• (2023-06-06) Annette Griffin: This is a brilliant resource! I started using School Report Writer last year, having resisted for nearly 30 years any kind of comment bank or similar resource. Instead of resulting in bland, repetitive reports (as I had feared), I think it's improved them: the 'basics' - 'X has had a .... term in Subject', 'X's result of x/50, which accounts for 20% of the final examination mark....', etc, etc - are generated in seconds, which means nothing vital is omitted, and you have much more time to consider the finer details - the meaningful feedback and specific targets which parents actually want. They don't care if every child's report begins 'X has worked ... in lessons this year', as long as the details are student-specific. The fact that he/she/they, etc, is automatically generated avoids the potential errors in copy/paste reports, and the drop-down menus you can create allow for a wide range of pre-written feedback to be given throughout a report. The option to add '#?' to a sentence, so you can add your own text as you produce each report, is really helpful, too. Obviously, SRW takes a little time to set up initially, but it is intuitive and easy to navigate, and you can make reports as simple or complex as you like - and you'll save hours in the long run! There are plenty of suggested or 'model' sentences and so on, which is great if you're starting out, but as you continue to add to the comments and drop-down menus, you can adapt or use existing ones, which means the process gets quicker and quicker. School Report Writer is so good, I can't believe it's free!

• (2023-05-30) Miguel Robertson: Fantastic service. Most schools provide a comment bank as part of their grading database system. However, they are often limited in options and difficult to use. School report writer on the other hand gives you many more options and lets you proofread and update comment banks on the fly. Going in and making individual reports more specific and personal is also a breeze. I was introduced to it nearly 10 years ago during my first teaching rounds, and the comment banks I created then are still there connected to my account and accessible. I have taught at several schools since and always go back to school report writer.

It takes a bit of time to set-up, especially getting your comment bank and order ready, but once that is done, each individual comment is done in no time at all. • (2022-08-14) Craig Tyson: Fab piece of software! Don't be put off by the fact that it doesn't look like software that you are used to. The screen might look busy but it is very functional and just works! You do not need to be an IT person to use it by any stretch of the imagination. Just following the guidance and you can rattle off personalised reports in minutes. Take the time to set up your comment banks and it will pay you back in spades. I added on some from other people but edited and deleted a lot to make them my own, then as I wrote my reports, found that I needed to make extra comments that I added to it and saved and over time I have been able to create banks that work for me and now can rattle off a full class very quickly. Linden is great to discuss the software with too, so helpful. This is so much better than any so called 'professional' (paid for!) software out there.
• (2022-08-11) Christopher Valkenburg: Very helpful. Setting up stock answers takes time, which I don't have. It would be even better if the software had more of them. For example, in grammar: 'X has developed nicely in her understanding of subject/verb agreement', but with more variations. But not everyone teaches English grammar, and it's unreasonable to expect this. Maybe an add-on pack for different subjects would solve the problem.

• (2022-06-23) OdgeBrown: This tool is phenomenal. It takes an initial investment of time to set up, but once you have it is a breeze. I created my own comment banks from reports I had previously written, and also downloaded some from community to increase my banks even further. Names and pronouns are covered, synonyms are suggested to prevent overuse of adjectives, and the drop down menus save time on writing the same topic names repeatedly etc. I am dumfounded as to why this tool is not widely used and endorsed by schools (through CPD etc), it slashes workload and does not take away from the meaning and impact that reports should have. All the benefits, but in a fraction of the time. Every teacher's dream! Huge thank you to the developer(s).

The free comment bank is great, but I also added my own comments based on our current units and skills. It does take a bit of time to set up initally, but it's SO WORTH IT afterwards. AND, you can reuse many of those comments each quarter or the following year if you teach the same skills/units. I feel like I've life-hacked my comment writing, and I can never go back now!

When I used it for the first time I needed a very short period of time to learn how to use it. It is sooo easy to setup, edit, and use. Changing comments and adjusting is no problem at all. I can't recommend it highly enough.

It takes 20 mins to write a class worth of reports and I know that the students names will be correctly spelt, there will be no grammatical errors and now with support for gender neutral pronouns all bases are covered.
• (2022-05-12) JS Hong: As a teacher and ex-software developer, I tried to make a concerted effort to use this and almost managed to actually make some reports. There were several moments I was tempted to give-up but the final straw was when each time I tried to update and import the template, I had old comment sections come up every time. I couldn't find an easy way to delete these and and suspect they are saved on a server. If I import a new template, why do I still have leftovers from previously? Really the problem is poor design. Apart from the website resembling 1997, there is too much going-on on each page, confusing navigation (do I need to click on each tab?), loads of textboxes and buttons for something or other, and then the endless explanatory notes/hints/video links all over the place, plus superfluous colours, typefaces, font sizes, highlighting and more links. It looks like every time an email came in asking how to do something, the answer had to be added somewhere on the page. The process of making each report is still time-consuming to chose comment sections and drop downs. In the end I took my template and used Excel. A shame because other report writing sites are no better and lack features. If the site was professionally written using modern HTML5 in manner that makes template management and selecting comment sections and drop down lists easier, a yearly charge of $/€/£5 would be fine and users would roll in. I cannot use this, it takes longer than writing them individually.
