- (2021-03-30) Rahul Mahawar: Nice App.
- (2021-02-05) Ender's Basement: This is the writer in HISTORY
- (2020-10-07) Imran Niloy: So far so great. Can we have a simple calmlywriter app for mobile? And a new tab page launch for calmly writer. Thanks. Keep it high.
- (2020-09-19) Carly: Great app! So I've been looking at the reviews and some have been saying that it used to cost $5, and I was wondering if there was still some way to support the developers? I absolutely love the app, and have recommended it to several friends, and I just wanted to support you all! Thanks in advance!
- (2020-02-20) Tom Meitner: I loved this app... until I tried exporting documents to DOCX. Any italicized text was removed. Several paragraphs at the end of the documents were removed. Extra line breaks were added all over the place. I don't know what the deal is, but this makes it unusable. I need to be able to get the docs out of Calmly and into something else. I'll have to look elsewhere.
- (2020-01-03) Tainan Felipe: I loved this app, but I'm not ablt to buy it, the button is disabled, and have an annoying notification on left-bottom telling to buy it to remove it.
- (2019-12-23) Bria Sativa Aguayo: It took a while for it to grow on me. There were some kinks to work out. It's not perfect but I love it now. I have to save in docx to be able to use it. I use Google Docs so I have a Calmly text file that I can only open with the app, a docx file, and a gdoc file for each entry. I tend to do a journal every day so you can imagine the number of files that creates. But I love the simplicity and even love the typewriter sounds. I hope at some point there is a less complicated way to save files. Thank you.
- (2019-12-03) Zach: For some reason, the scrolling is lagged whenever I use the 2 finger scroll on my touchpad. But everything else is perfect.
- (2019-11-05) Katie Ball: Love the app, lately (the past few months) I've been unable to launch it. The app will open, as in I can see the icon in the task bar, but I'm unable to pull up the actual page. I love the app though, and would love to be able to use it again.
- (2019-05-06) Cody: This is a beautiful writing application, worth more than the $5 that is charged for it.
- (2019-02-09) Kevin Aitken-Smith: This isn't an all singing, all dancing word processor app. It won't replace Word or Docs, it's simply designed to encourage you to get writing. And in that it succeeds. UI is simple, clean and easy to master. In Dark mode the menu options are nicely muted in a very faint grey, meaning that all you can see clearly is your text. Use the full screen option to totally eliminate distractions and the typewriter sounds option is the perfect white noise to aid concentration (at least it is for me). If what you want is a tool to enable you to focus on nothing but writing then this will work for you beautifully
- (2019-02-08) Chris Davis: It's a decent app, but it deserves one start because of the $5 price. Very basic. There are free apps that do the same and more. Also this app appears to be abandoned. Hasn't been updated in almost 2 years. I recommend trying Wavemaker. It's free, has way more features, and is actively being developed.
- (2018-09-06) Princess: Perfect for my needs. Absolutely *impeccable* autosave. My laptop's hard drive had to be formatted recently, and I thought Calmly Writer wouldn't have saved a lot of my writing because it's been a while since I last opened it, but no---all saved! I also love the dark mode and typewriter sound. Keep it up, devs! :)
- (2018-06-06) Oscar Zabala: Most tasteful and useful non-distraction & full-screen writing tool I've found out there. Needs nothing added. Does exactly what it promises and nothing more. Perfect.
- (2018-01-25) Bob Schwabach: need more screen and text color selections. how about green on black, like the old monochrome monitors. menu selections very skimpy. price not important. I don't mind paying when it's done well.
- (2017-12-04) M.H. Abdul-Rahim: A lot of writing apps I've tried required an online connection. Clamly Writer didn't. Spent a month using this on my Chromebook, writing during my commutes to and from work. It did what I needed, and it saves files locally as HTML, allowing me to "post-process" my work later if I needed. Glad to purchase and support development of this app.
- (2017-11-16) Jaka Santana: It's minimal, easy to use, and all feature is really suite for me as a blogger. For advanced writing, maybe you should using another apps.
- (2017-10-20) Jesse Costales: Like it a lot but, I which it was more configurable.
- (2017-10-01) Mario Burgard: It would have been the perfect tool, for distraction free writing and mark up. Here is why it isn't: The export of documents in any format is broken. I use a Chromebook. Calmly Writer exports always in html-file code. No matter, what I choose: markup, plaintext, docx. That's very sad for me. Calmly Writer is the onle truly distraction free tool on Chrome Webstore. All the other tools, don't understand, what that means. You see word counts, and scrollbars. Hopefully Google will put a button for fullscreen distraction free writing to Google Docs. Or maybe the developers from Calmly Writer will update this issue. I only give one star, because of this problem and my hope, the developers will recognize it and fix this problem. If so, I'll get back here and change my review.
