Allows a user to provide the URL of the page that loads in a new tab.

Description from store
Allows you to change the new tab page to the New Tab Redirect app page, or a custom URL of your choice!
Choose from chrome's about pages, *NewTab, Extensions, Downloads, History*, a few popular URLs, or provide your own. Your custom tab can also be a local file, allowing you to create your own new tab page. Saving blank text will cause your new tab to be about:blank.
Files can begin with: file:\\, file://, and file:///
Important: This is not meant to replace your homepage, only new tabs. If your browser is set to load the New Tab page as your homepage, there may be odd consequences.
Note: Because this extension perform a "redirect", I have no control over address bar highlighting or focus.

- (2025-07-04) Rhomis Rhemis: It works. Kind of a bad that Chrome browser almost has a setting for new tabs to have a custom URL, but doesn't. In fact it is so bad that over a half million people have to take the time to add this extension to do something simple as that.
- (2025-05-22) Lee Hodsdon: Works in normal and in inPrivate mode. One defect is it does not follow background color (system, light, dark) configured in web browser for internal docs (chrome://, edge://, or about://). I have it redirect to about:blank to get a blank new-tab page, but get the garrish all-white blank page. Would prefer a dark blank page which is what I configured the web browser to use, by default. External web pages would use whatever color the web site chose, but internal web pages should match the web browser's config.
- (2025-05-02) Fun Sai: Great extension, just what I needed. Simple and functional.
- (2025-04-19) Ryan Kelly: Great
- (2025-03-19) Robert Zanatta: Used to work well, but now it loses the configured redirect URL every couple of days. Too bad - useful extension when it works.
- (2025-03-01) Feng William: simple and does the work that chrome should have provided as a default setting! great job
- (2025-03-01) Ben Schneider (bencreatesthings): Simple, lightweight, and it works. 10/10
- (2025-02-21) Tae Su Lee: i made chatgpt my default search engine with an addon, wanted to access gmail or google.com faster, so added new tab redirect to google.com which made everything complete, thank you!
- (2024-12-23) Badjano: Does what it says, but takes the focus out of address bar, which is very bad
- (2024-11-24) Dave Land: Should be browser-native, but this is nearly as good! Thank you.
- (2024-10-29) Steve: Does what it says on the tin! Let's me set my homelab dashboard as my new tab page in Brave.
- (2024-10-10) Steven Ma: User-Friedly easy to use Not complex I guess my edge need it too!
- (2024-10-02) Jason Potter: Chrome Settings > On Startup: "New Tab Redirect is controlling this setting" Just doesn't work. Whatever address I use the new tab is always Google search.
- (2024-08-25) Shankar Ganesh: New Tab redirect is a perfect tool that meets my minimalist expectations
- (2024-08-13) Lincoln Mott: this has became useful soo much, my newtab without this is a fake random new tab, and this allows me to change it back to the chrome deafult tab, this is the only solution to it so 5 stars, also useful when you need to open alot of the same website.
- (2024-07-09) Ori Lael: Great!!
- (2024-06-23) Pines Tam: This extension disabled by Chrome automatically once in a while and I have to enable it again. This happened at least once a month. Any idea how does this happan ? (Windows 10)
- (2024-05-26) Mark Resnick: AWESOME
- (2024-04-12) Guarén Chafa: I've been using this for a long time and I really like it.... BUT... I wasted hours of messing around with why it wasn't working and realized that you need a full URL string in the setting like http://www.website.com instead of just www.website.com. Developer please fix this and either give warning or automatically fix the formatting. Thanks.
- (2024-04-05) Assaf Bental: Installed it, it requested the manage apps permission, so uninstalled it and installed Custom New Tab URL instead.
- (2024-04-02) Mr Gordy: The only one that works the way it should. Thank you
- (2024-03-09) Sérgio Coelho Santos: The only one that will properly set focus away from the address bar and into the new page! I just wish it were smaller/simpler. I don't need the extra bells and whistles, and it takes 1.5MiB when it could probably be a mere <100KiB.
- (2024-03-04) Xavier Taylor: Thanks mate! hopefully before the heat death of the universe chrome has this built in :)
- (2024-03-02) CHERWALLY: The extension does what it says... but why Chrome is missing such a simple function? Why do we need to add extensions for such a small thing that should ne normal default in ANY browser! Why Chrome doest switch to the new tab by default? Shame on Chrome...seriously!
- (2024-02-23) Elliott Fulker: Superb
- (2024-02-07) Teodor Marinov (Teo): If you encounter a blank page, try reinstalling the extension and reapplying the permissions. This resolved my issue.
- (2024-01-20) Sinclair Bean: Simple and straight forward just works!!!! Thanks
- (2024-01-12) Marco T: As it is, it seems to work well enough. But... WHY does it need and keeps nagging me, with an obtuse message to "allow management access to access all your apps!". Seems odd, in there are no "apps" I wish this extension to "manage" for me.
- (2023-12-14) Mark Baumgartner: I found the fix to the "blank page opening" on local HTML file redirect issue! In Extensions, locate New Tab Redirect, click Manage Extension, then turn on the switch for "Allow access to file URLs".
- (2023-12-13) Wilfred Darr: Works on edge: the idea to check chrome webstore for an extension for edge wouldn't have crossed my mind in a million years, but it here it is, so 5 stars to the programmer. rajesh4life said "Edge will initially disable it on installation to "protect" you, so you'll need to Manage Extensions and turn it on from extension Manager, then set your preferred URL". After following his instructions it works for me.
- (2023-12-09) Hack Man: I used this for many years with no problems. On 9 December 2023 I updated ChromeOS and now all New Tab Redirect does is give a blank white page instead of the "page of links" local HTML file that I have always had listed in the box for "Redirect URL".
- (2023-12-01) Sarah Race (Emmett): I use this extension multiple times a day! It works amazing alongside TeuxDeux. Love it.

