Highlighting the need for diverse voices in journalism by literally highlighting diverse voices in journalism.
Full Frontal Presents: The News in Color! calculates the percentage of articles written by people of color (POC) that appear on the homepages of ten notable publications: The LA Times, The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN, Huffington Post, The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today and The Guardian. If you think we don’t need this extension, download it and see for yourself. Much like my hips, these numbers do not lie.
When you visit one of these sites, the articles written by POC are highlighted in pink, because the best way to highlight an issue is to...highlight it.
When you open a new Chrome tab, you'll see a ranking of news organizations based on the percentage of homepage articles written by POC, a feed of the most recent articles viewed by other readers, and the game “Snake” for when you don't feel like reading the news because it is too damn depressing.
The extension is is littered with all kinds of easter eggs. But we’re not finding them for you, because the point is for you to find things — like a new appreciation for the need for diversity in journalism!
