Crowdsourcing titles and thumbnails to be descriptive and not sensational
DeArrow is a browser extension for crowdsourcing better titles and thumbnails on YouTube. The goal of DeArrow is to make titles accurate and reduce sensationalism.
DeArrow is a paid (if you want) browser extension. You can purchase an unlimited-use license key for 1$. However, if you cannot, or do not want to pay, you can use the extension by clicking the "I can't/don't want to pay" button.
Titles can be any arbitrary text. Thumbnails are screenshots from specific timestamps in the video. These are user submitted and voted on.
By default, if there are no submissions, it will format the original title to the user-specified format, and set a screenshot from a random timestamp as the thumbnail. This can be configured in the options to disable formatting, or show the original thumbnail by default.
If the original thumbnail is actually good, you can still vote for it in the submission menu, and then it will act like a submission.
No more dealing with clickbait, arrows, or annoying faces.
Users can submit better titles and thumbnails for each video and vote on them.

How does DeArrow differ from Clickbait Remover for YouTube
- Unlike Clickbait Remover, DeArrow's main purpose is for crowdsourcing better titles and thumbnails
- When a crowdsourced title is not available, DeArrow will auto-format it according to your setting, but does it in a more sophisticated way than Clickbait Remover. Instead of only setting all words to lower case, or capitalizing every word, DeArrow supports casing systems such as "Title Case" and "Sentence case". These will still allow acronyms and proper names to remain capitalized.
- When a crowdsourced thumbnail is not available, DeArrow by default shows a screenshot at a random timestamp in the video. Clickbait Remover's thumbnails use YouTube auto-generated thumbnails, and while they are seemingly random, they are chosen by a machine learning algorithm to favor faces with expressions, and other overstimulating features. DeArrow uses truly random timestamps generated by its own server. DeArrow will also check the SponsorBlock database to ensure the randomized thumbnail is not inside of a sponsor segment.

- (2024-05-20) lowpoly brain: So, it is free or what? "You are successfully registered for free access. You will be notified when free access is granted." Still waiting...
- (2023-11-09) Ty S: great extension. I've had it for a while and ngl I absolutely love it. only problem is that whenever I go to submit a new title or thumbnail, the title never actually saves/updates and just use's the original one, and the thumbnails keep "failing to render". whatever that means. its still useful cause I can see what others have changed the videos to, but its kind of pointless since I cant seem to get it to work myself. besides those two things I think whoever made this did a good job. thank you.
- (2023-11-09) Lumi: Chill guys, it's literally just $1 to support the developer (who also created Sponsorblock and definitely deserves it), and to get a whole better experience on youtube forever, these things cost money to run. If you can't/don't want to pay you can still contact him and get the thing for free.
- (2023-11-04) Hexioum: Very useful. Really helps to understand the subject of videos before clicking and wasting time to get to the point.
- (2023-11-03) Samuel: The most useful tool for YouTube to filter out the constant clickbait that there is now
- (2023-10-30) Oliver Jay Aaby: Five stars, so perhaps someone, who is not in debt to his local dentist, can throw a couple of dollars, towards Ajay, instead of the local Strip Club. I wish I was swimming in cash, so thank you, for allowing free access, after 24 hours. Will remember that, till I am in a better position. Good people deserve to be rewarded. Enough ranting, thank you.
- (2023-10-26) sloane: Tested out the free trial and loved it. But how long do I have to wait to get it for free?
- (2023-10-14) Acejinjo: Does it's job. Didn't expect how much I needed retitled to channels that clickbait titles instead of straight to the point. While I was fine using a different addon to remove those lame thumbnails, having this to not only change it in addition to changing to more memorable titles instead of clickbait ones you would see in news articles. Mega props to the community and the dev! I don't know if I had a key or not, but I did have access on one other browser before the paywall thing. But I will not ask request until I pay up anyway for my other web browsers it's only fair. Wish it was also part of a Discord server shop snice the available payment option I cannot do at the moment. Like the other reviewers said it's a paywall yes, but you can use it for free by waiting to have access.
