The WhatsApp Desktop app doesn't require a desktop version of WhatsApp on your PC/ installed.
WhatsApp Web and Desktop apps are an extension on your Browser.

How to use WA Web using this extension?
1. Click “Add to Chrome” to add the extension to your browser.
2. After the extension finishes installing, click the "puzzle button" in the top right corner and the Pin button to add "WA Web" to your toolbar.
3. Now, click on the "WhatsApp" icon, and click the "WhatsApp Web" button.
4. Then, open WhatsApp on your phone.
5. Tap "Menu" or "Settings" and select "WhatsApp Web".
6. Scan the QR code you see on the screen using the camera on the app.
7. As you scan the QR Code, your account will be now accessible through your PC/Laptop.
