Make Chrome Text Black is a Google Chrome extension that lets you customise how text appears in your browser. Make text darker so you can read websites and email the way you want to.
** THIS EXTENSION HAS A 14 DAY FREE TRIAL AND REQUIRES A SUBSCRIPTION PURCHASE **
This extension works with Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Opera, and Brave.
No more grey text.
Are you sick of sites that put grey text against white backgrounds? You're not going blind, you're just suffering from a terrible design trend. You don't need to highlight text just to read it anymore. Change text to black with this extension.
No more tiny text.
Some websites look like they've been written for ants. You can zoom in on the page, but then it zooms in on all the pictures, buttons, icons and turns the page into a cluttered mess. Leave your magnifying glass behind, you can now change text size.
No more thin text.
Ever had to squint with your eyes two inches from the screen because of pencil thin text? All it does is give you is eye strain and headaches. You don't need to worry about this with Make Chrome Text Black. Make text bold and thicker.
No more weird fonts.
How about strange fonts that look closer to ancient symbols rather than letters? They might look cool in a web designer’s portfolio, but not when you’re trying to read them. You can now change the font to something sensible.

- (2025-07-08) Lamai Bottomley: My husband introduced me to this extension. it's so wonderful; it made my reading so much easier. It is good value for money; I recommend it for anyone who needs it.
- (2025-07-07) Danny Bino: Good deal, cheers for this!!
- (2025-07-06) Winney Wan: My dad loves this extension for reading news websites and Facebook. The text on these sites is usually way too light and hard to see, but this makes everything dark and easy to read. You don't have to mess around with settings it just works. We tried the free trial and could tell right away it was helping.
- (2025-07-06) Sam Antony: My grandfather has been using this extension for a while and find it really helpful for making text more readable. The free trial gave him plenty of time to decide if it's worth it. The convenience of having text automatically adjusted on every website is worth the small subscription fee. For me, I could actually trust that I wouldn't need to provide tech support all the time because this app just works. I don't mean to be rude but the complaints about paying money are crazy. Requiring card details upfront for trials is standard practice across the entire software industry. Literally every major subscription service operates this way. Are you going to tell me that Netflix is trying to scam elderly people too? Characterising this as "targeting absent-minded elderly people" is awful. It's standard practice because it helps prevents people from creating multiple accounts to abuse the free trial system. This extension works great, and you know that if you run into any issues you can just message the developer to ask for a fix. 🙂
- (2025-07-06) Jim Bottomley: This extension is a game-changer. I was constantly squinting at grey, thin, or tiny text on websites—especially on bright backgrounds. Make Chrome Text Black solved all of that instantly. Now I can read comfortably without highlighting text or zooming in awkwardly. The ability to customize font weight, size, and style is a huge bonus. It’s simple, effective, and does exactly what it promises. Highly recommend for anyone who values readability and eye comfort while browsing.
- (2025-07-06) A B: Love it, makes reading the pages alot easier.
- (2025-07-05) aaccaarree: yea, it's a cool concept BUT you shouldn't ask customers for their card detail before starting the trial or cannot test the product without giving out the card detail
- (2025-06-28) Alex McLean: I have had this extension for some years and used it where I could to make those skinny grey fonts more readable. It was user friendly and did what it said. However, Jarrad recently updated it to include a semibold option. This opened up a whole new world for me - it is now the most used tool in my computer. No more skinny grey fonts and no more ugly black bolds. I read a lot of newspapers and I'm yet to encounter a strange font that I can't easily make more readable. In spite of it's name, it works just as well on Edge. Give it a try.
- (2025-03-26) Mark Bennett: I'm glad I ignored the 2.8-star rating and tried this out. It's a huge and immediate quality-of-life improvement. People complaining that they have to pay for this are ridiculous. ("sOmE pEoPlE aCtUaLlY nEeD tHiS.) Socialism does not work. If you think this extension should be free, learn to code and write it yourself. Jarrad, if you're not asking actual users for reviews post two weeks, maybe you should be. (This would also remind "absent minded, elderly people who did not intend to continue after the 2 weeks were finished" to cancel; I would hope that's a positive for you.) Also, I don't see a link to your other extensions. Anything else I might need?
- (2025-01-01) Walker Talker: Asking money for... what?
- (2024-02-04) Joe Cheng: Great app, my older grandparents have poor vision and now are more confident on the computer :)
- (2024-01-12) Robert Crombie: I was prepared to trial this (2 weeks free), in spite of the fact that the developer is asking too much money for the purchase). HOWEVER he is insisting we GIVE OUR CARD DETAILS, at the beginning of the two eek trial. The only valid reason for that is - he gains extra funds from absent minded, elderly people who did not intend to continue after the 2 weeks were finished. I challenge anyone to tell me - why wouldn't it be ok for us to give card details when we finally decide to make the purchase (at end of two weeks).

- (2023-03-30) Warwick Keene: Hi - This is a great benefit to me, so leaving my positive review below but want to ask whether the darker text can be turned on for Google geneally? I use Windows 11 and that is clearly meant for eagles and hawks as the type is vanishing small and faint. I will pay a second fee to be able to darken everything. Please respond. Meanwhile for others, my review is below. highly recommended. I have been using this for some months and I could not read my daily onlife newspaper without it. It is well worth the few dollars it costs to be able to read again. I can chooce size and darkness of type - mostly. But when I open the Comments section to read readers' comments, that is in the light font the newspaper uses. Is there some way to make this darker, too? And is there a version I can install for Windows 11?

- (2023-02-09) Jessica S. (darkocean): Alright, I can edit this now! My old review was a bit harsh so it's deleted. Do note that this extension isn't free. I personally won't try anything without a free trial. I don't want to hurt the developer so 5 stars in hopes they consider changing things. I'm fine with banner ads in a freebie version. :)
- (2022-03-03) Tim Potts: I purchased this product for my wife to use on her Chromebook so that she could navigate easily. She has severe vision problems that can not be addressed with just the existing accessibility options available. The product was paid for and no email with a product key arrived. I went to the website to obtain the product key and after registering her and then searching for the purchase in every conceivable place, still no product key. An email was sent yet still no response. At this time I will have to either cancel the order and go to the trouble with PayPal to get a refund or just accept that I am out the $27 US dollars for this purchase.
