Tune is a Chrome extension that helps people control the volume of the conversation they see.

Image from store Tune (experimental)
Description from store Tune is an experimental Chrome extension from Jigsaw that lets people customize how much toxicity they want to see in comments across the internet. Tune builds on the same machine learning models that power Perspective (https://www.perspectiveapi.com) to let people set the “volume” of conversations on a number of popular platforms, including YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, and Disqus. Tune lets you turn the volume of toxic comments down for “zen mode” to skip comments completely, or turn it up to see everything—even the mean stuff. Or you can set the volume somewhere in between to customize the level of toxicity (e.g. attacks, insults, profanity, etc) you’re willing to see in comments. The machine learning powering Tune is experimental. It still misses some toxic comments and incorrectly hides some non-toxic comments. We’re constantly working to improve the underlying technology, and users can easily give feedback right in the tool to help us improve our algorithms. Tune isn’t meant to be a solution for direct targets of harassment (for whom seeing direct threats can be vital for their safety), nor is Tune a solution for all toxicity. Rather, it’s an experiment to show people how machine learning technology can create new ways to empower people as they read discussions online. Tune is part of the Conversation-AI research project (https://conversationai.github.io/) and is completely open source, so you can learn more, explore the code, or contribute directly on github (https://github.com/conversationai/perspective-viewership-extension). The extension currently works on English language comments only. All non-English comments will be shown above and hidden below a pre-defined threshold. FAQs Q: Are the comments I read being associated with my account or saved by Tune? A: No. Comment text is sent to Perspective API for scoring then is automatically deleted after the score is returned. The initial sign-in for Tune is used to provide access to Perspective API. Q: What data is stored when I submit my feedback or corrections through Tune? A: If you submit feedback via clicking About>Feedback, the Google feedback report will contain the user id of the account you are signed into with Chrome at that time. Separately, if you submit a correction to how a comment is scored (i.e. answering “Should this be hidden? Yes /No”) the text of the comment and your answer is stored for future training, but the submission is not linked to your user ID.

  • (2022-02-25) Hocine B: I started using twitter and often tried to stay away from it for the anxiety the comments gave me. Then I thought that an extension should exist to solve this problem. This is the first time I go on twitter and my browsing experience is more pleasant, thanks Google :)
  • (2020-10-30) Yuki Ito (よね): Not work on Twitter anymore? I set as "Hide Everything" but no changes.
  • (2020-07-28) Gopal Othayoth: "Sign in with Google" button and "Tune" button at the top do nothing. Would have liked to try this out, but I can't log in.
  • (2020-02-09) Shafiq Zulkafri: I wish to hide twitter replies if i were to hide everything. Not literally every tweet. Hopefully this improves
  • (2020-01-22) Hakase: This worked fine before, but I've switched to Brave Browser and can't click on the login button. Is this intentional?
  • (2019-07-05) Ryan: PERFEITO NUNCA MAIS PESSOAS TOXICAS COMENTANDO INUTILIDADES! AJUDA MUITO... ADICIONEM O IDIOMA PORTUGUÊS QUANDO A VERSÃO ORIGINAL FOR CONCLUÍDA. PERFECT NEVER MORE TOXIC PEOPLE COMMENTING INUTILITIES! HELP VERY ... ADD THE PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE WHEN THE ORIGINAL VERSION IS COMPLETED.
  • (2019-05-19) diss identity: This is the equivalent of hiring somebody to stick their fingers in your ears and shout "LALALALALALA" in your stead. It's been more than 2 years Google started experimenting with Perspective AI, I thought it would have some progress. Alas. I tested it on Twitter, Youtube and Reddit. No matter how I set the dial, it either hides too much or too little, but never consistently. More importantly, however, the benefit of this extension is not clear to me, because all 5 platforms this extension supports have builtin upvoting mechanisms and 3 of them have downvoting mechanisms as well. So all this extension can do is to either ignore the net voting results altogether or come up with some extremely untransparent and inconsistent rules trying to combine the popularity vote with the toxicity score; it seems to do the former, i.e. ignore. On Reddit for example, even a reply with 5-10K upvotes and gold is hidden because it says "poopoo". But here comes the absolute show-stopper: It doesn't support multi-languages, e.g. German. What good is this extension if it categorically hides (or shows) everything it doesn't recognize?
  • (2019-04-30) Christopher Lowery: I like the idea and hope that it actually gets finished and made good at some point, but as it literally isn't doing anything at all for me at this point (turning it all the way down to Hide It All still doesn't hide a single comment on Facebook), it's useless to me.
  • (2019-04-11) David Michaud: Excellent plugin. Very damning that the services it targets are too lazy to implement features such as these natively. Things I hope to see as this experiment progresses: - night / dark mode support - ability to flag comments which should have been filtered, and why - a hotkey + mousewheel to turn the "volume level" up and down instead of accessing the plugin from the shelf
  • (2019-04-03) Virtue Evans: Unfortunately, it seems to identify content as "toxic" simply due to word choice, irrelevant to its context. Specifically, I stated that I was "thankful we have fewer idiots nowadays" and despite being on Keep It Loud, it collapsed my barely offensive statement, despite the fact that it was my own tweet. It could be great, but unfortunately, it's just too hung up on word choice and ignores context too much. And, if your goal is to collapse toxic comments, you're kinda going about it the exact opposite way that you'd need to. Contextual use of words and phrases is the issue, not the words themselves.
  • (2019-03-27) David Richter: Fails to log in.
  • (2019-03-24) Ada Filinovich: I appreciate the effort, and I can't wait until this leaves experimental versions and becomes more convenient, but it doesn't support dark mode as of yet which makes it useless on the forums I would use it the most.
  • (2019-03-20) Eman Laerton: Finally, the app every SJW and NPC has been waiting for. So since this exists now, Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc. y'all shouldn't censor people on your respective platforms... Right?
  • (2019-03-16) Max le Fou (ButtBadger): So experimental, it doesn't even work... It asks me to sign in with Google. But when I click the button, nothing happens...
  • (2019-03-16) simon emilio garrido rivas: por lo general,me ha servido para sacar de mi navegador muchos intrusos,,gracias
  • (2019-03-16) 50/50 so far... but there's room for improvement... i'll give it time.
  • (2019-03-15) Bruno Graça: It doesn't work in portuguese.
  • (2019-03-14) Iftieaq Murshed: Although this extension doesn't work that well but it's expected as detecting toxic conversation is not an easy task and it's just a beta version. I am giving five star just to appreciate the effort.
  • (2019-03-13) Julien Reszka: It works fine in English Not sure it works in French tho
  • (2019-03-13) Sir Bughunter: It doesn't work at all in Brave Browser. Please add support for it. And it really has problems to identify hate comments. Instead, it blocks out many other non-toxic comments. Also, YouTube's Dark Mode it makes every comment you hover over with a mouse light up in white. That's very annoying. And I don't understand why it does that, but not on any other site...

  • (2019-03-14, v:0.2.5 experimental) Pam Pierce: Google Tune does it also block bad reviews of products?
I am concerned that it will block negative reviews of products. I want to see thoughtful negative information about products, I just want it to be done respectfully. Will Google Tune allow respectful negative comments? If so what level should it be set at to allow this? If you don't allow respectful negative comments then please add this feature so I can filter out the disrespectful comments.
  • (2018-11-24, v:0.1.6 beta-testing) Michael O'Neill: Not compatible with YouTube's Dark Mode
The extension is highlighting all YouTube comments in white. This is probably fine except when the user has dark mode activated. I'm seeing an enormous white box that blanks out the comment text (also in white).
