Prevents a tab from being closed accidentally

Description from store
Adds a padlock icon that allows toggling each tab's lock/unlocked state. When a locked tab is being closed, a confirmation dialog which allows preventing the tab from closing, is displayed.
📣 IMPORTANT: after locking, some interaction with the page is required for it to work. So you need to, for example, click anywhere on the page after locking to actually prevent the tab from being closed. This is how Chrome works.

- (2025-07-07) Martin Rios: Super handy — I recommend it for clumsy folks like me who always hit Command + W by mistake
- (2025-07-01) Alan Winston: Absolute FAIL. Description says this extension "Prevents a tab from being closed accidentally," which it sort of does -- but it also keeps me from navigating within a site without giving permission, and giving permission quietly unlocks the tab, allowing me to accidentally close the tab. Fail fail fail. From reading the developer's responses to other reviews, Chrome does not allow a useful approach. Okay fine. Put this information in the description so we know the extension doesn't usefully do what it says, and can't be fixed because Chrome. I resent having my time wasted because of an incomplete and misleading description. Plonk.
- (2025-06-27) Rich Griese: Make the "leave site / cancel" popup default to cancel. It's too easy to accidentally hit return and then it defeats the whole point of having the pinned tab not close (or change).
- (2025-06-24) Robin Winslow: Good extension. A feature I'd like, which I believe a previous "lock tab" extension (which no longer exists) had, would be the option to prevent changing the URL of the tab, by either: - Showing the same "Leave site?" pop-up whenever you navigate to a new URL; or - Opening all different URLs in a new tab instead of in the existing one For me, it's also important that this feature would hook into the JavaScript API for changing the URL, not only full-page reloads, because nowadays a lot of websites are SPAs which manage page transitions fully within the JavaScript framework.
- (2025-06-18) Steve Decovic: I'm so glad I'm not a profgrammer. It installed and works fine. This should keep me from screwing up and accidentally closing anything in my email/operations tab group.
- (2025-06-09) 刘云山: Noticed the extension only locks tabs opened after installation. Pre-existing tabs don’t lock until refreshed. A simple fix, but worth noting!
- (2025-04-19) Richard Mooney: As long as you interact with the locked page before trying to close it works great. I have several staff using the same computer and they all run important systems off it simultaneously, and closing a tab prematurely can cause issues. Also really appreciate that I can auto lock certain tabs so neither me nor my staff have to think about it on a day-to-day basis.
- (2025-04-15) Velke Pivo: Tab never locks no matter how many times I click on the lock icon. If I right-click and select Lock Tab a new tab to the instruction page opens. And yes, I interacted with the page. Completely useless.
- (2025-04-14) Graham Perrin: Sometimes I have to click two or three times on the lock icon before the icon shows the tab as locked. Then a click somewhere in the page that is not a link, for the lock to become effective. Then if I attempt to follow a link, I can't do so without confirming (the Leave button), after which the tab is no longer locked.
- (2025-04-10) Halla Bol: Doesnt lock any tab from closing. Surprising how it has a 3.6 rating
- (2025-03-10) Unmonetized: finally found a replacement, I used to use Warn Before Close
- (2025-02-22) Jess Barmatz: Two bugs: When I open a new tab, Lock Tab locks it! When I refresh an unlocked tab, Lock Tab locks it! These bugs make the extension close to useless.
- (2025-02-15) Michael Korkor: Bad. To close chrome I need to confirm closing each individual tab which will prevent chrome from properly picking up where I left off the next time I open it.
- (2025-02-13) Andrey Lappo: The extension does not protect the tab from accidental closing in any way.
- (2025-02-09) Rattanak Chea: would be nice to able to lock a tab in a tab group.
- (2025-01-10) MurderChickenXL: It's very nice that you just click the icon and you can choose to lock the tab you are on. But I'm still able to accidentally close the tabs. I'm on Vivaldi, so maybe that's why. I detest the pin tab option built into the browser and it move the tab off to the left and hides all info about what that icon is for. I was really hoping this extension would work. Maybe the dev can respond and help me figure out why it's not working for me.
