New tabs should always open to the immediate right of the current tab. And now they will.
Usually when I open new tabs, it's not because a lightning bolt struck, and I must switch from my current activity to a new and different one. Most of the time the new tab is directly related to what I'm currently doing, so when Firefox (or a Chromium-based browser) opens tabs at the end of 50 tabs, they're almost guaranteed to be far from the tabs I was working with. I then find myself hunting around for the tabs I was just at, sometimes trying long and RSI-inducing drag-and-drop operations to regroup things.
Sure, if I wanted to strictly manage things, I could always have separate tab groups in this tab set, but often my workflow is more organic than that, and I end up in this place, and I should be able to continue working with the software in the way that my mind expects it to work.
So maybe this isn't for you, but I'm Always Right.

- (2025-03-12) John Rhee: Works perfectly when using Ctrl+T or middle-clicking a link.
- (2025-03-08) first name last name: Doesn't work when I open several links from the same page; the first link opens to the right of the active link (as it should), the second link opens to the right of the first link, the third link opens to the right of the second link and so on.
- (2025-03-06) Hawk Chen: simple, get the job done.
- (2025-03-05) Laurent TAUPIAC: Works as design.
- (2025-01-28) Hannes Grebin: Works like a charm. this is a good replacement for an extension that no longer works. Thank you so much.
- (2025-01-28) Lar Al: Works poorly. It opens the first tab next to the current tab but then opens new tabs after the that tab and so on. FAIL!
- (2025-01-13) Bar Horing: Thank you! I've been looking for a simple extension like this for a while, it makes my life a lot better now, thank you 🙏
- (2025-01-06) Richard Penman: This should be the default setting
- (2024-11-15) Robert Meerman: Does exactly what I want, which is place all new tabs next to the current one while preserving their order. If I have three tabs open now, ALPHA, BRAVO, and CHARLIE and my current tab is BRAVO when I open three new tabs they appear between BRAVO and CHARLIE. It helps to think of it as a tree: ALPHA BRAVO |-- New1 |-- New2 `-- New3 CHARLIE If I open another link while in BRAVO it will appear between New3 and CHARLIE.
- (2024-11-06) François Georgy: Does not work. Even after a restart.
- (2024-09-30) Mark F: Works as described for opening tabs from favourites next to current, which is what I was looking for. Thanks
- (2024-09-19) Frank Utne: Sort of works but not really. I wanted a replacement for 'Open Tabs Next to Current' since it stopped working. This extension does open the FIRST tab next to current tab but all subsequent tabs open after that and other subsequent tabs. Needs redesign.
- (2024-08-28) Caitlin McElwee: Works
- (2024-08-15) Callan McNulty: Does not work when opening links in a new tab. Only the first link clicked on a page opens next to the current tab.
- (2024-08-11) fors: works
- (2024-07-30) Shawn Edmondson: Yay, since "Open New Tab After Current Tab" extension is deprecated apparently.
