PromptEditor: Markdown Sidebar for AI Prompts
Description from store

**Stop fighting with copy-paste and small text boxes.**
PromptEditor adds an "Edit in PromptEditor" button to every AI response on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Copilot. One click sends the response into a Markdown sidebar where you can refine, fill placeholders, and send it directly back to any AI chat — without ever leaving the page.

---

**✦ MARKDOWN SIDEBAR — EDIT WITHOUT LEAVING THE CHAT**
A lightweight Markdown sidebar (ChatGPT side panel) opens right alongside your AI chat. No new tabs, no copy-pasting to a separate app — just click, edit, and send.

**✦ SEND DIRECTLY TO ANY AI CHAT**
Finished editing? Click "Send to…" and choose where to send your prompt. PromptEditor opens a new tab and automatically inserts your prompt into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, or Copilot — ready to send with one keystroke. The smoothest AI workflow you'll find.

**✦ SMART PLACEHOLDER DETECTION**
PromptEditor automatically highlights [variables] and {parameters} in your prompt. Click any placeholder to instantly replace it with the real value. A practical prompt engineering tool for anyone building reusable prompt templates.

**✦ GLOBAL VARIABLES**
Define persistent key→value pairs once (e.g. your name, environment, project context) and PromptEditor will silently auto-fill every matching placeholder whenever a prompt loads. Toggle auto-replace on or off at any time.

**✦ LOAD FROM FILE**
Open any .txt or .md file directly into the editor with one click. Markdown files render as rich text; plain text files load as-is — ready to edit and send.

**✦ FIND & REPLACE**
Need to swap a word or phrase throughout your prompt? Open the Find & Replace panel, type what you want to change, and replace one occurrence or all of them at once.

**✦ RICH TEXT & MARKDOWN EXPORT**
Bold, italic, underline, bullet lists, numbered lists, tables — format your prompt visually. When you're ready, click "Copy Prompt" to copy clean Markdown to your clipboard, or use the "Download as .md" button to export your prompt as a file instantly.

**✦ PROMPT HISTORY**
Every prompt you copy is saved to a local history. Restore any previous prompt with one click, or delete entries you no longer need.

**✦ WORKS ON ALL MAJOR AI SITES**
- Claude (claude.ai)
- ChatGPT (chatgpt.com)
- Gemini (gemini.google.com)
- Perplexity (perplexity.ai)
- Microsoft Copilot (copilot.microsoft.com)

**✦ SELECT ANY TEXT**
Highlight any text on any of the supported AI sites and a PromptEditor button floats above your selection — send any part of a response to the editor instantly.

**✦ PRIVACY FIRST**
Zero data leaves your browser. No accounts, no servers, no telemetry. All history and variables are stored locally using Chrome's built-in storage.

---

**HOW TO USE**
1. Install PromptEditor and open any AI chat
2. Click the "Edit in PromptEditor" button that appears below any AI response
3. Edit the text in the side panel — fill in placeholders, reformat, rewrite
4. Click "Send to…" to open your prompt directly in any AI chat, or "Copy Prompt" to copy as clean Markdown
5. Your prompt is ready to go

---

**PERMISSIONS EXPLAINED**
- *Side Panel*: to show the editor alongside the page
- *Clipboard*: to paste content in and copy or send your finished prompt
- *Storage*: to save your prompt history and global variables locally
- *Active Tab*: to inject the "Edit" button on AI chat pages

Great idea, but not ready for game time. Significant issues: - Once the PromptEditor sidebar opens, there is no easy way to close it. Where is the button that allows me to quickly close the sidebar??? To close the sidebar, I have to locate the Extensions button, click on that button, locate the PromptEditor extension icon, click the PromptEditor icon, then locate the option to close the sidebar in the right-click context menu that appears. That process is extremely frustrating. - Once I've submitted feedback using the Feedback option, that's it. No more feedback is possible. Clicking the Feedback button again simply opens the "Thank you" message. If I have multiple pieces of feedback, I'm stuck after providing the first piece and cannot provide subsequent pieces of feedback. - The text size in the extension is microscopic. I love small text and normally decrease the size of the font when I setup a new computer or phone, but the size of the font in PromptEditor is beyond tiny. That wouldn't be a problem if it were possible to increase the text size, but that's not an option in the extension. Instead, we're stuck with text sized appropriately for ants. - The way this extension provides a rich text editor for markdown is confusing. If I type something like *this is bold*, it doesn't display as bold text. However, if I use the rich text options to actually make some text bold, there are no asterisks visible until export. This extension needs to pick one: use markdown or do not use markdown. This halfway use of markdown in what appears to be a rich text editor is confusing and difficult to use. Plus, because I cannot see the markdown formatting in the editor, it's allowing strange, unexpected markdown formatting to make it into the exported text. This is not a strong markdown editor as it's currently built.

Great start you have here. I think the typical AI "few lines" prompt is kind of annoying, but I didn't realize how annoying until I started playing with your editor. Nice to have a reasonable screen to work with. It might be nice to have an option around the enter key. If I type enter, on "restore" you don't keep the original formatting. ctl-enter you do honor. Okay, you are technically doing the right thing. However, it would be nice to have "enter" honored and kept on restore . . . perhaps as an option since it isn't standard behavior. You've targeted AI prompts here, but I think there is a much wider use here. Basically any website that has a large edit box could use something like this.

Very useful. I was always struggling with those little text boxes in the AI chats.
