The number on the icon describe the following questions count.
Check/Uncheck the check box near to the question in order to mark it follow.
Active questions - list of 24 random/tagged unanswered questions from StackOverFlow.
Current Browsing - open questions in one of chrome windows/tabs.

Does not display anything under Current Browsing though I have a tab with a SO question opened. Maybe it has to do with that I use multiple Chrome profiles?