- (2023-11-17) Asher Bourgot: It would probably be awesome if it worked, it probably worked for most people but still a cool concept just need a bit refining instead of going to a white screen for some, but hey it was probably really hard so claps to you!
- (2023-11-14) Michael Agranov: It still does not work at all with a local file. A blank page is displayed, no error code or nothing!
- (2023-11-07) John Knox: They fixed the extension back in 2014 but it now has a new issue. It no longer redirects to your chosen start page when you click to open a new tab. Perhaps this is due to Chrome updates or something and they have not updated the extension but it is now as of November 2023 effectively useless again and does not work.

- (2023-11-07) GBRTANK WARBOT: Use this for quick access to the links from local file on PC. Thanks that you added the feature to support local file, since new chrome new rules about local files.

- (2023-11-06) Pablo Rioss: Thanks for fixing the file permission issue which came along with Chrome v118. I am very happy to have my new tabs from a local file working again! Great extension / great author!

- (2023-11-04) Fred Leffingwell: I used the new tab redirect for years, but it recently changed so that it is now almost useless. I used it to redirect to a file on my computer, and though it seems to say it is possible, I can find no way to type in the file location and only get a blank stare from the list that contains a huge number of links I don't use and have never used.

- (2023-10-26) MurderChickenXL: There are a few options I don't understand. It would be nice to have tool tips when you mouse over an option. Since Edge removed the ability to edit our new tab pages, this was a very nice find!

- (2023-10-25) Ryan Yamasaki: I've used this extension for years and appreciate the continued support and development. Like a lot of others here, a recent update, either the extension or Chrome (probably Chrome) made it stop working. It would just open a new tab named "New Tab Redirect" but not actually redirect. To fix this, go to Extensions > Manage Extensions > New Tab Redirect (Details), and near the bottom there is a slider for "Allow access to file URLs". Enable that and if your redirect was to a local webpage (not www) then it'll work again.

- (2023-10-25) Alan Shmahlen: I have been using this extension for years to display my custom tab/starter page in Chrome. A lot of work has been put into that page, and I use it every day for my job. Since the 118 Chrome update, it no longer works. I've had to set my custom page as my homepage and I now need to open a tab and click the home icon. 2 clicks vs 1 doesn't seem that bad, but it adds up day after day. Enabling all of the new permissions has not resolved the issue, at least not for me. It still does not open my local file in new tabs.
