🔒 Data Privacy Breakdown
As part of the set-up and usage of Connect, we collect three types of data: Personally Identifiable Information (PII) by way of email and name when you create an account via signing up with Google; Location data by way of IP address again when you create an account via signing up with Google; Web history by way of collecting URLs in order to provide enriched company data based on those URLs (note: we don’t associate Web history with you as a user). We also require access to your personal communications only and we enrich email addresses within Gmail.

- (2024-08-08) Mike Paul: ClearBit started out pretty cool but like all technology companies, the truth slowly reveals itself. In this latest incarnation, the chrome extension asked for a permissions update: it can read data on all websites you visit. So, rather than just be sitting in Gmail and ingesting all your contacts so you can get access to theirs (give-to-get model) you now submit to sharing your browsing history with them. EVERY WEBSITE YOU VISIT. The tool has a blacklist for sites that it shouldn't show up on, but while you can prevent the thing from showing up on a web page as a little button in the top-right of the page, what prevents ClearBit from knowing each and every website you've visited? What a profile they can build on you. Disgusting. UPDATED to add that the permissions continue to be a problem; it only works when you enable to On All Sites. If you choose to enable "On Click" instead, you get hit with sign-in problems and it becomes unusable. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but it's been broken this way for months now. It's 8/8/24.
