Checking US visa slot availability has been a hurdle to millions of Indians every year for multiple reasons
1. Lack of slots availability
2. Locking out for 72 hours if the portal *thinks* the user is a bot

Remember that visa slot drops usually happen at night US time (I got mine at around 4:30 AM pacific - slots drop had started from 3 AM), so have ways to wake youself up when the notification emails come through. All in all, definitely consider the paid option which sends emails based on your location/date needs.