- (2023-10-13) choke: great extension, i can actually watch some channels without having to see what every video is all about and for the people complaining about the "pay me now or wait 3 days" its literally a single dollar surely you can afford that right?
- (2023-10-08) a plastic bag: For the first time, I can open up a channel like Linus Tech Tips and not die from cringe from the thumbnails and titles. Fantastic extension.
- (2023-10-06) Kestyash: damn, guys, it's just a 1$... are you greedy or what? that's a decent price for better experience, and I think the developer deserves it. not to mention you can get this jewel for free
- (2023-10-06) jk: Say goodbye to clickbait-y, overexaggerated titles and thumbnails, with a paid (currently free, if you sign up and wait 2-3 days), OPEN-SOURCE extension, from the developer of another great extension called SponsorBlock, which I recommend just as highly as this one.
- (2023-10-03) Mykyta Mnykh: Paid extension. The whole point of this extension was crowdsourcing. Now it's paid and no one is using it, so there are no more custom titles or video covers like before because there's no one to do it.
- (2023-10-02) brady: I used to have this extension and just reset my computer, and now it's a paid extension? For an extension that used to be free, is open source (I'm fairly sure) and that all of the content being used is made by other users, that's pretty weird to do. I'm sure making people watch ads when getting the extension as an option on the menu would be okay. EDIT: Thank you for responding. The way the free access button was worded, made it seem like it was unlikely to get it. If all you have to do is wait 3 days, that is fine. Thank you for explaining.
- (2023-09-30) Calico Trash Man: "pay me or wait three days" might edit review in three days, might not.
- (2023-09-29) ค: amazing addon, though id like an option to have it just replace the thumbnail with a random screen grab of the video rather than have to go out and download community thumbnails as that seems to be much slower
- (2023-09-27) Michael Wood: Wants a $1 to use it... Im good.
- (2023-09-15) Orion Hunter: Good!
- (2023-09-15) Ritu: Nice project and good considering it's very new. Here's the feedback part: It does not it fit well, if someone is using "enhancer for youtube" extension. It removes button from that extension to place it's own. Switching between "original" and "dearrow thumbnail" is sometimes tricky. Youtube start playing video if I hover, so I am confused how that works. Switch button could use some more catchy colours.. Thanks for the extension, hope this was helpful, And hope you have a nice day...
- (2023-09-09) ArieX: to unlock this extension: 1) go to browser extensions tab 2) enable developer mode 3) click on service worker 4) in new opened window in console tab enter chrome.storage.sync.set({activated: true})
- (2023-09-04) Hellen Jiang: Excellent extension, goes a long way to improving my youtube experience. Not a lot of videos have submissions, but to be expected since it is new. Will only get better with time.
- (2023-09-01) Thor Lancaster: Great concept and awesome when it works, but it causes tons of extra network requests (sometimes in the thousands) when opening webpages, even non-youtube ones. Fix this and it'd be 5/5.
- (2023-08-31) Alex: Every single day, I am amazed by this plugin.
- (2023-08-20) katie Barber: love you for sponsorblock. i originally found SB via a newpipe app on my phone. then happy to find it on pc. now this. great work on all your extensions!
- (2023-08-18) Edward N: Was skeptical at first as there is so much scope for people to overdo it, but I was gladly wrong. The titles are so much more informative and better thought out than the originals, almost every time I find a video that looks interesting and click on it, it turns out it had a previously utterly vague title that was rewritten by this addon. Would recommend.
- (2023-08-16) Cameron Klebieko: Serious middle finger to clickbaity and misleading content. I'm still blown away every time I switch to the original title and thumbnail of a video and find how vague and manipulative it is. Such a simple but effective addon that everyone should use. Easily in my top 5 extensions.
- (2023-08-16) Vincent Yu: So many youtubers clickbait their videos now, so this is a big help. One glitch is that it doesn't work in incognito mode, though.
- (2023-08-14) Hexaria Support: Very useful, But I do not appreciate the fact that the icon is a shirk which is related to black magic, and thats bad and haram, but other than that the extension is amazing
- (2023-08-11) Flesh: Would love an option to not show the icon at all when it's only altering title case, and not actually changing it by using any crowdsourced title.