- (2017-07-02) Paul Thompson: Needs a First Line Indentation feature which is almost an essential requirement of an editor for fiction writing. If it had that, I would purchase it but, sadly...
- (2017-06-07) Brett Jacobs: Clean, simple, awesome!
- (2017-05-18) Michael Cummings: GREAT APP. Just, you know, saving isn't working, so don't actually do work in it. It doesn't matter if I'm online or offline - I get the green "SAVING" in the upper right corner, but nothing is actually saved. I have again lost most of a morning's work that I now need to go recreate. It is a beautiful app, great markdown support, just a shame it doesn't function as anything more than a blackhole for your words.
- (2017-05-17) ChaChanna Simpson: I used to love this app. I bought it but now it's not syncing like it used to. I write at home and write at work and it used to sync and save. Now, it does not do that at all, and I can't get the Google Drive files to open in Calmly either. This is such a perfect, basic software. I hope this is resolved soon.
- (2017-03-21) Ryan Hughes: This used to be my favorite writing app when I was only using one computer, but now I have a home and word computer to sync between, and it just doesn't sync fully. I'll write something on my home computer, and then when I access the cloud file, still in the program, from my work computer, some changes I made would appear, but others would not. When I save files to my computer, I am unable to open them, even with the Calmly program. Also, occasionally I'll hit CTRL+Z to undo something, and it will delete the entire paragraph I was working within. CTRL+Y to redo the change does not bring the content back, and it will either be lost, or I will have to retrieve it from a previous version I might have luckily saved elsewhere. Overall, the app is inexpensive, beautiful, and generally easy to work with.
- (2017-02-28) Brendan Hutchinson: PLEASE bring back backups, loved being able to quickly make notes and have it saved in backups, now have to save every note TWICE to start a new one, and it SUCKS. Great app.
- (2017-02-27) Jordan Gray: I thought this would "take over" automatically once I began writing at anytime (such as this review), but it's a dedicated writer. However it does disable any menu bar and requires 'ESC' to exit and see anything else; practical in aiding focus.
- (2017-02-14) Hussein Horack: The best "distraction free" writer. It's perfect. Certainly worth supporting the makers. Distraction free, yet has all the features most would want. Just bought the pro version. Awesome app :) EDIT: I would appreciate the option to have a spellchecker or allow Grammarly to work alongside this app.
- (2017-02-14) Fawkes: This would be the BEST word processor for ChromeOS if it worked better offline. I've tried to save my work, but the files disappear. I've taken to copying what I've written and pasting it into Google Docs, which is tedious. I'd much rather just do everything through this. I also wish that the settings would be saved for the next time I opened it -- for example, already being in Dark Mode and Focus Mode instead of my having to recheck those options. I absolutely love writing in this. Huge pluses to me are the smart quotes and emdashes (I'm an author). Very few Chrome apps and online writing apps have those features, and they are very important to me. Aesthetically, this is an extremely pleasing app. It just needs its functionality fine-tuned.
- (2017-02-05) norman cho: I bought this specifically for offline use. It doesn't do that. Files saved as 'Calmly' files disappear and I am unable to locate them. I have also tried saving them as Markdown Files and Word files. These too disappear. The app looks nice. I enjoy using it and the typewriter sounds help me get into the zone. But that's not the reason why I bought it. I bought it to write offline and this is not happening. Can we get this fixed please.
- (2017-01-11) Mateus Cavanholi: Not the best, far from be the worst. It's simple, it has typewriting sounds (a plus here) but the focus mode is annoying, same problem with iaWriter: it greys out the sentence I'm not working, which is distracting when I want to quick review what was written before. iaWriter, for desktop, has a typewriter mode, text in the centre of the screen (like focus mode), but no changes in font colour. But it doesn't have the same option for chrome. So, for now, I'm sticking to this app, at least, it has the typewriter sound.
- (2016-12-16) A M: Simple and clutter-free. Gets out of the way of your writing. Great for first drafts. I wish there were more font choices and some more customization options for the text format. I can't find a way to upgrade and the ever-present notice at the bottom-right corner asking me to upgrade is distracting.
- (2016-11-30) Lindley Walter-Smith: Really nice distraction free editor, with some welcome features: focus mode, night mode, dyslexic mode, typewriter sounds, ability to save in html, markdown, .docx or plan text, spelling/grammar and smart punctuation and visible word count that can be easily turned on and off. If you're looking for a simple, beautiful app to focus on the writing, I strongly recommend this. It's a pleasure to write with. ETA just won NanoWriMo on it, using two machines and cloud save. I can safely say this is my favourite app to draft in, ever.
- (2016-11-26) Caleb Sun: Good but on the free version, the notice covers the word count please move one of them, preferably the notice.
