I used to rely on "Tab Position Options," but unfortunately it doesn't follow modern best practices for Chrome extensions and seems outdated or buggy in recent versions. Big thanks to the new developer of "Tab Position Manager" — this extension is exactly what I’ve been needing! It solves the issue perfectly and works smoothly with current versions of Chrome. Really appreciate the effort in creating a clean and functional solution where others fell short. Keep up the great work!

  • (2025-05-07) idofbutcher idofbutcher: Bug Report for Tab Position Manager Issue Description: When using two windows, and there are more than two tabs open in the second window, closing that window causes the "Activate tab after active tab is closed" behavior to be applied to the remaining window. As a result, the active tab in the first window is unexpectedly switched. Steps to Reproduce: 1. Open two browser windows. 2. Ensure the second window has more than two tabs open. 3. Set the "Activate tab after active tab is closed" behavior in the settings. 4. Close the second window. 5. The "Activate tab after active tab is closed" behavior is incorrectly applied to the remaining window, causing the active tab in the first window to switch unexpectedly.
  • (2025-04-24) Iosif Gagyi Palffy: Works exactly like how I wanted and unlike other similar extensions it has a few extra options, which some will definitely appreciate. I tried a handful of others and ultimately I had to go with Tab Position Manager because new tabs opened from the same tab always open to the right of the original tab (so O, 3, 2, 1) not to the right of the one already opened (so O, 1, 2, 3, like in New Adjacent Tab). This should be a toggle in both extensions but it's not in either. UPDATE: As others have said this makes a mess of your Tab Groups, I had 7 tab groups holding ~600 tabs, now I have 2, 1 holding 1 tab and the other holding 599, so yeah, thanks but no thanks.
  • (2025-04-19) Glenn Z: It works but in MS Edge when you close and then re-open the browser, the tab groups are ungrouped.
  • (2025-03-26) Oleksandr: Thank you. Could you please add option for "Activate tab after active tab closed" = Order (in access order)?
  • (2025-03-23) Doppel: I believe this is the only extension with similar functionality that currently works properly. I have tried many extensions and the only others I have tried are those that do not support Manifest V3 or are buggy and do not work properly. This one works 100% correctly with no bugs. If possible, I would like to see more features so that I can configure more detailed settings. Correction: there was one problem. When the startup state is set to restore the previous tab, the order of the tabs is in reverse order of the previous state.

  • (2025-03-13) RJ Mari: So far it works perfectly for my setup, which is new tabs open to the right and closing tabs activates the tab immediately to the left. I was previously using Tab Positions Options, but it got removed due to the latest Chrome extension terms. I forgot just how terrible the default, uncustomizable, unintuitive tab positions are on this browser. Thanks for helping me fix it again.
