Automatically Set Your Tab Groups!

Image from store Auto Tab Groups
Description from store This extension allows you to set custom rules that then auto sort your tabs. IT does this using Google Tab Groups. It lets you set up as many rules as you want. To add a new rule click add group button and fill out the TITLE, Domain / URL and COLOR fields. When you open the open extension the TITLE column will be the tab group name. The DOMAIN/ URL column will be the value searched in the website URL field that extension uses to sort the active tab. The COLOR column will be a box that when drop down is clicked allows the user to pick a color for the tab group. These preferences will be saved to users google profile when either the save button is clicked or delete button is confirmed and work across multiple devices with extension under same profile. In order to change or delete a rule you must first check the checkbox for the row and click edit or delete. If deleting values confirm the delete in delete window. If editing values makes sure all fields in rows are checked are not blank, and that color box is not set to grey. Otherwise a warning message will display letting you know to set these fields. The extension works as follows, say you have the value Test1 in Name Column, test1 in URL column, and the box set to Blue. Any website URL you visit with test1 ex.(www.test1thisisatest.com) will be automatically sorted into a group named Test1. You can also specify multiple terms to search with by separating them with commas. For instance, if you assign a group with TITLE column of Colors, and DOMAIN/ URL of blue, yellow, and green; any url you load with those search terms will go in the Tab Group Named Color. The final column COLOR, is the color of this tab group that gets set. By default the following keyboard shortcuts are enabled. You can use Ctrl+Shift+Y, Ctrl+Shift+H, and Ctrl+Shift+U to close, open and toggle tab groups respectively. You can also change this by going to chrome://extensions/shortcuts as well. There is a settings / options page you can get to by clicking the gear in the top right corner. Here you can enable a zoomed in view for larger font size and window for the popup window, change grouping from other windows behavior, and save and load your files from a local file on your computer.

  • (2024-02-28) Andy P: Works well, just remember to actually get it to work with existing tabs you need to refresh the page. Also note that if you have existing tabs they get destroyed. *Absolutely needs more colours*, even better would be a colour picker. Text in the dropdown is a little small, I guess there's limited space. Would be nice to have a full page editor for bulk building.
  • (2024-02-07) Guido Schmitz: Super helpful, but I'd love to have more than 8 colors to choose from or be able to define my own colors so that the colors can reflect the logo of the brand you grouped or what ever.
  • (2024-01-23) Tim Delaney: Very nice. I would suggest a new option - merge pinned tabs (off by default). Currently pinned tabs will be moved to a group. Another option would be to auto-collapse other tab groups when a tab group is expanded. I've seen other extensions for this, but they don't collapse until a tab is selected, so it may not be possible to collapse others only when expanding. Also the colour choices are inconsistent with what can be manually selected for a tab group, and manual selection appears to override. I would suggest not requiring a colour, and syncing with the chrome-selectable colours.
  • (2024-01-08) Anna Chatman: This is amazing. I literally have 205 tabs open right now and that is a low number compared to what I usually have. This and CTRL+TAB+A have made life so much easier. I often will do things like open a search on a website (say Amazon) and then open a new tab from the search page for all the things I would like to review after I exhaust the initial search - this leaves a lot of tabs open and when I do come back to whatever I'm reviewing, it used to be a mess and now I can manage it. I also open a number of tabs at one time daily and this means they automatically group - saving me sooooo much time with regard to tab management. When I have so many tabs open they often get to the point of me not being able to find them as they reduce in size - this also solves that. I have been able to manage some searches that are more random like "google" for any thing I simply search. I'm giving 5 stars because as it is - this extension works wonders for people like me. However, I would love a way to group all the tabs that don't fit into another group and there isn't really a connecting word or topic. So basically anything that doesn't fit into an existing group would then go to a group named "Random." That would clean my tabs up even further, but I haven't figured that out yet - for now I just select them and add them manually to the Random group, but would prefer automatic. Thanks for creating - really love this!
  • (2023-11-09) Brian Rigwald: Very useful. The only thing I would like to see is it not combine tabs from separate windows. Sometimes I need an item in a separate window and be able to have them side-by-side, but if I make a selection that causes one to refresh, it moves the tab to the group in the other window.

  • (2023-07-16) Roy h: litarly blows my mind this extension only has 450 users installed on all my profiles in 10 minutes If you want this to really blow up i would suggest the follow features 1. if possible (not sure there's an api for it) integration into the tab menu and add support adding the domain\subset of the url to an existing group 2. integrate into "Tab Manager Plus for Chrome" extension and show groups in that view. thank you for making my life easier dude !

  • (2022-06-22) Augustas Grikšas: Works as advertised. Colors does not exactly match how they will look in chrome. When in two browser window setup it explicitly drags Tab from one window to the other to include in the group. Expected behavior create same group in different window. Could be as as option to enable disable this kind of behavior.
