When you're off campus, you can still access academic literature via the University library's proxy server, but it's a pain to go via the Library website, or to manually type in the proxy server address.
This makes it so you just hit the button when you are looking at a "Pay $50 to read this article" button. You'll get the chance to log in to the proxy server if you aren't already (that depends on your browser's cookie settings), and if the library has a subscription to the website, you'll be good to go.
