✔ We built a Chrome extension that auto generates meaningful filenames for new downloads. It has tailored formats for major file types like papers, books, financial reports, etc. For example,
- a paper's format = download date - title - first author's last name - area, so the filename would be 20250208 - Attention Is All You Need - Vaswani - LLM instead of 1706.03762 from arXiv
- an SEC filing's format = company - filing type - report period, so the file name would be Apple - IPO Prospectus - 19940126 instead of 29ef375c-56c2-48b9-917d-b12812efc1a4 (??!) from Apple's investor relations website
We are also developing a feature where users can add or adjust their file naming rules. For example, if you like underscores and download meeting memos a lot, you can add meeting memos = interviewee's name_company_position_topic_date.
📌 User Guide
- Sign in and then turn on the switch. You are good to go!
- Note, Cantrips.ai hasn't supported some websites like downloads from GitHub due to technical complications. It hasn't supported images, either. We are also considering applying a similar approach to other knowledge management tools like website bookmarks or folders. Let us know your experience with the extension and what features you'd like to see!
🥳 Why the extension?
- My desktop is buried with meaningless and odd filenames... Can't really figure out which file is the one I need.
- More importantly, I want my desktop/finder to look tidy. It feels great when everything is organized, but I don't want to handle renaming files in the mid of my research (and I become a bit lazy later). Hence we built a tool to auto rename files for us.

- (2025-01-23) Annie Lin: Literally saved my life! no joke! I haven't seen my desktop to be this clean FOR YEARS
- (2025-01-13) Pyrrha Nikos: I often repeat downloading the same paper or report because I forgot which pdf was the one I wanted. There are hundreds of papers on my desktop, and I was just a bit lazy to rename them properly at the time. Becomes a nightmare lol. Tried the extension a few days, and it works quite seamlessly. Like the automation, and the file renaming is consistent most of the time ^
- (2025-01-13) Charlie Z: Really helps me a lot as an e-commerce owner. The renaming feature is consistant so I don't have to name by myself on all the downloaded invoices/product descriptions/pricing lists. Hope there will be more preference settings coming up
