MetaMask is an extension for accessing Ethereum enabled distributed applications, or "Dapps" in your browser!
The extension injects the Ethereum web3 API into every website's javascript context, so that dapps can read from the blockchain.
MetaMask also lets the user create and manage their own identities (via private keys, local client wallet and hardware wallets like Trezor™), so when a Dapp wants to perform a transaction and write to the blockchain, the user gets a secure interface to review the transaction, before approving or rejecting it.
Because it adds functionality to the normal browser context, MetaMask requires the permission to read and write to any webpage. You can always "view the source" of MetaMask the way you do any Chrome extension, or view the source code on Github:

- I've relied on MetaMask for years, but the quality of the extension has fallen off a cliff in recent months. It has gone from my go-to wallet to one I actively avoid. The core problems are simple: it's unreliable and incredibly slow. Connecting to different networks is a constant battle, even with correct and updated RPCs. Simple actions take an eternity to process, if they don't fail outright. The extension feels buggy and unstable, which is the last thing you want from a crypto wallet. I use over a dozen other wallets that work perfectly under the same conditions. The persistent failures are unique to MetaMask. It's a shame to see such a foundational tool become so unusable. I have moved my primary activities to more reliable alternatives. I hope the team can restore its former quality.

- Forced re-haul of the GUI with no way to use the old one. There's nothing like taking things that used to be one button click and adding 2 more clicks for absolutely no reason. I also have a bug where importing a wallet using a private key, creates a un-removeable wallet that's also named the private key. Lord. UPDATED 8-27-25 They somehow managed to waste even more of our time. Now they make selecting your chain 10x worse, more clicks, they also make it so when you hit "View on BSCScan\Poly\Arbi" It takes you to ETHScan for literally no good reason with no option to opt out. It's just more time wasters with no benefit.

- After the new update import token doesn't work properly, tried many times. I even tried with multi-different accounts(All chrome browsers), for most the token doesn't import, yet for some it shows imported but the token could not be seen in the token-list even after clicking the refresh button.

- I love the wallet. But for almost a year now I have problems with basic transactions like sending ETH from one wallet to another on Arbitrum!!!! On Gnosis chain or some other chain that uses different gas token it will read the wrong value for gas token and will not let me confirm transaction because insufficient gas... So I have to use other wallet apps. It is sad that basic wallet functions do not work why do the try to monetize on swaps while basic functionality does not work!!

- Poor dev support. Marks contracts and websites as malicious out of pure laziness since a support team or a proper verification process is non existent. Blames Blockaid when no such flags appear on a competitor wallet and they use Blockaid as well. Detrimental to web3 development. One day you will be nothing for being such a torn in the side of progress and I will cherish it before I forget you ever existed.