- (2025-01-08) Teirdalin: Using it to keep myself from accidentally closing//hitting back while working on my music videos and it works perfectly. Great little extension that allows you to have the "Changes you made may not be saved" anywhere you need it. Essential for anyone who does browser based work.
- (2025-01-07) Derek Matuszewski: So much better than Chrome Close Lock. You can easily lock or unlock tabs or set certain tabs to auto lock.
- (2024-12-09) Sri: not workding
- (2024-12-02) Stefan Murawski: Im a profgrammer, but cant figure out how it works. entering 192.168.178.102 or 192.168.178.102* click on that page of the website where it is open click on close tab and its gone. reopen it, close chrome, and everything is gone. So: Plugin doesnt keep the tab open and doesnt prevent accidental closing. Not working on latest chrome it seams.
- (2024-11-26) Trung Nguyễn Như: I’m so glad I found this extension. It’s such a small yet incredibly effective solution. I often accidentally close important tabs, especially ones with active sessions that can’t be recovered, and I was even considering building my own extension to solve this issue. Luckily, I found yours instead. Thank you so much for developing this tool. Wishing you all the best, and I hope this extension gets the higher rating it deserves, you’re worth more than 4 stars.
- (2024-10-22) Daun Ozuna: Wonderful little solution for something that should be a browser feature
- (2024-10-18) Jeremy E: Perfect to keep some tab to not be close. Could you please add an option to keep : Chrome://newtab
- (2024-09-19) Chris Merchant: Sadly, I've had to lower my rating due to some unexpected behaviors I only just discovered. On a regular basis I perform online shopping routines on multiple sites. I thought that locking those shopping tabs would solve the problem of another extension I use to keep my tabs from multiplying by automatically closing background tabs that haven't been used in a preset number of minutes. While this did prevent those from being closed by the other extension, it unfortunately caused an issue that makes it impossible to use while shopping. Every time I try to add an item to a cart, the pop up appears asking if I'm sure I want to leave the page or I might lose changes (when there are no changes to be saved). I tried unlocking all my shopping tabs and pinning them while shopping, certain that would solve the problem. It didn't because although I have "auto lock pinned tabs" unchecked in the extension's settings, it is auto locking the tabs anyway, perpetuating the issue. I've posted the issue of pinned tabs locking improperly on the extension's Github page but have not yet heard back. Original review: Does what I need it too. Stops pinned tabs from changing pages when I forget to switch tabs before typing something in the address bar.
- (2024-09-16) John Saulka: Works well. Suggestion: An option/exception to allow a locked tab to refresh it's own url. Edit: Thanks for the reply and clarification as to why.
- (2024-07-28) Tyler Bonafede: This extension is a lifesaver. I accidentally manage to almost close my browser at least twice a day.
- (2024-07-19) Brett Tiplitz: Locks tabs, but also flags when loading new pages in locked tabs. Since a ton of sites work by clicling and it takes you to a new page, this ends up being overly annoying for those pages. CNN, nytimes, washington post, all do that behavior. Even when I try and close chrome out, it warns me that I'm going to a new page. removing extension as not really usable in it's current form
- (2024-07-09) Dean Sofer: As a fellow Chrome Extension developer: This is Awesome! Thank you for taking my feedback on Github seriously and adding the new auto-lock pinned tabs feature!
- (2024-06-25) Jason Rini: Doesn't work. Pages close regardless. Multiple "locked" tabs. Interacted with all pages. Still close like normal, no warning, no nothing. Waste of time.
- (2024-06-16) Reuben Boyd: Perfect across multiple Chromium based web browsers! Locks navigation, so my mouse gestures don't refresh/move away from a page that I'm looking to keep active. Vivid icon, that shows with the tab title for clear indication of where it's been engaged. Will use for a variety of tasks from keeping support chats with a wait time open, to locking onto pages where I'm pre-buffering content. Disclaimer: Assuming you can run an extension by installing it, without optimizing your browser (restarting it) is like looking to use update features without using a new session so the update has a chance to populate.
