Screen Reader for Google Chrome
This extension provides aid for the visually impaired people.
The extensions allow you to click on a text on a web page to read it aloud using the built-in text-to-speech (TTS) service. You can configure which TTS service to use by clicking on the extension's icon and selecting your favorite voice from the configuration dialog.
It is a Google Hackathon 2012 in Warsaw, Poland, Chrome extension. Each operating system has a text-to-speech service, so consider using them first.
If you need a new feature or spot an issue, you can report it on my GitHub page. I will respond as soon as possible. Remember that it is a side project, and I may have other priorities. But I will try to help as much as I can.

It works in the worst way possible. You need to click the text to get it to talk, but only on certain boxes of text. It will highlight what can be read with an annoying white box, most of which are links, meaning if you want to it to read it your going to ride that link too. What I actually need it to read can't be read for some reason, so I copy it all and paste it in their preview. While the extension is enabled the white highlight will just not go away, even if the toggle voice is currently off. Its just bad and not useful for what I need. It is actively distracting.
doest work o.O
Does work now and then and then only on part of a page. Seperate components on a sticky banner are handled as one component. If there is a text and buttons on that banner, all texts from separate components is read as if it was one component.
can't even hear it, doesn't work. i tried highlighting text, clicking text, nothing. not even the settings tester worked.
This chrome extension works very well. Thank you for this!
Works...sort of. Saw the ratings and wanted to see for myself. The main thing is that it works on CERTAIN pages, like Facebook, but not others, like Kindle. So my intended idea of having it read books to me won't work, at least with the Kindle Reader on Chrome for PC.
Agreed, doesnt work.
To all the people saying it doesn't work: You have to click the text to make it read. Not very obvious, I only found it when I went to copy and paste something after installing it. That said, it's choppy and cuts out partway through a paragraph (text I was reading had a lot of citations in it, so maybe that was the problem), and will only start back at the beginning of a paragraph. It also sounds very much like old an school text reader vs the newer technology they have in iOS accessibility features, for example. Would be great if you could select speed options. But it works.

I could not make it work. Ironically, I deleted it. Tried to leave a review, it wouldn't let me leave a review unless I had it installed. Ha! So I reinstalled it just so I could leave the review. It doesn't work. Maybe it used to, but it definitely doesn't now.

I think it should give us a choise for "not to read quotation mark and reference numbers". Because if there are a lot quotation mark or reference numbers, the sentence is broken.

This extension works fine, but you have to restart Chrome to use it, once it is installed. Then switch it on, and click somewhere in the page. The reader will either read everything or just the paragraph that you select. The text that is to be read is underlined. I would like to see this feature added - read everything below the point at which you click. Also, it would be nice to see some options list added that would allow you to add html5 tags that you don't want read, like lists or code items etc. If the code is publicly accessibly, ie open source, at github, then I would be happy to contribute.
It looks like a great extension, but how do you make it work? I installed it, went to a Google Doc, and it doesn't do anything. Deleting.

It does not reads pdfs, and only reads the line you click on so if you're reading you got to click on every single line which I assume would get annoying. Also it says "quotation mark" when reading a quote

It didn't really work. I couldn't figure out how to use it (and I'm usually pretty smart about these things). I navigated to three different websites, and it automatically started reading once. No luck getting it to work (automatically or manually) on the other two sites.
