How to use
1. Install HoverSpeak.
2. Hover over text or highlight the passage you want to hear.
3. Press Alt + Z to listen while you continue browsing.
4. Use Alt + C to pause/resume or Alt + X to stop.
Open the extension icon menu anytime to choose voices, adjust speed, preview options, edit shortcuts, or open More Settings.
Privacy-first design
HoverSpeak requires no account, login, or registration. All your preferences (selected voice, speed, panel settings, etc.) are saved privately in your browser. It uses Chrome’s standard Speech Synthesis API and only the minimal permissions needed to read text from the active tab and remember your settings locally. No data is collected or shared with us. When you enable and use cloud voices, speech processing is handled directly by the selected voice provider.
Notes on compatibility & advanced features
HoverSpeak works great on most standard websites. Like all browser text-to-speech tools, support can be limited on some highly dynamic pages (for example, those using canvas elements to display text).
The word-by-word reading panel requires voices that support word boundary tracking — this works with most device/local voices and some cloud voices.
Contextual word definitions use Chrome’s on-device AI capabilities and require recent versions of Chrome.
Device voices are fast and often work offline once installed; cloud voices can sound more natural but require an internet connection when enabled.

- If I could give it a zero I would. Desperately needed this to read a documents, hovered where it said, did the Alt and Z, no sound came out what so ever. And no trouble shoot help. Just find a website, save yourself the stress and the time.

- Interesting that this does not have more reviews or users. It seems to be really quick, snappy, with good voices, automatic language detection, and speed dials. Everything that I need is here. Easy to access and easy to set up. I can recommend this.

- I think this is good! But I do find it kinda annoying having to keep pressing ALT+Z. I honestly thought we’d be able to change the keybinds, or at least just click on the text and it would read out. I’m not really sure how to explain it, but that’s my only issue with this Chrome extension. Other than that, it’s a pretty solid extension :D.

- Extremely frustrating to use, but has a lot of promise. The highlight boxes look horrendous. I just want the selected block of text to have a custom background color, like a "highlight". But instead of doing that, this extension puts a horrible thick red and white highlight box around the section. Not only that, but the 'Always highlight text under the mouse' is completely unusable because once I select a block of text using the horribly ugly highlight box and press Alt + Z to start reading it aloud, I can't move my mouse without the extension drawing more highlight boxes around other possible blocks of text. It's just a horrible experience. I don't want it to do that. But if I disable that feature, then if I try to select text using the mouse cursor drag method, the extension won't read that area aloud, it will read some parent container instead. So instead of reading a paragraph, it might read the entire page. The extension should have other options too like adjusting volume and even pitch.
