Beyond dark mode for Google Docs
Relieve eye-strain from the default Google Docs experience with DocsAfterDark. Customize the look of your documents without modifying the original file.
DocsAfterDark features a modern, sleek dark mode and a vibrant light mode. Try out the "midnight" dark mode variant for true-black backgrounds. Accent colors shared by both modes can be customized using the color slider in the settings popup.
Customize the document background to a darker (or lighter) shade. Or, input your own custom CSS (background-color) color.
Choose between the colorful, grayscale, and black invert modes to render document content in dark mode. The colorful invert mode preserves the essence of colors, but note that the colors will not be exact to the original document.
Globally enable/disable the extension, change to dark/light mode, and access all of the above customizations in the settings popup, which can be opened by clicking on the extension’s icon in your browser’s toolbar.
Temporarily enable/disable the extension for the current document using the toggle button in the bottom left corner of the page.

- 🙏 PLEASE Can you also make this work on sheets? countless people like me, don't use google docs but just google sheets!

- The extension's UI is easy to use and the effects are exactly what it says on the tin. There is a convenient button on the bottom left of the screen that toggles the dark mode on and off. When I first installed the extension, I had to reload the page with the document so that the extension would activate, but that was a one-time thing and it now works automatically any time I open a document. I saw some other reviews complaining that a recent update to Google Docs caused the extension to not work anymore. The developer of the extension promised that an update was coming soon to fix these issues. This update seems to have been already released a few days ago, since it's working correctly for me now. All in all, this extension is working perfectly!

- Yay! It's back to working fine again. The menu dropdowns are back. Thanks for updating. Been using this one for awhile now.

- What happened!!!! This worked wonderfully and now I cannot see the menu drop downs.

- something happened with the latest update and now it's not working properly, I've been using this for years but now have to look for an aternative
- illeana
- Was good until they updated it, it's awful now and I wish there was an option to go back to the other design/layout.
- Evan Chan
- This extension is the bewst extension i have ever used!!! I have keratitis which makes looking at bright white screens hurt, which made it hard for me to do my work as a playwriter. I've told all my friends about this!!
- Ethan Mumma
- Best Dark Mode I've found so far! Previous ones were either a free trial that eventually asked for money, or did other things in the background that they didn't mention and that I didn't want (like pinning Google search trends every time I launch my browser; why would I want that?). This one just does what it says, which should be the bare minimum, but is actually out of the ordinary now.

- 20 Mins later & 10 YT videos, I figured out you have to refresh the docs page you are on even if you enable and save it. Please add that to your description! lol
- Cattywampus
- Also inverts/darkens/grayscales images
- Cristian Borrero
- Works really good.
- Weary
- I love this extension so much. I like how there's a switch button to toggle it off, and I love how you can raise it to be above the word count. Excellent extension!
- Upala Bhowmik
- the custom color does not work...which is why I tried this one out...RIP
- Lewis Johnson
- Pretty nice. Has lots of room for customization. My biggest complaint: the "add fonts" dialogue is illegible.
- hannarren
- just glitched the entire chrome browser, idk if just me
- Michael Doleman
- Dark mode seems to work, but nothing else does. The idiotic addition of the unremovable little emoji in the lower left corner interferes with word count and makes it nonfunctional -- why would you do that?
- Elisa Chiarotto
- Works very well and it is easily customizable!
- Natalie Thomas
- Perfect for reducing eyestrain and looks wonderful!
- Michael Bielski
- Oh Thank God! My eyes stopped hurting almost instantly!
- Samira Urzua
- I love the extension but if my document is pageless with a background color it will overwrite the background instead of showing the one I selected on google docs's options, even on default. Which kinda ruins it for me. Selection other options (dark ones) rather than default will invert images which also ruins it for me. I love it but I can't use it, I will change the review if fixed. (any of the two)
- Jenna Bratcher
- Only dark mode works. Blend, shade, and custom doesn't work at all.
- Mihajlo Stankovic
- It works perfectly fine, would be nice if you can toggle off invert for images in google docs
- Sean
- Darkens the Google Docs interface with options for inverting the color of the document itself. EXACTLY what I was looking for.
- Juli R
- Doing a study guide with a lot of writing really messed up my eyes, was looking for a medium grey option, my eyes thank you!
- Alan Hughes
- I don't know if it is possible, but it would be great if each document could remember its settings, instead of one setting for all documents.
- Alexandre Rodrigues
- THANK YOU SO MUCH MY EYES WERE NEEDING IT. FIVE FREACKING STARS. THANK YOU.
- Tony Adkins
- Had Zero effect on Google Sheets.
- Chloe
- The best dark mode extension for google docs by a mile
- Colin Eberly
- Great except for some issues in sidebars, like for instance image options, there is a white container box for those options that should be adjusted for dark mode.
- That One Acidic Phoenix
- Custom no invert dark mode works without messing with photos! just got to change the text color. Thank youu. You may have to refresh the page if it doens't seem to be doing anything as that is what i had to do.
- Mariah Robinson
- This is the best extension for google doc dark mode so far. I'm very pleased with it!
- Palace Wholesale
- Not currently fully functional as described. The Custom setting has no effect. Black and white are only options for the actual canvas of the document.
- Anantesh Mohapatra
- This actually works and looks good. It also works for the Docs PWA, which is nice.
- Luscinia Nightengale
- Honestly, after trying two other extensions for Docs specifically, as well as the Night-Eye extension (which I love, but does make it hard to read highlighted text) I wasn't expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised. Not only does this work, it looks near-identical to how Night-Eye does it, except without the blown-out text highlighting. I can't recommend this enough, especially if you use Night-Eye on google, since it thematically looks identical, just optimized for google docs.
- Jo Jo
- Beautiful, now when I type memoirs on how my victims went and their final words I can preserve my eyes. Thank you!
- Napalm
- S tier extension. Exactly what I was looking for
- NapazTrix
- States "With the invert option, document content (excluding some elements, such as images) will be rendered in a comfortable dark mode." which is not true, it still inverts images no matter the settings, if you want a dark document.
- FWYTYK
- The only one that actually works. Lifesaver
- omer latif
- It is really nice but the custom does not work. The info thing is also useless; it doesn't tell u anything. Get the custom option to actually work and I'll def use this all the time and give a better rating.
- Clara Ramirez Grossi de Oliveira
- This is exactly what I was looking for! Perfect shade, perfect brightness, perfect contrast. It doesn't only stop google docs from hurting my eyes, it also looks reaaally nice (which was what bugged me about the other extensions, they looked bad and kinda cheap). Love it.
- Siddhant Choyal
- Absolute d*gsh*t. Works somewhat but if you select the whole row/column/page to modify a property, it's becomes white along with the text so nothing is readable. So flipping annnoying!!@!!
- Sean Reo
- Sort of works, but the ability to change the color of the page itself seems broken. I've tried everything, it's only stark white or full black. I really downloaded this so I could set my colors how it looks in the "Custom" sample image, but it just seems broken? Others on the GitHub have noticed this as well. Will happily change my review once this is fixed, but it's pretty much the entire reason I downloaded the extension and what separates it from similar options. Running on MacOS Tahoe M2 Macbook Pro, Google Chrome Version 138.0.7204.101
- Melonpan
- Very good! it works very well thank you
- Uh Ryder
- saved my eyes

- Antonia Cajigal
- Wonderful tool. worked right away, very minimalist and detailed.
- Ryan Tipps
- Works great! Only downside is it inverts the color of emojis 😢
- milo
- Amazing, but would be even better if it also darkened the home page for google docs!!!
- Emiliano Biancotti
- Doesn't work on sheets
