Description from store ReadBuddy: A Small Idea with a Big Impact Sometimes, the best ideas come by chance. ReadBuddy is one of them. When my daughter was diagnosed with dyslexia, we started reading more, hoping that extra practice would help. But reading became more of a frustration than a solution. The waiting time for a treatment plan was anywhere between six months and a year, making it feel like there was no immediate help available. It felt unfair that children who need support have to wait months before they can even get started. During this period, I wondered: why aren’t there simple, free tools that can make an immediate difference without hassle? The programmer in me couldn’t resist building something myself—not as a big project, but simply to help my daughter. That idea became ReadBuddy. A Simple Solution That Works ReadBuddy is a browser extension that converts website text into the OpenDyslexia font. This font is specially designed for people with dyslexia, with thicker bases on letters to make them visually more stable. Research shows that this can help improve reading by reducing letter flipping and distortion. ReadBuddy stands out because of its simplicity. With just one click in your browser, you can turn it on or off. No complicated settings—just a straightforward tool that instantly improves readability. Why Privacy Matters While developing ReadBuddy, I discovered that many existing tools collect data in the background about the websites you visit. That didn’t sit right with me. A reading aid should help people, not track them. That’s why ReadBuddy does not collect any data. Everything runs locally in your browser, with no external connections. The source code is public on GitHub, so everyone can see exactly how the tool works. No Waiting Lists, Just Help What affected me the most was how long children have to wait for support. My daughter had to wait almost a year before a treatment plan was available. I don’t understand why treatment organizations don’t provide a real “starter pack”—something that gives children immediate support while they wait for a place in a program. During that waiting period, children need tools that help maintain their confidence. With ReadBuddy, I want to show that you don’t have to wait to make a difference. Anyone can use this tool—no application, no cost, no waiting list. Technology can provide instant support, even if it’s just in a small way. A Call to Schools and Organizations ReadBuddy is not a cure for dyslexia—I know that. But it can provide extra support, especially for children who are still waiting for official help. That’s why I encourage schools, parents, and organizations to start using tools like this, even without a diagnosis. Every child deserves to read with confidence, no matter where they are on a waiting list. Download ReadBuddy ReadBuddy is available for free in the Edge Web Store and is easy to install. Technology is here to help—let’s use it to make a difference.
