13) Murray Barnetson: The best thing about this app is that it transfers files without also dumping a copy of every file in My Drive
- (2016-08-03) Michael Guber: Doesn't transfer ownership to files in folders
- (2016-01-18) Does an excellent job of transferring ownership. Requires a bit of trial an error with regard to getting the files in the right place. WELL DONE! Thanks.
