StackEdit is a free, open-source Markdown editor based on PageDown, the Markdown library used by Stack Overflow and the other Stack Exchange sites.

- This is an awesome online editor and it's completely free to use. With Markdown capability with a live preview, you'll know exactly what to expect when your post is published. There's a file and folder browser to the left and it can connect to Google Drive and other cloud storage. Find and replace is quite powerful, allowing the use of regular expressions. Ctrl-Alt-F to bring up this control that, otherwise, isn't visible in the user interface.

- I have used this editor for both school projects and open source projects. It allows me to edit markdown files both offline and while online. I have had no problem importing, editing and then exporting .md files locally and to github. It is definitely my go to tool for markdown work.
