BG Remove — Remove image backgrounds locally
Short summary
- Remove image backgrounds directly in your browser. No uploads, no cloud.
- Fast on modern browsers and works offline after install.
- Draw a selection on the page or use the right‑click menu. Preview and export a transparent PNG.
Key features
- 100% local processing — your images never leave your device
- Works on most websites
- Two ways to start:
- Toolbar popup → Start selection
- Right‑click an image → context menu
- Live preview with a transparent checkerboard background
- Export as PNG with transparency
- Handles images outside the visible area
- Built‑in fallback for sites with stricter security rules
- Simple controls: Mask threshold, Softer edges, Reset
How to use
1) From the toolbar popup
- Click the extension icon → "Start selection"
- Drag a rectangle over the area you want to process
- Wait for the preview to appear
- Click "Download PNG" to save the result
2) From the page (context menu)
- Right‑click an image and choose:
- "Remove background & download" — processes that specific image and shows a preview; click "Download PNG" to save
- "Select area to remove background" — opens an overlay so you can draw a custom area
Settings (popup)
- Mask threshold (0–1): adjust edge softness/hardness
- Softer edges: reduces thin edge halos
- Reset: restore defaults
Compatibility
- Works best on modern browsers
- Runs entirely offline after installation
- Large images may take longer on older hardware
Privacy & permissions
- To work on the current page and show menus
- To save the PNG to your computer
- To remember your settings (threshold, edge option)
- The extension does not upload images or results to any server
Notes & behavior
- For images not visible on screen, the extension tries to fetch the image directly. If the site blocks this, it may briefly scroll the image into view to capture it safely.
- Some pages (like the browser’s own settings or store pages) block extensions from running. Use the extension on regular websites.
Troubleshooting
- "No area selected": open the popup → Start selection, then drag on the page
- If a site blocks access to the image, the extension uses a safe fallback and still provides a preview
- If you don’t see the context menu entries, re‑install or re‑enable the extension
