Compute estimates right from Workflowy! {openSource}
Want to compute estimates right from Workflowy? Or just sum up some stuff in a workflowy page?
This is your tool.
**How does it work?**
Any line that starts with a number formatted like this will be consider a price (or price range):
$100
$200..400
Then, for any line that contains a triple dollar sign ($$$), the plugin will show the sum of all price (or a range) based on all of its visible children.
**Note on ranges:**
If you sum a lot of ranges, say 10 items from $50..100, you will notice that the total range reported by the application isn't $750 +/ $250 but $750 +/- $100
This is because the estimator doesn't consider your $50..$100 range to be a "flat probability". In other terms, it's more likely to be around the center of the interval than it is to be at the limits. To achieve that, it creates a so-called "bell curve" centered at $75. It then returns an interval at 95% confidence which is smaller (and more accurate) that doing a simple sum of intervals.

- (2019-01-26) Robert Reding: I use Estimator two ways. Under BACKLOG, I keep an ordered list of home projects to complete such as paint the deck, buy living room carpeting, etc. For each item I estimate the cost. As I add and remove items and change estimates, I see a total cost of future repairs and enhancements. For long duration tasks, I create subtasks with hour or day estimates. I can quickly compute remaining effort as subtasks I overlooked are added or existing subtasks are completed. Although the hours or days show as $, I'm so happy I don't have to repeatedly do the math that I don't care about the formatting. An added feature I did not glean from the Overview, is that Estimator rolls sums up the hierarchy, i.e., total, subtotal, subsubtotal. This saves me a lot of time. While Estimator is no substitute for a full blown estimation tool, it's a great add on for a Workflowly level of estimation for tasks that arise quickly and are completed quickly.
