Please note that, while your highlights and annotations are always saved in the sidebar and dashboard, if the website URL for some reason changes, then the visual rendering of your highlights are not visible unless you update the URL in the "Edit Source" functionality on the dashboard. ➤ You can 1) highlight local PDFs directly from your computer. 2) Online PDFs, and 3) upload PDFs directly to Weava. Uploading PDFs will ensure you the smoothest experience. ➤ You are currently unable to directly highlight on PDFs inside certain 3rd party software, such as in Google Classroom, Blackboard and Canvas. Instead you would need to first download the PDF and then use it with Weava. We hope to have better solutions towards this in the future. ★ CHROME EXTENSION PERMISSIONS EXPLAINED: Weava's requested permissions are needed for the tool to function properly. However, the exact phrases provided by Chrome for these permissions are misleading and make them sound more invasive than they actually are — and you will generally see the same exact warnings on practically all Chrome extensions. Here's a further breakdown of the required permissions to run Weava: ① "Read and change all your data on the website you visit" ➤ "Read": The Weava Chrome extension has passed all of Google’s automated and manual security checks and is safe to use. The extension reads the current URL of the page you make highlights on - and is also checking if you have existing highlights on this URL so that it can visually show these to you. That's it. ➤"Change": Weava needs to modify the website you are visiting in order to show you the Chrome extension highlighter pop-up on top of it. Weava also needs this permission to be able to change the text background color accordingly whenever you make a highlight. ② "Modify data you copy and paste." ➤ Weava needs this permission simply to create and save the highlights you are making. Without it we would just be a nice color tool but without the capabilities to save the exact content you highlighted and show this to you in the sidebar and dashboard. ③ Separately, in the Weava Chrome extension settings, you can enable "Allow access to file URLs" which gives Weava permission to read PDF local file paths so that you can highlight PDFs directly from local files on your computer. Similarly to highlights on websites, it ONLY reads the file path of the file you are highlighting on and it is only doing this in order to be able to save the highlight and to fetch and visually render these highlights on subsequent visits. Nowadays, people are more inclined to use bookmark/tab/window/session management software like Workona and others. Three years ago, I requested a simple feature: to treat a folder as a "bookmark" folder, allowing one to open all the links in it simultaneously. Such a straightforward enhancement would enable this software to double as a bookmark manager. However, it doesn't seem like that's going to happen.

The premium version adds some nice features but for a basic use the free version is more than enough. Absolutely try it if you're a student or a person who highlights their physical books!

Review from December 2020: I really like this add-on! It is a lifesaver when it comes to reading and highlighting key points from the scientific articles I read for my degree. Pros: ++ Reliably remembers highlights (I have had issues with other add-ons) + Folders and subfolders + Also works PDF files you open in browser (both local and web) + Overview of all the papers I have highlighted (and thus read) in a single glance Cons: - frequently struggles with logging in when Privacy Badger and uBlock are enabled - the premium is pricey for a student (but has extensive free functionality) - no Firefox add-on at the moment ;( - can't change the order of folders

More urgently, when I open the extension Home page my laptop fans start spinning very loudly and my whole laptop slows down! There is some MAJOR bug going on here. The extensions doesn't seem to be working right at all. Request to the developers: Please fix this extension. Roll it back to the older version if needed. It is a great and very useful extension when it works right. Oct 9, 2022, Update: It is Oct 1, 2023. Nearly one year later. This extension's problems have not been resolved, and have in fact increased! It's become glitchier, laggier, and more painful to use. Worst of all, it's performance makes my laptop's fans kick into overdrive and sound like engines! This is an extension that highlights text, what exactly is so intensive about that? Requesting an explanation from the devs on this.

    Hi, When one already has a highlight on text alone (non clickable link text), we can easily click on the highlight to quickly remove the highlight. HOWEVER, if you highly a clickable link text or a url, we can not quickly do the same (i.e. quickly remove the highlight). When clicking it goes to the link and we can not remove the highlight. We have to click the Weava dropdown and go find it and then remove it from the sidebar. This wastes a lot of time and also is a good bit annoying. Could you add like a new hotkey option so we can choose a hotkey to open up the little Weava tool box on the highlights or something so we can also quickly remove on clickable text or urls too? And, is the a workaround now somehow in Chrome where we can with a Chrome shortcut or Windows shortcut to disallow clicking on live links and when we click it would bring up the Weava tool box on clickable text and URLs that way or something?
