Image from store Auto Mute Tabs When Multiple Tabs Audible
Description from store This extension lets you control mute status of multiple tabs. Often while you're listening to something from one tab, another tab starts to make sound. This can be annoying. So this extension will automatically mute the previous tab that was making sound. It works like a stack - think a stack of cards, only the one on top is visible - similarly, only the last tab that's making sound will be allowed to stay unmuted. Once the current audible tab stops making any sounds, the previous tab will be unmuted again. There are a few keyboard shortcuts you can use: Cmd+Shift+0 -> Mute all tabs. Cmd+Shift+8 -> Mute or unmute the current tab. Cmd+Shift+9 -> Unmute all tabs (although, if you have multiple audible tabs, only one will remain unmuted, rest will be muted by extension.) Any tabs you mute with these shortcuts will not be unmuted by the extension. You have to unmute that tab with one of the shortcuts. Added an Easter Egg feature - press Cmd+Shift+O to try it. It's not very relevant to this extension, but I don't want to create a new extension just for this functionality which I need.

  • (2024-09-04) HansTheHuman: Exactly what I wanted! Just a couple of minor issues/bugs, however... -I need to toggle the extension everytime I restart Chrome/Windows to get it working again. -Keyboard shortcuts don't seem to work on Windows as it doesn't have the cmd key. Ctrl doesn't work either. EDIT - Reply: The toggle I mentioned refers to enabling/disabling the extension itself. What I found was, whenever Chrome/Windows is closed/shutdown, the extension has to be disabled then re-enabled in order to work upon starting up Chrome again. My guess is that you are unable to reproduce this issue, as I reckon something like this would've been pretty obvious. Unfortunate, but thanks for checking. Another thing I thought of is a priority/whitelist where certain tabs/sites remain unmuted at all times. Thank you also for directing me to the shortcuts page.
  • (2024-08-23) Sean Craig: Lat updated in 2015, yet is the best and only extension that auotmaitically mutes/unmutes as sound starts/stops on most recent tab. What this does that other don't is unmutes the most recent tab when you pause or mute the current tab. This is nice, because when you're done for example watching a tutorial video in current tab, the most recent background tab (maybe your music) unmutes when you're done with the tutorial. Back to tunes. No need to go unmute your music manually.

  • (2023-07-09) Mark Barnes: Would be even better if, when I switch to a tab that is NOT playing audio, that it muted the tab that WAS playing audio. When I switch to a tab that is not playing audio, I don't want to hear anything. Like "Mute all inactive tabs" works in Firefox. Thanks,

  • (2020-07-21) M P: for a tab to become new, it has to be reloaded or the old "new" closed, which isnt always desired. Also, it would make a lot more sense to pause the inactive stream(s).

  • (2017-06-11) Matt: Hi there, I think this extension is great! I'd like it if the audio focus followed the active tab though, rather than the newest one playing audio. Also, could you lower the check interval a little bit, maybe to once a second instead of every three? Thanks!