- (2024-06-15) Henry Stone: Does what it says. as well as clicking somewhere in the window, the first time you install it you need to restart chrome I think.
- (2024-06-06) Alan Morrison: ChromeOS Version 124.0.6367.225, Chrome browser Version 125.0.6422.141 - Installed, added tabs, interacted with them, but no lock symbol and both clicking the "x" and Ctrl-W closed the tabs. - Performed hard reload of each tab and the lock icon appeared, but I could still close the tabs by either method. - Restarted computer; same results. Am I doing something wrong? Do I misunderstand what the extension is supposed to do?
- (2024-05-28) Ivan Vojt: Doesn't work. Yes I "interacted" with a open tab.
- (2024-05-08) Michael Clark: So far works fine with me. I'm listening to Naxos music and going through my online RSS feeds---two sites which I often close by mistake. App is keeping both open with a warning screen if I try to close them.
- (2024-03-11) GM FAD: Nice and Simple
- (2024-02-11) Justin Campbell: Works quite well for how simple it is, and for this reason I am willing to accept some of the minor drawbacks. On some pages it does not seem to work, when I tried to lock the webstore page the extention did not display the locked icon when clicked. Otherwise exactly what I was looking for, and being open source is a good bonus.
- (2024-02-10) S K: Great except when you have to relaunch Chrome for updates and it won't close because of the locks. You have to unlock everything, relaunch and then relock everything. Not feasible. Also a pain when reloading a page that you have to relock it.
- (2024-02-04) demmorder: does not work
- (2024-01-08) Rob Gorbet: @gabrielmaldi Nice tool and useful for me. I wonder if the dialog box text could be less generic. I sometimes do want to close sites in which I've made changes that I don't want to save, so it confused me at first. I need to do an additional mental step of thinking "oh, is this dialog because of LockTab, or is this a real message?" Maybe it could say something like "This tab is locked by LockTab. Do you really want to close it?"
- (2024-01-08) Mark LaFlamme: Actually made me lose a tab I was trying to lock. Will lock some tabs, but not others. Uninstalling before it can mess me up any further.

- (2023-12-28) Youssef Lourayad: Can't believe Chrome doesn't offer this, the extension works great just follow the gif posted by the author below.
- (2023-12-27) Stan James: Glad such an extension exists! Note: It only works on tabs opened AFTER you install the extension. So I had to go and hit "reload" on my standard tabs that I wanted to protect. (Then click the extension button, then click anywhere on the page.) @gabrielmaldi - Might be good to include an animated gif or series of screenshot to show exactly how to use it for the first time, as it's not immediately clear.
- (2023-11-08) Vitor Barata: ir works, attention to the steps: 1st install the extension; 2nd you need to write the url to the extension options (left textbox). 3rd Click inside the left textbox and paste the web address (don't try to delete the existing text, it will disappear as you type or paste). 4th click the SAVE button 5th activate the tab you wish to lock (to prevent that tab from closing) 6th refresh/reload the tab contents 7th click inside the web page contents 8th check if a "lock icon" was added before the tab title 9th try to close the tab 10th a message-box will be displayed, instead of closing the tab 11th if you really want to close the tab, you can click the "leave" button, otherwise click the "cancel" button. 12th don't activate the checkbox "Prevent this page..." otherwise you will disable the feature of this "Lock Tab" extension, therefore, you will be able to close the tab as usual, without any protection to prevent closing. Suggestion: a right-click on the tab-title to lock/unlock would be easier, instead of opening the extension options copying and pasting the url into the text area. I don't need the right textbox feature in the options page.
- (2023-11-07) Fabio De Pasquale: Works great, but please add more Settings options. For example, I don't want the extension to prepend the locket icon in the tabs. It gets ugly and it replaces the title especially when you have a lot of tabs open.

- (2023-10-15) Hermann “Gwz40” Brewitzch: Doesn't work at all. The icon just sits there, nothing happens if I click it.
