This extension from Google lets you open Drive files directly from your browser in compatible applications installed on your computer. Start by installing Google Drive for Mac/PC then simply right-click on the file from Google Drive and select “Open with” to see a list of applications on your computer that can open it.

- SO I NEVER INSTALLED IT NEVER APPROVED THE PERMISSION IT HAD FOR MY CAMERA AND STORAGE AND OTHER STUFF WHO KNOWS HOW LONG ITS BEEN HERE . GIVES NO OPTION TO REVOKE THE PERMISSION. AND ILL SAY THIS AGAIN I NEVER GAVE PERMISSION TO MY CAMERA AND STORAGE OR ANYTHING. CHROME OS FOR YOU ALSO ?

- I installed Apps for Google App, and then this extension started following me in all my Google Chrome profiles, even after I uninstalled Google! I'll never install a Google program again. It's a real virus!

- Works well for me (OSX 15.7.1) But the Google Drive app must be running, as stated in the description. Otherwise, the apps won't appear in the menu or won't launch. EDIT: Still working well on Tahoe 26.2 (when Google Drive app is running). Very useful for opening Word, pdf files directly from the Google Drive webpage. Hitting 'save' in the Word app updates the file directly in Google Drive.

- Removed AT LEAST a half dozen times... Magically returns?! ZERO purpose! As for decades(?): you already CAN go to drive.google.com, docs.google.com, sheets.google.com, slides.google.com, keep.google.com [+mail +photos +more] - to view, open, edit, etc ALL files?! Since the functionality this unnecessary extension claims to offer already exists on the aforementioned sites AND it magically keeps reappearing [possibly after reset or powerwash? who knows!]: FAR more likely it's yet another Google stalking tool!

- GARBAGE! Does not work anymore. So, GOOGLE, you got HOW MANY PEOPLE working with you and you update all your other stuff everyday, but this hasn't been updated in over 1 year since 2024?? Really? it definitely doesn't work now, incompatible I suppose.

- When it works, it works well, but it stops working frequently. Not sure the reason, but sometimes after a reboot it stops working and after another reboot might start working again. This inconsistency makes it really unreliable.

- I can't access my Google Drive on my Macbook. What happened? I've been using this for years and the first time the rainbow wheel is on when I hover over the Google Drive icon which normally is clickable. Help!

- Have upgraded my mac to Ventura 13.7 and now this extension has stopped working i.e it does not show any of the microsoft office products as options in the open with dialogue , Coincidence or a support issue ? Having looked into this further it looks like the Mac upgrade reset my privacy settings System Settings/privacy & Security/extensions/Added extensions - ensure Finder helper and Google Drive Finder extensions tick boxes are ticked

- 4 stars because this isn't on every copy of chrome by default. I am able to open URLs in drive via my web browser because of this extension, and other people couldn't, and I didn't understand why.

- A lot of people are reporting that the app no longer works. For me at least, it still works just fine. On macOS for example, it allows me to open a PDF in the locally installed Preview app, directly from the Google Drive web app.

- Sad that GOOGLE DOCS app opens/edits a Word .docx file but it is often not compatible. If you change anything is saves the file w/o asking you. You got troubles. Use this Extension AND install Google Drive for Desktop and sign into your Google Gmail account and you should be good to go. Do not click on a Drive file in Chrome, right click and if you have WORD on PC, you can do a OPEN WITH / Word. When done editing in Word, just hit save and it is now a new version on Drive. But being Google, they are very bad and explaining and giving help. But it works. And other compatible PC apps will be listed as well for each file type. Google Drive is pretty handy. And who is better at doing a search for a file then Google. With this extension you can use Chrome (browser), Drive app, and now edit with the correct tool.