- (2016-11-03) Fps Man: Definitely one of the most elegant apps. Move outta the way Ping-Pong Pop, go die in a hole solitaire. Thanks for the creation mate. Very nice indeed. So maybe add more options. Something along the lines of importing fonts and other stuff. Would like to see TF2 Build Font in this. Pretty cool and a very nice. Better then that engie man uncool dan.
- (2016-11-01) Earth Love Skin: Love the app but the downside was saving to MS Word, it's quite buggy.
- (2016-10-27) River Shreve: I love this app I am using a chromebook and there were no bugs, Daniel Coleman. I love to write on it, This app is good enough to write a novel with.
- (2016-10-25) Daniela Jiménez: I really love the sound and the dark mode,is the best writer ^^
- (2016-10-19) dan: I use Calmly Writer each time I have to write something and have to stay focused on it, it's awesome - especially the night mode. Thanks a lot !
- (2016-09-24) Sandro Filice: !!! TOP APP !!!
- (2016-09-23) Robert Marsh Sr: Good stuff
- (2016-09-08) Rachel Dutton: I really love this program. I know it's silly, but the typewriter sound makes it so much more satisfying to bang out those words! One option I'd really love to see is the ability to turn off the spell-check underlining. It's nice to just get the writing done, and then go back for editing, and the spellcheck is distracting. Thanks for the great app!
- (2016-09-06) Steffen Mutter: Would be nice if I could pay for this tool. Paypal does not work and I hate credit cards, I will never use one (again)...
- (2016-09-04) Dumadidak (Dumadidak): Clarity, simplicity, well designed UI, cloud backup. Excellent tool for working with texts. I found only one bug in online version - there is problem with ąęłź (polish letters):) But main version works fine and it is truly helpful!
- (2016-08-19) Auditiyo Das Gupta: This is by far one of the best distraction free apps I have used. Infact, I'm an avid Firefox user and brought Google Chrome back JUST so I could use this. I recommend 3 settings to get the most out of it: 1) Turn on Dark Mode 2) Turn on Focus Mode 3) Turn on Typrwriter Sounds Optional 4) Use a serif font This helped me skyrocket my creative and free writing :) Hope it helps you.
- (2016-08-17) Cynthia: I'm disappointed in this application, nobody helped me with my issue. I lost all my files, and there were no way I could have them again. The developers don't answer and they left you with no solution.
- (2016-08-10) Johan Dahlgren: Now that you can load and save directly from and to Google Drive I love this app! It's the best writing environment I've found so far, and it works perfectly. I only miss two minor things: 1. The ability to work with several documents at once, using tabs for example. 2. Automatic checking if a file has been updated on disc and then updating the currently open document. Caret does this, and it's a lifesaver for people like me who work on the same text from different computers and sometimes forget to reload the document before writing and saving, which has lost me text a couple of times. Minor gripes for an otherwise excellent application. Good stuff!
- (2016-08-02) Daniel Coleman: Updated review: I'm using a Chromebook, so the app has been buggy, but overall it is very good. At first I tried using the auto-sync feature but found it didn't work well (and saw comments from the developer about it). That's fine: I decided to save my work as an html file in Dropbox instead. That worked well for a few weeks, until one day I opened up my file to discover that either it hadn't saved my changes the previous day or Dropbox failed to sync. Couldn't find the missing work in the backup directory. It was just gone. This has happened again three more times in the past couple of months, and I've probably lost 4 hours of work. Sometimes I will write a test paragraph, save, close the app, and reopen it to discover that the paragraph is gone. I want to like this app so much, because it's basically perfect except for this crucial flaw. Very frustrating. I use my Chromebook to write, and unless I email myself the text at the end of every session I don't know what else I can do. Auto-sync doesn't work, and apparently it's not successfully saving changes to a file on my device's hard drive. If you aren't going to use a Chromebook, this is a 5-star app. If you are, be very careful with your content to make sure you keep it. Saving manually to Google Drive has worked for me.
- (2016-07-28) Hugo MIR: Awesome
- (2016-07-26) Danny Robey: The app has a great feel, but there are some formatting issues that drive me crazy. When importing from Google Docs, line spacing does not match the line spacing of text written in Calmly. And since there is ability to adjust spacing in Calmly,I have to deal with a document that has terribly inconsistent line spacing.
- (2016-07-08) Cha S: I like this app that's why I upgraded to have the other features like Auto-save. But it doesn't automatically save my work. It did save it in the back-up, which it already does in the free version of the app. I was hoping that if I upgraded, it will automatically save my work in my Drive, just like what Google Docs does. I am using a Chromebook. I'm not sure if this issue is just exclusive for Chromebooks as I read another review like this. I hope you can fix it! Still a good app, though.