- (2023-08-08) Tombstone: Lets go Ajay. Hope is become as successful as the legendary SponsorBlock.
- (2023-08-06) Ferdinand F. Rios: It's good, but could you add the option of "Show a screenshot at the beginning/final/middle of the video" in "When No Submitted Thumbnail Exists"?? like the "clickbait remover for Youtube" extension. The random option take so much resources and time to render the screenshots
- (2023-08-03) SiDjack: While i understand the appeal of this it is simply not for me
- (2023-08-02) Lexi Fox: From the same developer that created Sponsorblock which I also highly recommend. Id like to emphasize that I never leave reviews, but I truly believe everyone should use this extension.
- (2023-08-01) Tilde: Most of the time the titles are either too long or are less effective at conveying the content. Nearly all the time replacing the thumbnails is a bad idea, because no attempt is made to convey the message of the original thumbnail - they just replace it with a pointless thumbnail. I had to turn off the re-casing of titles because it didn't do it how I like, only to find most of the "non-clickbait" altered titles are not in proper case. Ultimately, I stopped using it because it was just bad at doing what it's supposed to do, and too often made it worse for the content I watch.
- (2023-07-28) Viacheslav Khromiak: At first I didn't think I'll use this. I mostly skip clickbaity titles and thumbnails. I don't like the thumbnail removal though, fortunatelly it's optional. It's a great tool for news channels that do useful stuff but useless titles.
- (2023-07-25) BluTide: AMAZING, one of the best youtube tools
- (2023-07-16) Thomas Deverell: Wonderful work! Making the internet a better place.
- (2023-07-13) Krist Tripper: scrolling the youtube homepage has never been so pleasant. god bless you.
- (2023-07-12) Erwin Konkel: Awesome idea and I really enjoy it, but can't really give it full stars as it sometimes slows down youtube and I need to disable extension for a while to be able to use YouTube. Then I forget about it for a couple of days. would be cool to optimise it or at least give it like 3 seconds timeout which I would be comfortable with
- (2023-07-10) FatheredPuma81: Great extension but thumbnail option is broken and checks every video even when set to only do so on one specific channel which results in a few second delay with no thumbnails. The only solution is setting Thumbnail Generation Service to Never but that results in that single channel loading at a glacial pace with absolutely no caching.
- (2023-07-09) Tanmay Shroff: great extension. makes ignoring pyrolive and moist critical easier
- (2023-07-07) Ruben Kelevra: Must have! Hope it get's adopted and filled by users as fast as SponsorBlock!
- (2023-07-05) Danilo Vojnov: Must have if you are sick and tired of stupid Tittles and stupid thumbnails. I think this kind of community moderation of website might be more incorporated in the future. Keep up the good work. Only thing is that I think youtube is little slower with this plugin but I think it is worth it.
- (2023-07-05) 2vsh: Amazing! A great addition to the SponsorBlock family:)
- (2023-07-04) Nick Foster: You are doing the lords work, truly
- (2023-07-04) Emma Chan: I find the extension brilliant. I had been waiting for an anti-sensationalism extension to exist for so long that I had started to lose hope. I even experienced bouts of depression due to the overwhelming amount of sensationalism. This extension frees me from the toxicity I've been dealing with for several years, and I know that toxicity increased on YouTube due to the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020. What I appreciate about it is that it allows for deep customization, something that Clickbait Remover doesn't do. I can even remove sensationalism from emojis like "😂🤣😱" and replace them with "😆😨," making the emojis a bit more bearable. If there are unbearable emojis in the thumbnails, I can remove them by modifying them. That's the strength of the extension. However, there is one drawback to the extension: it takes a bit long to load the thumbnails. At first, you see the thumbnails in gray, and then they are replaced with the modified thumbnails. It's the only negative aspect of the extension—the waiting time for the thumbnails to load.
- (2023-07-01) Neer: doing my part ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
- (2023-06-27) Pongsatond Trechinapong: It's good but it make youtube take longer and longer to load so no thanks for now
