SECURITY ARCHITECTURE
PasswordOwl employs military-grade security standards:
▸ AES-256-GCM Encryption
The same encryption standard used by governments and financial institutions worldwide. Each piece of data is encrypted with a unique initialization vector.
▸ Argon2id Key Derivation
Winner of the Password Hashing Competition. We use aggressive parameters (64MB memory, 3 iterations) to make brute-force attacks computationally infeasible.
▸ Two-Secret Key Derivation (2SKD)
Your vault is protected by two secrets: your master password (memorized) and a unique Secret Key (stored on your devices). Both are required to decrypt your
vault. This means:
- If someone guesses your password, they still need your Secret Key
- If our servers are breached, attackers cannot derive your keys
- If someone steals your device, they still need your password
▸ OPAQUE Protocol
We use the OPAQUE protocol for authentication, a cutting-edge cryptographic protocol where your password is never transmitted to our servers, not even in hashed
form. The server authenticates you without ever learning your password.
▸ Local-Only Decryption
All encryption and decryption operations happen exclusively in your browser using the Web Crypto API. Your master password and vault key exist only in memory
and are never persisted to disk.

When you visit a website with a login form, PasswordOwl displays a subtle icon in the password field. Click it to see matching credentials from your vault.
Select one to autofill instantly.
When you submit a login form with new credentials, PasswordOwl offers to save them. One click adds them to your encrypted vault, ready for next time.

We request only the permissions necessary for the extension to function:
• Storage: Save your encrypted session and preferences locally
• Active Tab: Detect login forms on the current page
• Tabs: Update the extension badge with matching login count
• Scripting: Inject autofill functionality into web pages
• All URLs: Offer autofill on any website you visit
We never access or read page content beyond detecting login forms. We never transmit your browsing history or any unencrypted data.
